Draw the graph of the derivative function f ′ (x) on the same diagram.

5. Let f (x) = x2 + 3x + 4.
(a) Find the equation of the tangent line to the graph of f (x) at x = −3.
(b) i. Let a ∈ R. Find the equation of the tangent line to the graph of f (x) at x = a and express
your answer in terms of a.
ii. Hence, find the equation(s) of the tangent line(s) to the graph of f (x) passing through
(3, 18).

6. (Optional) To prevent the disaster in the previous homework, your good friend Peter seeks your
help to proofread his work before the submission. Determine whether Peter is correct in each of
the following questions.
Is f differentiable at x = 0? Why?
Peter’s answer:
Yes. When x ≥ 0, we have f (x) = ex , and so f ′ (x) = ex . Then, f is differentiable at x = 0
and f ′ (0) = 1.
Peter’s answer:
No. Since the function y = |x| is not differentiable at x = 0, f (x) = x|x| is not differentiable
at x = 0.
