Project (20 marks)


It is required to design and simulate LNA and mixer of a receiver chain that consists of
LNA, mixer, filter, VGA and ADC. Each group will be assigned one of the standards shown
below.

Assumptions:
 The filter has a maximum IIP3 of 30 dBm, and NF higher than 20 dB and gain of -3
dB. Its loading at the mixer output is 1pF.
 The NF of VGA is higher than 25 dB and its IIP3 is lower than 25 dBm.
 The VGA should deliver -30 dBm to the ADC at the minimum input power and -10
dBm for the maximum input power.

The following is required:


 State the frequency band of your assigned standard. (1 mark)
 Calculate the required Gain range to deliver the required power to the ADC. ( 1 mark)
 Define the required spec (NF, IIP3 and Gain) for the LNA and the mixer and VGA gain to
achieve the required specs (LNA gain could be variable). Verify using lineup analysis equations
that the specs are verified at the maximum and minimum input power. (3 marks)
 Calculate the output SNR versus the input power input power (1 mark)
 A screenshot of your LNA design clearly indicating the operating point, sizing and current. (1
mark)
 Plot the simulated S11 in dB across the band of your assigned standard, S11 below -10 dB
should be achieved. ( 1 mark)
 A screenshot of your mixer design clearly indicating the operating point, sizing and current,
state the required LO swing for proper operation. (1 mark)
 Plot the simulated conversion gain after the LNA & mixer versus the RF frequency across the
band. (2 marks)
 Plot the simulated NF after the LNA & mixer versus frequency ( 2 marks)
 Plot the simulated IP1dB after the LNA & mixer versus the RF frequency across the band ( 2
marks)
 Plot the simulated IIP3 after the LNA & mixer versus the RF frequency across the band ( 2
marks)
 At the maximum input power, plot the mixer output voltage, and state the mixing spurs
components (2 marks)
 Create a table that summarizes the required specs versus the achieved one for the LNA and
the mixer. (1 mark)

Instructions
 The assignment should be done with a team of four.
 Zero tolerance to cheating. Cheating cases can get zero marks for both teams.
 You can normally discuss concepts with your colleagues
 Due date is 19/5/2023.
 The assignment should be sent to the following mail [email protected] as a pdf
file, the subject of the mail MUST be Project_Rx_ECE414_Spring2023, ignoring this may result in
your assignment being lost.
 The first page should be a cover page clearing indicating your name in Arabic and English and
your code.
 Penalty of 0.5 mark per day will be applied for late reports.
