OUTPUT

The visual, auditory, or tactile perceptions provided by the

computer after processing the provided information.
Examples include:
• text, images, sound, or video displayed on a monitor or
through speaker
• as well as text or Braille from printers or embossers.
PRINTER
• A printer is a device that accepts text and graphic output
from a computer and transfers the information to paper,
usually to standard-size, 8.5" by 11" sheets of paper.
Printers vary in size, speed, sophistication and cost
• Late medieval German
inventor Johannes
Gutenberg created the first
printing press based on
previously known mechanical
presses and a process for
mass-producing metal type.
CATEGORIES:

§ There are 2 main categories

§ Impact Printers
§ Non Impact Printers
Difference
Impact Printers

§ The impact printer creates immediate contact between

the ink ribbons and paper.
§ They can be noisy yet are very popular.
§ Impact printers have mechanical components that allow
printing
§ Examples include: Daisy-wheel printers, line printers,
and Dot-matrix printers.
Non Impact Printers

§ Non-impact printers create pictures, characters, and

figures without any uninterrupted contact between the
printing device and the paper.
§ Laser printers, Inkjet printers and Thermal printers are
some examples of Non-Impact printers.
Impact Printers

The examples of impact printers are :

1- Dot matrix printer
2- Daisy Wheel printer
3- Line printer
Dot Matrix Printers

§ A dot matrix printers is an impact character printer.

§ It makes a hardcopy by printing one character at a time.
§ Its printing speed is from 200 to 1000 or more
characters per minute.
WORKING

§ Dot matrix printer contains a print-head with a matrix of

small pins arranged in rows and columns.
§ Dot matrix printer produces output on paper by striking
pins against an ink ribbon.
§ Usually, a dot matrix printer uses 100 to 300 dots per
inch (DPI) to print output on the paper.
§ Print-heads are avialable with 9, 18 or 24 pins. The dot
matrix printer with 24-pins provides best quality printout.
Overview.
Characteristics

§ Dot matrix printers are used with personal computer.

§ They are less expensive.
§ The printout quality of these printers is not bad.
§ They also produce more noise during printing.
Daisy Wheel Printer

• Daisy wheel printer is also an impact character printer.

• It is similar to typewriter.
• It has a print wheel with a series of petals.
• This wheel is known as daisy wheel.
• Each petal of dasiy wheel contains a character at its
end.
Working
§ A motor rotates the wheel.
§ When the desired character reaches at the print position
on the paper, a hammer strikes a petal against the
ribbon.
§ In this way, a character is printed
on the paper.
§ This printer is slower than dot-matrix printer.
§ However, its print quality is better than dot matrix printer
Line Printer
• Line printer is an impact printer. it is very fast printer.
• It prints a complete line of characters at a time.
• The printing speed of line printer is measured in lines
per minute (lpm).
• It is upto 3000 lines per minute.
• Line printers are normally used with mainframe and
mini computer
TYPES

Two types of line printers are ;

1- Chain Printer
2- Band Printer
Non-impact Printers
TYPES

There are several types of non-impact printers which

include
• Inkjet
• Laser
• Thermal
• Dye-sublimation
Laser Printer

• Laser printers are a type of non-impact printer that

use laser LEDS to create an image.

• Laser printers operate by creating an electrostatic

image on a cylindrical-shaped roller known as the
drum.
Working

• Once the electrostatic image is formed, the drum is

coated with a fine powder known as toner.
• The toner particles are attracted to the charged areas
on the drum, adhering to the surface in the shape of
the desired image or text.
• Following this step, a sheet of paper is pressed against
the drum.
• The toner particles are then transferred from the drum
onto the paper.
Fixation

• To ensure the toner stays in place and is firmly

fixed onto the paper, a heat source is utilised.
• The heat melts the toner particles, fusing them to
the paper’s surface and creating a clear, high-
quality printed image or piece of text.
Inkjet Printer

§ Inkjet printers are a type of non-impact printer that uses

liquid ink to create prints.
§ Inkjet printing functions by spraying fine droplets of liquid
ink onto paper through minuscule nozzles.
§ There are several key mechanical components in
an ink jet printer that work together to create the
final print
§ These parts include ink cartridges, print heads,
paper feed mechanisms, and control panels.
Working

§ Ink cartridges are essential to an inkjet printer as they

hold and supply the liquid ink required for printing.
§ The printhead consists of a series of tiny nozzles that
spray the ink onto the paper with precision.
§ The print head moves across the paper horizontally,
releasing ink droplets in a controlled pattern to form the
desired image or text.
All in One Printer
• It is really popular in houses and offices.
• It has Scanner, Copier, Fax and email all together.
• It has made easy for us to use and interact with Printers.
• It has saved our time
• It is available in resonable prices.
There are some other types like
§ Plotters
§ Flat bed Plotter
§ Drum Plotters
