B. Performance Standards The learner is able to formulate and solve practical problems involving probability of simple
events.
C. Learning Competencies At the end of the lesson, each learner should be able to:
1. Interpret the uses of complement rule.
2. Solve for the probability of an event using the complement rule.

Denote “all events that are not A” as Aᶜ. Since
either A or not A must happen, P(A) + P(Aᶜ) = 1.
Hence, we derive the following formula.

P(Event happens) = 1 - P(Event doesn't happen)

P(A) = 1 - P(Aᶜ)
P(Aᶜ) = 1 – P(A)

When throwing a fair die, what is the
probability of getting a number that is not 6?
