Use: We use the passive voice when the doer of the action is unknown or unimportant.

Example: Form:
Mary makes a cake. (active voice) Subject + verb + object.

Object (A.V) + be (A.tense) + main v (PP) + by + subject (A.V)


A cake is made by Mary. (passive voice)

Forming the passive


Tenses Active voice Passive voice (be + verb – past participle)
Present simple Mary makes a cake. A cake is made by Mary.
Present continuous Mary is making a cake. A cake is being made by Mary.
Past simple Mary made a cake. A cake was made by Mary.
Past continuous Mary was making a cake. A cake was being made by Mary.
Present perfect simple Mary has made a cake. A cake has been made by Mary.
Present perfect continuous Mary has been making a cake. A cake has been being made by Mary.
Past perfect simple Mary had made a cake. A cake had been made by Mary.
Past perfect continuous Mary had been making a cake. A cake had been being made by Mary.
Will Mary will make a cake. A cake will be made by Mary.
Going to Mary is going to make a cake. A cake is going to be made by Mary.
Can,should,would,may Mary can make a cake. A cake can be made by Mary.
