Limits and Continuity 1

The document discusses the concept of limits in calculus, including definitions of limits, techniques for finding limits such as direct substitution, factoring, and rationalization, and limits at infinity including horizontal and vertical asymptotes. Examples are provided to illustrate various types of limits and finding limits of rational functions.

Limit
The limit of a function is a fundamental concept in calculus, concerning the
behavior of that function near a particular input

The limit is the value that a function approaches as the input

approaches some value. We write
lim 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝐿 𝑜𝑟 𝑓 𝑥 → 𝐿 , 𝑎𝑠 𝑥 → 𝑎
𝑥→𝑎

if the functional value 𝑓(𝑥) is close to the single real number 𝐿

whenever 𝑥 is close, but not equal, to 𝑎 (on either side of 𝑎).
Finding the limit

Solution
Definition of a limit
• If f(x) becomes arbitrarily close to a single number L as x
approaches c from either side, then
lim f(x) = L the limit of f(x) as x approaches c is L
𝑥→𝑐
• For a limit to exist, x must approach c from either side of c. If f(x)
approaches a different number from the left than it does, as x
approaches c from the right, then the limit does not exist
• The value of f(x) when x = c has no bearing on the limit as x
approaches c.
Techniques for finding limits
• Direct Substitution
• Factoring
• Rationalization
• Limits at Infinity

Limit at Infinity
The limit of f as x approaches infinity is given as follows:
lim f(x) =L
𝑥→∞
This means that f(x) will become arbitrarily close to L, the larger x becomes
Limit at Infinity and Horizontal Asymptote
A line y = L is a horizontal asymptote of the graph f(x) if
lim f(x) = L or lim f(x) = L
𝑥→−∞ 𝑥→∞
