A. Content Standards: The learners demonstrate an understanding the relationship between visible
constellations in the sky and earth’s position along its orbit.
B. Performance Standards: Learners should be able to discuss whether or not popular beliefs and practices
with regard to constellations and astrology have scientific bass.
C. Learning Competencies/ Objectives:
Competency: The Learners should be able to show which constellation may be observed at
different times of the year using models. S9ES-IIlj-35
Objective: 1. Describe the characteristics of star.
2. Illustrate the differences of the stars by its color, temperature, brightness, mass and its size
3. Reflect on how early people used constellation.

At the end of our lesson, you will


understand what is really a star and you’re
going to illustrate or you can compare them
based on their spectral classification,
luminosity, diameter and color index and
lastly, on how does the people use
constellation back then.

Now I want you to close your eye for 5


seconds and imagine that were in a field
trip and looking in the sky at night.

What can you observe at the sky?


- Stars

Okay very good! Its stars

Are the stars same in size? Are the stars


same in color? Are the stars equally bright?
- No sir!
Now, when we look at night sky, we see
thousands of stars. In the reality, there are
approximately 400 billion stars in our
galaxy, and there are about 170 billion
galaxies.
A person can see only about 3,000 stars on
the average. These stars differ in many
ways. We see stars of different sizes,
brightness, and color.

In this picture, which star is bigger-Sirius or - Based on that picture sir. Sirius is
Rigel? Can you really tell the size of the star way bigger than the Rigel.
by just looking at it?

In this figure, shows the size of the sun, the


closest star to earth, as compared to some
other stars that we see at the night. As we
can see, the sun is so small compared to
other nearby stars. Also, Sirius, which
appear bigger than Rigel, is actually very
small compared to Rigel. It appears larger
only because it is closer to us.

Before we go on that, let’s have first

characteristics of the star.

D. Explain (15 Minutes)

Class, there are five basic characteristics of


stars, which is interrelated to each other’s.

We have the color and temperature,


brightness, size and composition.

The first one is the color and temperature.


Let’s take a look at this picture, what can
you notice?

Very good. These pictures show the


relationship between color and
temperature. If you look up in the night
sky, you can see slight differences in the - Sir the color represents a different
colors of stars. Like hot objects on Earth, a level of temperature
star’s color reveals its surface temperature.
If you watch a toaster heat up, the wires
inside glow red hot. The wires inside a light
bulb are even hotter and glow white. Stars
are the same.

The coolest stars, with a surface


temperature of about 3,000oC appear
reddish, the medium stars, with surface
temperatures over 5,000oC appear yellow
while the hottest stars, with surface
temperatures over 20,000oC appear bluish-
white.
So, let’s take a look to this picture, what do
you notice?

star depends on both its size and its
temperature. How bright a star looks from
Earth depends on both its distance and

brightness of a star can be described in 2

Apparent brightness - is its brightness as state of being bright
seen from Earth.
Absolute brightness - is its brightness as
seen from Earth with same distance.

of star which is size.
So, anyone what is size?

Ok very well said. So, when you look at


stars in the sky, they all appear to be the
same size. Many stars are actually about
the size of the sun, which is a medium-sized - Ma’am size means the relative
star. However, some stars are much larger
aggregate amount or number
than the sun. Very large stars are called
giant stars or supergiant stars. Most stars
are much smaller than the Sun. Black and
white dwarf stars are about the size of - Sir the size is related to small or big
Earth. Neutron stars are even smaller, only
about 20 km in diameter.
