1 Overview
RiX series of CANopen Remote I/O (RIO) base units are installed in a CANopen
network system. The figure below shows typical network with a master and RiX
series of CANopen RIO base units connected in linear topology.

Nexgen 5000 series of CPUs of type CP 523x - - has one built in CAN (Controller
Area Network) port. This port can be configured as CANopen master using
programming software 'CoDeSys' and can exchange data with CANopen slave
devices.
Variety of I/O units is available in RiX series. I/O types include DC/AC digital I/Os
and various analog I/Os. Network can support up to 32 nodes (31 Slave + 1
Master). Each node can consist of base unit and maximum 3 expansion units.
A node can have maximum 64 digital I/O points. A base unit can have maximum
16 digital I/Os and 4 analog I/Os. An expansion unit can have maximum 16
digital I/Os.
The highlighting features of RiX series of CANopen RIO units are
1. Compact sized unit can be fitted in junction boxes and limited space. Unit
size matches to that of terminal block of twenty CST terminals.
2. Ergonomic but robust housing ensure stable operation of unit.
6. Optional I/O wiring arm/s enables 2-wire, 3-wire sensor connections and
2-wire actuator connections.
7. LED indications with clear nomenclature provided on the front side for unit,
I/O and network status and enables easy diagnosis and troubleshooting
locally on site.
8. User friendly 10-position rotary switches to set node ID on base units. No
settings required for expansion units.
9. Automatic baud rate detection after power ON reduces network settings.
10. Hot swappable nodes ensure replacement of faulty units without shutting
down the network.
11. CAN signals and network power supply is provided by single 5-pin screw
type connector. Inputs and outputs are powered by external power supply
other than network power supply.
12. I/O data exchange can be cyclic or on change of status or timer elapse to
keep bus load minimum. Bus load can be managed by providing inhibit
time.
13. Digital inputs provide sink/source type of operation in groups, configurable
filter time and pulse catch feature.
14. Short circuit protection for solid state digital outputs.
15. No power connections and user settings for expansion units. They are
powered from base units.

Base unit has on board micro controller with CAN interface. Base unit receives
24 VDC power supply through network connector. Internal DC to DC converter
generates 5 VDC required for micro controller operation as well as for expansion
unit/s. Thus provides non isolated power supply to base and expansion unit/s.
24 VDC supply is made available for expansion unit directly through 10-pin flat
cable.
After power ON, micro controller does self test, detects its node ID set on
10-position rotary switches and then sets itself for network baud rate detection.
Once baud rate detection is over, it sends boot up message on CAN bus and
gets configured by network master. After configuration, data transaction starts on
CAN bus.

The installation and wiring steps are explained in detail in subsequent chapters.

3 Node ID Setting
Two 10-position rotary switches are provided on the front side on base unit to set
node ID. The node ID setting is read by base unit at power ON only. If node ID
setting is modified after power ON, it is ignored.
CANopen master and slave devices in a network should have a unique node ID
ranging from 2 to 99. By default, CPU 523x as CANopen master has node ID 1.
If node ID on a base unit is set as 0 or 1, node ID is treated as 99 internally. Two
rotary switches (X10 and X1) configures node ID for the node. The figure below
shows the rotary switch setting with node ID 12.

Follow the steps below and refer figures 10 and 11 to mount the unit in the panel.
1. Hold the unit against the panel.
2. Place a center punch or similar tool through the holes of panel mount clamps
and mark a center point on the panel.
3. Remove base unit. Drill and tap two holes (diameter 4 mm) in the panel.
4. Place the unit matching the holes. Insert a screw (diameter 4 mm, length 10
mm) through each of the two mounting holes. Tighten the screws so that the
unit is firmly held on the panel.
It is necessary to un-tighten the screws completely to remove the unit from panel.

A too long striping length may cause a short circuit with the neighboring cable.
A too short length cause cable disconnection.
If standard cable is used, wire the stripped cable by twisting to prevent it from
becoming loose.
For single core cable and stranded cable with lug, follow the steps below to
make I/O connections.
1. Push the wired lug in the terminal connection point.
2. Spring clamp holds it firmly.

common points are provided as 'C0' to 'C3'. 16 input points ('I0' to 'I7' and 'I10' to
'I17') are provided.
For source types of field input devices, connect common point to the field power
supply ground and connect field input to input point within respective group.

and 8 output points ('Q0' to 'Q7') are provided. First four terminals ('NC') are not
used. AC or DC operated output devices can be connected.
Connect field output power supply (Line or +24VDC) to common point. Connect
one terminal of output device to output point on terminal block with other

7 Accessories : I/O Wiring Arm
7.1 Overview
I/O wiring arm is an optional accessory with ordering code 6920. It facilitates 2-
wire sensor/ actuator connections and 3-wire sensor connections on Base and
expansion unit. It can be attached to the base and expansion unit. The figure
below shows isometric view of I/O wiring arm with nomenclature.
Two types of spacers (2 nos. each) are provided separately to provide support
to I/O wiring arm when unit is mounted on DIN rail.

7.3 Mounting
Maximum two I/O wiring arms should be attached to a unit. The figure below

Reverse the steps discussed above to detach a I/O wiring arm from a unit.
1. Pull up I/O wiring arm slightly.
2. Disengage all the four hooks on the unit with the counterparts on the I/O
wiring arm gently.
3. Pull out I/O arm away from the unit.
If base unit is mounted on DIN rail, I/O wiring arm needs support to fill the gap
between mounting plane and wiring arm. Two types of rubber legs are provided
along with wiring arm as follows.
1. Rubber leg with length X mm
This should be fixed in first I/O wiring arm attached to a unit.
2. Rubber leg with length Y mm
This should be fixed in second I/O wiring arm attached to first I/O wiring arm.
Figure 22: DIN rail mounting with two I/O wiring extensions attached
To remove a unit with I/O wiring arm attached and mounted on DIN rail, it is
necessary to detach I/O wiring arm first. After detaching I/O wiring arm/s, unit
can be removed from DIN rail.
7.4 Wiring
I/O wiring arm is used to provide extra terminals to ground and common
connections. It is useful to interface 2-wire sensor/actuators and 3-wire sensors.
One I/O wiring arm provides 20 terminals. First 10 terminals are electrically
connected together internally. Remaining 10 terminals are electrically connected
together internally. The subsequent sections explain connections of sensors and
actuators to relevant base/expansion unit.
