Figure 3: Block diagram of base unit

Base unit has on board micro controller with CAN interface. Base unit receives
24 VDC power supply through network connector. Internal DC to DC converter
generates 5 VDC required for micro controller operation as well as for expansion
unit/s. Thus provides non isolated power supply to base and expansion unit/s.
24 VDC supply is made available for expansion unit directly through 10-pin flat
cable.
After power ON, micro controller does self test, detects its node ID set on
10-position rotary switches and then sets itself for network baud rate detection.
Once baud rate detection is over, it sends boot up message on CAN bus and
gets configured by network master. After configuration, data transaction starts on
CAN bus.

CANopen Base Unit Installation Manual 16

Base unit communicates with expansion unit via high speed serial interface on
master slave topology. It has built in expansion ID allocation mechanism
depending of sequence of expansion unit connection. If base unit finds any
mismatch in expansion configuration, it puts ON error indication and does not
configure expansion unit/s. If expansions connected are as per the configuration
programmed then base unit starts data exchange with expansion unit/s.
Digital I/O section is optically isolated from micro controller. Status indicating
LEDs are directly controlled by micro controller.
Base units are hot swappable. Base unit can be added and removed to and
from the network without disturbing the network.

3 Node ID Setting
Two 10-position rotary switches are provided on the front side on base unit to set
node ID. The node ID setting is read by base unit at power ON only. If node ID
setting is modified after power ON, it is ignored.
CANopen master and slave devices in a network should have a unique node ID
ranging from 2 to 99. By default, CPU 523x as CANopen master has node ID 1.
If node ID on a base unit is set as 0 or 1, node ID is treated as 99 internally. Two
rotary switches (X10 and X1) configures node ID for the node. The figure below
shows the rotary switch setting with node ID 12.

connected at any point of entire trunk line. The maximum length of trunk line and
maximum length of drop line depends upon baud rate set and type of network
cable used. It is necessary to install terminating resistors of 120 Ω/ 0.25 W at the
both ends of trunk line. Hence, terminating resistor should be connected
between CAN 'HI' and CAN 'LO' terminals on 5-pin network connector at extreme
end nodes as shown below.
