G) FACTUAL PASSAGE

pennacool.com
Read the passage below, then answer the questions that follow.

Viruses have long been in existence. They have been responsible for some of the
most devastating diseases in history including Covid-19 and Smallpox. The common cold is also
caused by a virus called the Influenza Virus. So, what is a virus? A virus is a microscopic agent
of infection which can be found in almost all life forms including: plants, animals, humans and
even bacteria. While that may be the case, viruses can only multiply inside the living cells of
organisms which are called host cells. This has left scientists undecided as to whether viruses are
alive or not.
Viruses are spread from one host to another through various means. Some may be
transmitted through touching of infected surfaces while others by inhaling infected air. Consider
the common cold or Influenza Virus. When someone has the cold, he or she would experience
symptoms such as runny nose, coughs, sneezes and fever to name a few. At the time when the
Influenza Virus is invading that person’s body, all of their bodily fluids, which include saliva and
snot, will contain viral particles. As a result, if that person sneezes or coughs into his hands, the
viral particles will be deposited onto his hands. Then, a simple touch of a doorknob or even a
handshake can pass the viral particles from that person to another. Imagine this process taking
place a few times for the day and then imagine the number of people that will have become
infected with the Influenza Virus at the end of the day.
The only way to prevent the effects of viruses is to contain their spread. This can
be done in various ways including, isolating yourself from others if you are sick. Another way to
prevent the spread of viruses is to wash your hands thoroughly before and after touching any
surfaces with which others may come into contact. Do not touch your face or put your hands into
your mouth. If you have to sneeze, sneeze into a tissue then immediately dispose of it in a bin. If
you do not have tissues, sneeze into the crook of your elbow. If these simple precautionary
measures are taken, the spread of viruses may become minimal.

Read the poem below, then answer the questions that follow.

Deep was my anger, inside of me Just as I thought I had let it all out
That caused a loud rumbling in my tummy, My anger decided to have another bout.
I looked around to see, An angry bear I was
All of nature’s creatures flee. Growling and gurgling like a bear does.
From my terrible temper they hid Tears flowed even faster
Afraid that I would blow my lid. Over my chest, in plains and pastures.

Unable to quell my rage Days passed by, my nerves frayed

All the earth became my stage, The damages caused, in my mind replayed.
As I let out all my tears My once fiery tears now dried upon my face
Fiery red with yellow flares. In every crack and tiny space.
Burning my face as they flowed A volcano they call me,
Upon my cheeks, they never slowed. My friends, big and small, shun me quietly
Afraid that I will once more become fiery.

J) FACTUAL PASSAGE
Read the passage below, then answer the questions that follow.
The simplest definition of the term energy is: “Energy is the ability to do work”. It
can also be called the power that is used to sustain a physical action. It is used to make machines
work and move. Energy is all around us and can take various forms such as: electricity, gas,
heat, light and even nuclear. It takes energy to cook food, make a car drive and even make an
airplane fly.
Energy can be classified as: renewable and non-renewable. A renewable energy
source is one that can be renewed or replenished. It is relatively easy to make more renewable
energy because all the resources are readily available to make more. An example of renewable
energy is energy from the sun or solar energy. While it has been said by some scientists that the
sun will eventually burn out, that is not likely to happen for millions of years to come. As a
result, the sun is always there and its heat energy can be harnessed through the use of solar
panels. Solar energy is considered clean energy because there are no harmful by-products when
using it. Wind energy and hydropower are also renewable sources of energy.
Non-renewable energy uses resources that cannot be readily recreated or
replenished. Fossil fuels such as petroleum, coals and natural gas are examples of non-renewable
resources. For many years, the world had been using non-renewable energy in just about
everything. Such energy has been long used in cars and other vehicles, electrical power plants
and even in the manufacture of materials like plastics, medicines and synthetic fabrics. The type
of energy provided by non-renewable resources are often called unclean because they give rise
to by-products that cause harm to the environment.

Read the poem below, then answer the questions that follow.
Oftentimes, I sit and wish, Every day, my imagination runs wild,
That I was born a fish. When I think of not being a child.
I would swim deep in the ocean blue, Being told, “Do this!” and “Do that!”,
Best of all, I’d have no chores to do. Then, “Don’t do this!” and “Don’t do that!”
But wait, what if I got hooked? The confusion they cause, going to and fro,
Would I also get cooked? I even sometimes think that my name is “NO!”
In that case, I changed my mind, When did life become so wonky?
I think I like being a human just fine. When just the other day I was a carefree baby.

Some days I agree, Wendy Lutchmansingh

I’d like to be a keskidee.
I would fly high in the blue sky
And see the world from a bird’s eye.
I would visit the Northern Range,
Explore new places as the days change.
Perch on a mango tree in bloom,
My sweet song I would croon.
But best of all, I won’t have to clean my room.

J) FACTUAL PASSAGE
Read the passage below, then answer the questions that follow.
Most natural disasters, like earthquakes or volcanoes, usually affect just the area of
the earth in which they occur. It is difficult to think that there may be disasters that affect the
entire earth at the same point in time. However, there is one global threat that is making its
rounds and impacting every fraction of the earth. It is proving to be a bigger threat than anything
that humans have ever faced before. That threat is, Global Warming.
Global warming is a gradual increase in the temperature of the earth. Influenced by
many human activities, the earth is getting warmer and warmer with each passing year. While we
may not feel an obvious increase in temperature, it is happening and the effects can be seen in
various parts of the world especially in the polar regions. Scientists have even said that once the
earth begins heating up, it would be virtually impossible to stop the process and that could mean
big trouble.
Global warming is triggered by an occurrence called the “Greenhouse Effect”. A
greenhouse is a house, usually made of glass or plastic, which is used to grow crops. The
greenhouse traps heat inside and stays hotter than the atmosphere outside of it. Now, think of the
earth as a giant greenhouse that is trapping a layer of heat all around it. This layer of heat is called
the natural greenhouse effect and is beneficial because it keeps the earth from becoming a frozen
ball.
However, there is now a new phenomenon called the enhanced greenhouse effect
which is causing the earth to heat up more than it should. This enhanced greenhouse effect is
caused by the excessive emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from the burning of
fossil fuels like gasoline in cars and coals in the electrical power plant. The carbon dioxide
produced rises into the atmosphere and makes the layer of gases around the earth a bit thicker so
that more of the sun’s heat gets trapped inside the earth’s atmosphere and the planet gets warmer.

I saw your wonderful smile today, (1) Many before, have tried until spent, (11)
It never fails to take my breath away, To capture your majestic descent.

The evening sky painted by you. That your beauty is best seen by my eyes.

After your day is done, (6) Your golden splendour, though short (16)
You sink beneath the horizon, Is a sure signal to abort,
As if you were swallowed by the ocean. All the troubles that came today.
With only minutes to spare, Then, on my pillow my head I’ll lay,
I relish your warm kiss and cheer. Til the morn when you come out to play,
And help me through another day.

J) FACTUAL PASSAGE
Read the passage below, then answer the questions that follow.
ICT refers to Information and Communication Technology. ICT combines
information technology hardware, such as computers, cell-phones and tablets, with
telecommunications networks or software, also known as the internet, to provide various
applications. Some of these applications include conveying, manipulating and storage of data
by electronic means. ICT has now taken the world by storm in light of the current Covid-19
pandemic. It is being widely used in all aspects of daily life including school, offices, banking,
transport and even home appliances. It is a modern convenience that has allowed the world to
continue functioning despite the adversity that is Covid-19.
ICT has been used for quite some time to produce information that would have
been considered to be traditionally paper-based in the past. Such bits of information as
receipts, invoices, sales and wage slips are now being done using ICT systems which make the
process less tiring and more convenient. Many schools and companies are now using ICT’s to
carry on with daily activities. Within the last two years, the Zoom Meeting App, as well as the
various Google Apps, have become a professional’s best friends because of their versatility in
carrying out various functions.
While ICT has helped the world to keep moving, there are many aspects that may
be deemed disadvantages. These disadvantages include: addiction to the internet, cyber-
bullying and loss of imagination and creativity in children. The use of ICT also carries a huge
cost factor and there is a possibility of data being lost permanently or being shared
indiscriminately. It is also associated with health hazards such as eye strain and back pain.
Last but not least, children are subjected to all kinds of predators on the internet if they are not
carefully supervised by adults while surfing the web.

Your love was the gentle rain, (1) You spent your life looking after us all,

Guided us through life’s opportunities, Even if we didn’t know til the end.
And made us who we were meant to be. (10) Losing you was a great loss for the world,

J) FACTUAL PASSAGE
Read the passage below, then answer the questions that follow.
Mass media is any form of communication whether written, spoken or broadcast.
It is called “mass” media because it is intended to reach a large audience. Mass media reaches
its audience via television, radio, advertising, movies, the internet, newspapers and magazines.
Mass media has become a very dominant force in our modern society and within recent years,
social media has taken the world by storm. Social media offers interaction among people in a
virtual setting. Some of the most popular social media platforms include: WhatsApp, Zoom,
Facebook and Twitter.
Mass media and social media are very useful when it comes to consumer
protection. This is so because consumers often acquire information about products and
services via advertisements on both mass and social media platforms. There are even forums
on mass and social media that offer live chats and consultancy for consumers who might be
interested in purchasing a product but lack information about it. On these forums, there are
also reviews of the products by people who would have already purchased them. To say that
these forums are just helpful is an understatement. They have actually become a necessity,
especially in modern times. They provide convenience at the fingertips of consumers.
While mass media is of great benefit to consumers, it can also cause problems for
them. One such problem is information overload meaning that there might be too many
reviews and recommendations about products or services to allow for a reasonable choice by
consumers. The quality of content available may not always be reliable and there is a huge
possibility of scammers trying to trick consumers. While there are two sides of the coin, the
final decision is in the hands of consumers.

Read the poem below, then answer the questions that follow.

The time is here once again, As the earth shudders at his power and might,
Time to be wary of the mighty Hurricane. Hurricane wreaks havoc in the dead of night.
One of nature’s deadliest forces, A gang of pirates plundering and stealing,
Gaining strength from water courses. Hurricane and his friends send us reeling.
To our knees, he can make us fall, The world takes cover and hopes for the best,
To pray for mercy at his beck and call. Waiting for Hurricane to run out of zest.

Winds that whip trees fro and to, When mighty Hurricane has had his fill,
Plucking light poles just out of the blue. He laughs proudly at his destructive will.
Raindrops like hammers beating down, Vanishing, with the earth shattered to pieces,
On cowering lives upon the ground. Beware! Look out for his nephews and nieces.
Lightning blasts through the eye of the storm, They intend to follow uncle Hurricane,
Followed by his brother in thunderous form. And bring forth more sorrow and pain.
