Chapter: Climate

1.What are the controls affecting the climate of India?

Ans: There are six major controls of the climate of any place.
They are:

 Latitude
 Altitude
 Pressure and wind system
 Distance from the sea (continentality)
 Ocean currents
 Relief features

2. Why does India have a monsoon type of climate?

Ans:
 The monsoon type of climate is characterised by a distinct seasonal pattern. The
weather conditions greatly change from one season to the other.
 These changes are particularly noticeable in the interior parts of the country.
 The coastal areas do not experience much variation in temperature though there is
variation in rainfall patterns.
 Four main seasons can be identified in India – the cold-weather season, the hot weather
season, the advancing monsoon, and the retreating monsoon with some regional
variations.

3. Define ‘Monsoon’. What do you mean by ‘breaks’ in monsoon?

Ans: The seasonal reversal in wind direction during a yeat is called the monsoon. Monsoon
tends to have ‘breaks’ in rainfall; which means that there are wet and dry spells in
between. The monsoon rains take place only for a few days at a time and then come to
the rainless intervals.

4. Monsoon is considered a unifying bond. Explain.

Ans: Despite great moderating influences on the climate of India, there are great variations in
the temperature conditions. Nevertheless, the unifying influence of the monsoon on the
Indian subcontinent is quite perceptible. The seasonal alteration of the wind systems and
the associated weather conditions provide a rhythmic cycle of seasons.

5. Which winds account for the rainfall in India?

Ans: South west Monsoon winds.

6. Tamil Nadu coast receives winter rainfall. Give reason.

Ans: The Tami Nadu coast receives winter rainfall because of movement of low-pressure
conditions to the Bay of Bengal.
7. What are ‘Mango showers’?
Ans: Towards the close of the summer season, pre-monsoon showers are common specially in
Kerala and Karnataka. It helps in the early ripening of mangoes and this is referred to as the
Mango-showers.

8.Define the term ‘loo’.

Ans: The strong, gusty, hot and dry winds blowing during the day over the north and northwestern
India are known as loo.

9.Why does the Peninsular region not have a well-defined cold season?
Ans: The Peninsular region not have a well-defined cold season as there is hardly any noticeable
seasonal change in temperature pattern during winters due to the moderating influence of the
season.
