Sweat Analysis (LEC)

The document discusses sweat examination and pilocarpine iontophoresis testing to diagnose cystic fibrosis. It describes how the tests work, including using pilocarpine to stimulate sweat glands and collecting and testing the sweat for sodium and chloride levels, with levels over 60mmol/L indicating cystic fibrosis.

SWEAT EXAMINATION

• Tested for the levels for Sodium & Chloride

• Used to diagnose cystic fibrosis
- a genetic disease that affects the mucous-secreting
glands of the body
**CFTR (Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance
regulatory gene)
-causes decreased epithelial cell chloride secretion
and excessive sodium reabsorption
•Risk Factor: Family history of cystic fibrosis
•Signs and Symptoms of Cystic fibrosis
1.Bulky offensive greasy stools (butter-like)
2.Noticeably salty sweat
3.Frequent respiratory infections and
chronic cough
4.Malnutrition
5.Male infertility (obstructive azoospermia)

PILOCARPINE IONTOPHORESIS
• At the test site, an electrode is placed over gauze containing
pilocarpine and electrolyte solution that will not interfere with
the sodium and chloride measurement.
• A second electrode (without pilocarpine) will be placed at
another site and a mild electrical current will draw the
pilocarpine into the skin where it stimulates the sweat glands.
PILOCARPINE
IONTOPHORESIS
• The test site is carefully cleaned and dried, then a piece of pre-
weighed filter paper is placed over the test site and covered
with parafilm to prevent evaporation.
• Specialized collection devices may also be used.
• Sweat is collected for 30 minutes.
• The filter paper is retrieved and weighed to determine the
weight of sweat collected
SWEAT EXAMINATION

• NV of Sweat Chloride: <50mmol/L

• Values >60mmol/L is indicative of cystic fibrosis
• Borderline: 50-60mmol/L

Tandaan mo lang dianne yung borderline 50-60 okayyyyyyyyyyy!!!
