LABOUR LAWS: BBR 3254

Week 1: Introduction to labor laws: Meaning of labour laws, historical background of labour laws,
sources and purposes of labour laws.

Week 2 The constitution of Kenya: Bill of rights, Provision of labour laws.

Week 3& 4 employment Act 2007: General principles, employment relationship, protection of wages,
rights and duties in employment, termination and dismissal, protection of children, insolvency of
employer, employment records, foreign contracts of services, dispute settlement procedure, terms and
conditions of service,

Week 5& 6 Labour Institutions Act: National Institutions Act: National labour board, industrial court,
labour administration and inspection, wages council and fixing of wages, employment agencies

Week 7& 8.Occupational safety and Health Act: general duties of occupies and employers,
administration of the act, registration of work places, health general provisions, safety general
proviiions, machinery safety, chemical safety, welfare general provisions, health safety and welfare
special provisions.

Week 9& 10:Labour relations Act 2007: freedom of association. establishment and registration of trade
unions and employers organizations, trade union dues, agency fees and employers organization fees,
recognition of trade unions and collective agreements, dispute resolution, adjudication of these
disputes, strikes and lockouts.

Week 11 :Work injury benefit Act 2007(WIBA): obligations of employers, right to compensation, claim
for compensation, manner of calculating earnings, appeals.

Week 12 Industrial training Act: Outline of industrial training Act, National industrial training Act,
Apprenticeship, industrial attachment, re-imbursement of training expenses.
