SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN

Title: Exploring Earth's Layers
Science 6

Objectives At the end of the 45-minute discussion, 85% of the students

will be able to do the following:

a. Identify and describe the layers of the Earth.

b. Explain the characteristics and composition of each layer.
c. Apply knowledge of the Earth's layers to real-world
contexts.

Learning Competency Students will be able to describe the layers of the Earth,
understand the unique properties and features of each layer
and they should be able to relate their understanding of the
Earth's layers to practical examples.
Students will be considered proficient when they can
Performance Standards accurately describe the layers of the Earth and explain their
characteristics and composition with clarity and detail and
explaining how the composition of the crust influences the
formation of different landforms

Materials/Resources: PowerPoint Presentation, Video presentation, visuals of the

Earth’s layer, Learner’s Material, blackboard, chalk
Preliminary Activities Greetings
Prayer
Tidying up the classroom
Attendance Checking
Class Conditioning
- Giving “word “of the Day, Health Advice, life values,
financial planning etc.
Reminders of the Classroom rules
Review of the past lesson
Review Questions: Rocks
1. What are the three main types of rocks?
2. Can you give examples of igneous rock, sedimentary rock
and metamorphic rock?
3. Why is it important to study rocks?

Lesson Procedure: Elicit:

The teacher will show a picture of the Earth.

And ask the following questions:

What do you know about the composition of the Earth?

The teacher will show another picture of the Earth and a slice
of cake

The teacher will ask the students about the similarities of the
two.

The teacher encourages the student to think critically by asking

the student the following:
Imagine you have a giant shovel that can dig deep into the
Earth. What do you think you would find as you dig deeper and
deeper?

The teacher then, introduces the topic.

The teacher then let the students read the lesson objectives.

Engage:

The teacher will play a short video clip depicting the Earth's
layers:

After playing the video the teacher will ask the following
questions to engage the students:

What do you notice about the different layers of the Earth?

Why do you think it's important for scientists to study the

Earth's layers?

Explore:

The teacher will divide the class into groups and distribute
illustrations depicting the layers of the Earth.

The teacher will instruct them to closely examine the visuals

and discuss among themselves the characteristics and
composition of each layer.
Group 1- Crust Group 2- Mantle

Group 3- Outer Core Group 4- Inner Core

Encourage every member of the group to participate and

record their observations and questions.

Explain:

The teacher will let the representative of each group explain in

the class their findings.

The teacher will scaffold the explanation and make corrections

on any misconceptions.

Encourage students to ask questions and participate in

discussions to clarify their understanding.

Elaborate:

GROUP ACTIVITY

The teacher will divide the class into four and conduct group
activity using Differentiated instructions to facilitate different
types of learners.

Each group will have their own rubrics

*See attachment for rubrics
Group 1 (For Visual Learners)

Create infographics that illustrate the characteristics and

compositions of each layer of the Earth.

Group 2: (For Auditory Learners)

Make a story or narrative about a hypothetical journey

through the Earth's layers.

Group 3: (For Kinesthetic Learner)

Make a role-play that simulate geological processes and

phenomena related to the Earth's layers.

Group 4: ( For Reading and writing learners)

Create annotated diagrams of the Earth's layers, labeling key

characteristics and compositions.

They can write descriptions or explanations next to each layer

to reinforce understanding.

Extend:

Case Study:
(Real-World Application)

The Teacher will give the following case study to apply the
learnings in a real-life situation for further enrichment.

The local community has decided to build a new elementary

school to accommodate the growing population. As part of the
construction process, the builders need to ensure that the
school's foundation is stable and resilient to withstand various
environmental factors, including earthquakes and soil
conditions.
Imagine you are part of a team of junior geologists tasked with
assessing the site for the new school and advising on the
foundation design.

Apply your knowledge of the Earth's layers to recommend

appropriate foundation designs and construction techniques
that will ensure the school's stability and safety in the long
term.

Evaluate:

The teacher will evaluate the students' understanding

through a quiz format.

Instructions: Choose the best answer for each question.

Assignment:
For their homework, the students will be tasked to identify
real-life examples or phenomena related to the Earth's layers,
such as volcanoes, earthquakes, or mountain formation and
make a journal about it.

They can research how these phenomena are influenced by

the structure and composition of the Earth's layers .
