MBA RESEARCH PROJECT

DR GARY TAN

SESSION OUTLINE

• Chapter 5
(a) Discussion – Linear Regression
(b) Conclusion – Multiple Linear Regression
• Chapter 6
(a) Practical Implications
(b) Theoretical Implications
(c) Researcher’s Reflection
DISCUSSION

• Connection back to previous research studies literature review

• Continuation from your Chapter 2 – Literature Review Summary
• Make the connection between your findings and previous research findings:
(a) Are there any similarities?
(b) Do your findings support the theory your are testing?
(c) Why are the findings are the same? Why not?

CONCLUSION
(WHAT ARE THE CRITICAL FINDINGS?)
• Looking back into the major research question (e.g., most important factor – multiple
linear regression) and explain some of the critical findings.
• This is a section where you will build the platform for Chapter 6.
• Moving forward, what are you focusing on (i.e., from the business/management strategies
perspectives and from the extension/expansion of the academic research perspective).
PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS
(MANAGEMENT/BUSINESS STRATEGIES)
• Recommend/create/design THREE (3) management/business strategies based on your
research findings.
• Prioritize the management/business strategies
• Focus on the current business environment when developing the strategic business plans
• Connect this section to the concepts you have learned from Strategic Management
course
THEORETICAL IMPLICATIONS
(RECOMMENDATION FOR FUTURE RESEARCH)
• Recommend/create/design THREE (3) future research agendas based on your research
findings.
• Look back at the post-study research limitations and recommend ways to fix them.
• Think about directions (i.e., expansion/extension) of current research study to further
advance the body of knowledge.
• Introducing new methodology to further evaluate the research objectives for this current
research study.
RESEARCHER’S REFLECTION

• Closing up this research study by sharing the lessons you have learned from this current
research study
• How do you plan to use the lessons learned from conducting this current research study
for your personal and professional development?
• What are your future plans to further enhance your personal and professional
development?
WHAT’S NEXT?
MOVING FORWARD TO THE MBA RESEARCH PROJECT

• Take a quick break after your Business Research Methods (BRM) class
• Continue to discuss with your lecturers/potential supervisors on ways to expand this
BRM assignment and final exam into the MBA Research Project
• Break down the MBA Research Project into smaller components so you can complete
them task by task.
SAMPLE MBA RESEARCH PROJECT TIMELINE
MBA RESEARCH PROJECT COMPONENTS

• Research Project Proposal Presentation (20%)

• Research Project Written Report (70%)
• Research Project Viva (10%)
RESEARCH PROJECT PROPOSAL PRESENTATION (20%)

• Refer to the template - X1. MBA Research Project Proposal Presentation PowerPoint
Deck
• This is a voice-recorded PowerPoint Presentation which you will submit one week
before the Research Project Proposal Presentation Question and Answer Session
• Recommend to use Microsoft PowerPoint voice recording function (no video please, the
file will be too big to be uploaded into LMS)
• The purpose of this component to help your further improve on your current research
study prior to data collection
POST RESEARCH STUDY PROPOSAL PRESENTATION
(DATA COLLECTION)
• Collecting the data for the current research study
• Analyzing the data
• SPSS Workshop will be provided to help prepare you for your data analysis
RESEARCH PROJECT WRITTEN REPORT (70%)

• 20,000 words (+/- 10%) research report (Chapter 1 to Chapter 6)

• Refer to Final Year Project Guideline for the report format
• Harvard Referencing Style
• Submit early to check for plagiarism report (Turnitin)
RESEARCH PROJECT VIVA (10%)

• This is a live session for you to present your research findings (Chapter 4), discussion and
conclusion (Chapter 5), and recommendations (Chapter 6)
• You will have 15 – 20 minutes to present and this will follow with a 10 minutes Question
and Answer Session
- THE END -

• Your final work will be assessed by your supervisor and an internal moderator.
• The final marks will be presented at the School Board and later at the Exam Board
• The University Senate will endorse your marks for this course
• If Research Project is the last component for your program and you have passed the
research project as well other courses in the program, the Dean will submit your name
to the University Senate for graduation.
