Master of Science in Energy Technology is a two-year postgraduate degree programme offered at the Institute of Energy
and Environmental Technology (IEET), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). Candidates
undertaking the programme acquire competencies in various renewable energy technologies, as well as in modelling,
energy econometrics, policy and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA). The course is research and
coursework-based programme, with the first year focusing on theory and practical aspects while the second year is spent on
research leading to a thesis/dissertation. The programme is currently offered at the JKUAT main campus, Juja, in Kiambu
County, about 53 kilometres (approximately one hour’s drive) from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi.
We are pleased to announce that DAAD is offering full scholarships to students registered for the MSc (Energy technology)
programme. The scholarship is both for International (Africans and non-African residents) as well as Kenyan students, and
will be available to students commencing their studies in September 2024. The scholarship caters for tuition, university fees,
return flights (if not from Kenya), stipend (for accommodation and living expenses) as well as research expenses.
The scholarship is tied to the MSc (Energy Technology) course, thus interested applicants must first apply for admission to
the course. Admitted students can then apply online for the scholarship between Now and 23rd November, 2023.
Students intending to apply for DAAD scholarship should submit their applications for admission to MSc (Energy
Technology) course not later than 14th November 2023 to IEET. The application can be done online or manually.
2.0 Application Process
Application for the scholarship is a three-step process, which entails:
(i) Application for MSc (Energy Technology) course at IEET-JKUAT.
(ii) Assessment and admission of student subject to meeting eligibility requirements for the programme.
(iii) Online student application for In-Country/In-Region DAAD Scholarship using the DAAD application portal (The portal
will require proof of admission to MSc Energy Technology course).
➢ Both the MSc (Energy Technology) course and DAAD Scholarship are open to Kenyan as well as citizens of other African
countries.
➢ Women are particularly encouraged to apply.

3.0 Admission / Eligibility Requirements
The admission requirements are as under:
i. Secondary or high school equivalent certification to Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), and,
ii. Undergraduate degree. The Commission for University Education (CUE) provides additional explanations and
qualifications regarding the secondary/high school certification or its equivalent (check Section III of the link

The undergraduate degree required is:
• At least an Upper Division (Second Class Upper) Bachelor of Science (BSc) in agricultural, engineering and
applied physical/biological sciences from JKUAT or any other university/institution recognized by the JKUAT
Senate, or,
• Lower Division (Second Class Lower) Bachelor of Science (BSc) in the subjects listed above, with a minimum
working experience of two years in a related field /or experience in terms of publications in relevant field OR
• Any other equivalent qualifications recognized by the JKUAT Senate.
4.0 IEET-JKUAT Application Process
(i) For manual application, three copies of each of the following documents is required to be delivered to the Director,
IEET, either physically or through P.O. Box 62000-00200, Nairobi, Kenya.
(ii) For online application, the documents should be merged into a single pdf file not bigger than 6MB and named as
firstName_Surname_YearOfApplication.pdf, and emailed to

Documents required for MSc Energy Technology application are:
(i) Copy of ID/passport.
(ii) Certified copy of undergraduate degree certificate.
(iii) Copies of all the undergraduate transcripts.
(iv) Passport photographs (2 for manual application).
(v) Copy of the high school or secondary school KCSE certificate {for international students see equivalency listed

(vi) Letter of CUE recognition of the undergraduate and secondary/high school certificates (this applies to
international students). – You can still send in application without this letter, as you follow up on the CUE
recognition
(vii) Proof of payment of application fee of KES 1,500 (USD 15)
(viii) Duly filled application form.

Upon successful admission to the programme, students will be required to avail original documentation on the day of
reporting
6.0 DAAD Scholarship Application Process
(i) For students intending to apply for the DAAD scholarship, the IEET-JKUAT application (whether online or manual)
should be received by mid-November of the preceding year. Upon receiving admission letter, the student will apply for
the DAAD scholarship online. For students wishing to be considered for 2023 DAAD Scholarship, the deadline for
DAAD scholarship application will be the 8th December 2022. Thus, the application for admission at IEET-JKUAT for
these students should be before 14th-November 2023 (Preferably end of October 2023).
(ii) Upon admission and receipt of the student registration letter, the student will apply online for the DAAD scholarship,
before the DAAD deadline of 23rd November, 2023.
(iii) The application documentation (excluding the IEET-JKUAT application form) that is submitted to IEET-JKUAT will also
form part of the online DAAD application attachments. In addition, the DAAD application will require some reference
letters, a motivation letter, as well as a filled out DAAD application form.

(v) Upon admission (evidenced by admission letter), the student will, during the first week of the semester, self-report in
the online ERP system, and subsequently pay the requisite school fees for that semester by the deadline indicated in
the portal.
7.0 Questions / Clarifications
(i) Do note that regardless of whether one is applying for a DAAD scholarship or not, the applicant must first apply
to be admitted as M.Sc. (Energy Technology) student. Upon assessment and admission (evidenced by an
admission letter and student registration number), the student will in the 1st week of the Semester self-report
in the online ERP system. This will generate the units/modules being undertaken that semester. For scholarship
holders, the scholarship will pay this amount. The self-funded students, will pay the same as indicated in the
invoice generated by the ERP system.
