WEEK 5

4-5 LESSON

Need to Know: I’m Blessed When I Show Mercy

Bible Story: The Forgiving King (Matthew 18:21-35)

1. WELCOME kids back to our series, “Crowned,” and TELL them your name. Then SAY: I’m so glad
you’re here! Because God is King over everything and we are His children, we are all royalty! I’m
going to pass this die around our group, and when it comes to you, tell the group your name and
roll the die. Then I will ask you a question based on which number the die lands on.
2. PASS the die around the group, allowing kids to introduce themselves and roll the die. Then READ the
corresponding question from the Question Sheet.
3. Once everyone has shared, SAY: Showing mercy to others means that we forgive them when they
do something wrong, and we are willing to let it go. When we show mercy, Jesus promises to
bless us by showing us mercy and forgiving us! That’s what we need to know today! Everyone,
say this after me:
I’m Blessed When I Show Mercy

1. SAY: In the Bible, there’s a story about a king who showed mercy. Let’s see what happened.
2. READ the Bible Story Cards aloud to the group.
3. After the story, ASK:
• What kind of attitude did the king have toward the servant when he first called him in?
(Merciful, kind, forgiving) Yes! The king showed mercy by forgiving the man who had done
wrong, and that’s exactly what Jesus did for us!
• Should you show mercy only when you feel like someone deserves it? (No) That’s right! We
are blessed when we show mercy and forgive others, even if they don’t say they’re sorry.
4. SAY: Jesus forgave us, even before we knew we did anything wrong! That’s what showing mercy
is. We are blessed when we show mercy, like Jesus did for us!

Option 1: Catch the Tudes

1. SAY: To practice what we’ve learned today, we’re going to play “Catch the Tudes”!
2. DIVIDE the group into two teams. CHOOSE one child from each team to be the team captain. THINK of
a number between one and ten without telling the group. HAVE each captain say a number aloud. The
captain that was closest to your number will go first.
3. PLACE the Forest Cards tree side up in the center of the group.
4. EXPLAIN the game by saying:
• As Royalty, Jesus wants us to have attitudes that show we depend on God. In large group,
we’ll hear about an evil queen and her enchanted forest. In her forest are some little
creatures called “Tudes.” These tudes will do whatever it takes to mess with someone’s
attitude! So in this game, the team that catches the most of them will win.
• Each team will take turns using the sticky hand to catch one Card. When you catch a Card,
I’ll read it. If your Card has a Tude on the back, then you get to keep it. But if it has an X,
you have to put it back in the forest.
• There are seven Tudes hiding in the forest and the team that catches the most wins the
game!
5. PLAY the game until all Tudes are caught. After the game, SANITIZE kids’ hands and GIVE each child a
piece of candy, rewarding the winning team first.
6. Afterwards, SAY: Showing mercy to others means we forgive them and are willing to let it go.
When we have an attitude that shows mercy, we will be blessed! Let’s say this together again:
I’m Blessed When I Show Mercy

Option 2: On Back
Option 2: Group Discussion
1. SHARE a personal story about a time when you showed mercy to someone or forgave someone. MAKE
SURE the story is appropriate for kids.
2. GENERATE group discussion by asking the following questions:
• Have you ever done something wrong and not gotten the punishment you deserved? How did
that make you feel?
• Why should we show mercy to other people?
• Are you still angry at someone for something they did to you a long time ago? How can you
show mercy to them this week?
3. SANITIZE kids’ hands and GIVE each child a piece of candy for participating in group discussion. Then
REVIEW the Need to Know together again: I’m Blessed When I Show Mercy

1. SAY: There is a verse in the Bible that reminds us of how we will be blessed when we remember
how much we need God. Let’s say it together:
“Great blessings
Belong to those who know
They are spiritually in need.
God’s Kingdom
Belongs to them.”
Matthew 5:3
2. PRACTICE saying the verse with the group two times, having them repeat each line after you.
3. PLAY a game to practice the verse.
• ALLOW each child to take a turn rolling the die. When the die lands on a number, the child who
rolled it will have that many seconds, times ten, to put the Memory Verse Cards in the correct
order. (Ex: If the die lands on four, the child will have forty seconds to put the Cards in the correct
order.)
• Once the child is ready to start, SAY, “Go,” and HAVE the rest of the group count down together.
4. CONTINUE playing as time allows.
5. TELL kids that they have the rest of the series to learn this verse, and if they do, they will win a prize!

ASK your group for any prayer requests. Then PRAY the following for your group:
• That they would be thankful for all of the things God has blessed them with
• That God would help them to show mercy and forgive others, just like Jesus did for us

KEEP kids engaged in Small Group until they are checked out by doing the following activities:
• PLAY “Doggy, Doggy, Where’s Your Bone?” with the die.
- HAVE everyone in the group close their eyes.
- GIVE the die to one child to hide (under leg, in hands, etc.)
- HAVE everyone open their eyes. SELECT one child to be the “Dog” who is looking for the die.
- ALLOW the child three guesses to try and figure out who has the die.
- CONTINUE playing, allowing different kids to hide the die and be the “Dog.”
• PLAY “Knights vs. Dragons”:
- DIVIDE kids into two teams—knights and dragons.
- HAVE teams sit in two lines, facing each other.
- When you say “Go,” each team member will play “Rock, Paper, Scissors” against the person
directly across from them.
- The winner of that round will continue in the game. The losing opponent will lie down on
his/her stomach.
- CONTINUE playing rounds until all members of one team are lying down.
