Tutorial 3

Part A

Solve the following related rates problem.

1) The area of a circle is increasing at the rate of 12 cm 2/s. Find the rate of increase of its radius
when its diameter is 14 cm.
2) A lawn mower needs to clear a circular area in such a way that the radius r is increasing at the
rate of 2 km/min. How fast the area is increasing when r = 5 km?
3) The radius of a sphere is increasing at the rate of 0.75 cm/s. When its radius is 8 cm, find the rate
of increase of its
a) Volume.
b) Surface area.
4) Air escapes from a leaked spherical balloon. If the volume of the balloon is decreasing at the rate
of 10 π cm3s-1, find the rate of decrease of the radius of the balloon when its diameter is 17 cm.
5) Each side of a cube is increasing at the rate of 2 cms -1. When the length of each side is 8 cm, find
the rate of increase of its
a) Volume.
b) Surface area.
6) A cube of ice is melting, losing 30 cm 3 of its volume per minute. When the side length of the
cube is 15 cm, how fast is the side length decreasing?
7) An open cylinder has a radius of 20 cm. Water is poured into the cylindrical at the rate of 40
cm3/s. Find the rate of increase of the height of the water.
8) A certain water tank is an inverted cone with height 12 feet and top diameter 8 feet. The water is
being pumped into the tank at the rate of 50 ft 3/min. How fast is the water level rising when the
water in the tank is 6 feet deep?

Part B

For the given functions below, answer the following questions.

i) What are the critical points of f?
ii) Find the absolute extrema on the interval of [ −4 ,3 ] .
iii) Find the intervals on which f is decreasing or increasing.
iv) Compute the local maximum and/or local minimum by using 1st derivative test.
v) Find the intervals of concavity and the inflection points.
vi) Find the local maximum and/or minimum by using 2nd derivative test.

a) f ( x )=5−4 x−x 2
b) f ( x )=5+12 x−x 3
c) f ( x )=x 3 +6 x 2 +9 x−2
d) f ( x )=x 4 −8 x 2 +16
Part C

Solve the following optimization problem.

1. A box has the shape of a cuboid. Its height is y m. it has a square base of side x cm, m. if the
volume of the box is 64 m 3, find the value of x and y such that the total surface area of the box is
minimum.
2. You are designing a rectangular poster contain 300 m 2 of printing with a 10 cm margin at the top
and bottom and a 5 cm margin at each side. What overall dimensions will minimize the amount
paper used?
3. A rectangular plot farmland will be bounded on one side by a river and on the other three sided
by a single-strand electric fence. With 800 m of wire at your disposal, what is the largest area you
can enclose? What are its dimensions?
4. A manufacturer of food-storage containers makes a cylindrical can with a volume of 500
milliliters. What dimensions (height and radius) will minimize the material needed to produce
each can, that is, minimize the surface area?
