YEAR 6 – MATHEMATICS

SUBJECT 1 :NUMBERS
PLACE VALUE: When we combine digits to make a number, the value of each digit in the
number changes when this digit is in different places in the number. This is called the place
value of a digit.
Examples: In the number 3978, the digit 8 has a place value of 8.
In the number 5384, the digit 8 has a place value of 8x10= 80.
In the number 4853, the digit 8 has a place value of 8x100= 800.

READING AND WRITING NUMBERS IN ENGLISH


*Look at the table given above.
*We must split the digits in the number onto groups of three digits-starting from the
right-hand side of the number.
*We then read each group separately. We always start reading from the left-hand side.
Each group of three digits is read in the same way.
*Do not forget to add the word “and” after the name of any hundreds and the names of
any tens.
Examples: Write the following numbers in words.
(a) 2894: Two-thousand and eight hundred and ninety-four.
(b) 35766: Thirty-five thousand and seven hundred and sixty-six.

(c) 834123: __________________________________________.

(d)167304915: ______________________________________.
Exercises: Write each of the following numbers in figures.
a) Three-hundred and ninety-six: 396

b) Seventy thousand, two hundred: _____________

c) Nine million, two thousand, and fifty-one: __________________

Even numbers can be divided by 2 and give no remainder.
Odd numbers can not be divided by 2 exactly, they leave a remainder.

ORDERING POSITIVE WHOLE NUMBERS

Ascending order: Ordering numbers from the smallest to the biggest number.
Descending order: Ordering numbers from the largest number to the smallest number.
