Blood Types
One of the most well-known examples of codominance in humans is blood type. Blood types
are determined by the presence of antigens in the blood. There are three different blood
type alleles, two are dominant and one is recessive.

Dominant Dominant Recessive

Just like all alleles, these come in pairs and therefore four different blood types. In Mendelian
genetics, when a dominant allele is paired with a recessive allele, the dominant trait is
expressed. With blood types, A and B are codominant, while the blood type O is recessive.
This means that there are four possible blood types, A, B, O and AB.

A IAIA or IAi

B IBIB or IBi

Olivia is homozygous for blood type B and Jim is blood type O. They want to know what
blood type their baby might be. We will draw a Punnett square starting with a key.

Key:
IA- Type A
IB- Type B
i - Type O

Next we will determine the parents’ genotypes. We know that Olivia has type B blood and is
homozygous, so her genotype will be ‘IBIB’. Jim is blood type O which is the recessive trait so
for him to have type O he must be homozygous for type O, therefore his genotype will be ‘ii’.

Now that we have the genotypes for the parents we can find out the possible genotypes for
the offspring. We will fill each box with the letters above and to the left of the box.

We can see that Olivia and Jim’s baby will have a 100% chance of being heterozygous for
blood type B.
1. Rachel has type A blood and Frank has type O blood. They have three children, Mathew
and Angie are their biological children, their youngest child Peter was adopted. Matthew
has type O blood, Angie has type A blood and Peter has type AB blood. Complete the
Punnett square for Rachel and Frank and answer the questions below. Hint: If you are
unsure of a parent’s genotype you can start with the offspring genotypes you know.

a. What is Rachel’s genotype?

b. What is Frank’s genotype?

c. How does Peter’s blood type support the claim that he is an adopted child of Rachel
and Frank?

2. One parent has type A blood and the other parent has type B blood. The baby has type
O blood. Demonstrate how it is possible for someone with type A blood and someone
with type B blood to have a child with type O blood?

3. Based on the information below, find out who is the second parent. Justify your answer.
Child- Type B
Parent 1- Type A
Parent X- Type O
Parent Y- Type AB
Parent Z- Type A
