Physics Problem-based Experiment

PROBLEM: How can we design a parachute model that maximizes air resistance and
provides a safe and slow descent for a payload?

I. Title: (Create your own catchy title based on your parachute model)
II. Introduction: (Briefly discuss and research free-falling objects, their influencing factors,
and the materials that have a significant impact on gravitational acceleration in 5-10
sentences.).

Free-falling objects are objects that fall with the acting force of gravity; they are either thrown up
into the air or dropped from an elevated space. The mass of an object doesn’t affect the rate of
acceleration, and will fall at the same rate as any other object. The reason why heavier objects
seem to fall faster, and one of the influencing factors in free fall, is air resistance. It is the
collision of air molecules with the surface of an object. As objects fall, their velocities accelerate
over time, and air molecules will act upon the falling object, with heavier objects receiving more
air resistance. Knowing this, we can affirm that light materials receive less air resistance and will
seem to fall slower. Using materials such as plastic, paper, and thin cloths is effective in making a
canopy of a parachute model work, since it receives less air resistance and will float in the air for
some time.

III. Objectives: (Enumerate at least 2-3 specific objectives/goal of your experiment)

Main goal: To make the best parachute with the different materials and design.

1. To learn about free fall affected by air resistance

2. To learn how to plan out and engineer a parachute model

IV. Experimentation:
Task: Create 2 parachute models using different materials/designs. Compare these
models to determine which material/design is best effective in making parachute.

A. Materials: (Must be brought onsite for experimentation. And consider

quantitative measurements on your materials)
•Plastic bag
•Paper
•Scissors
•Tape
•Yarn
•Cup

B. Procedures: (Detailed process in creating and testing your 2 parachute

models. Use recipe type format)

Cut the plastic/paper into a circle with 12 inches perimeter

Put holes on the edge
Tie the plastic/paper to the cup
Go to a high place and test it
C. Safety precaution: (Indicate some safety precautions needed in performing
the experiment)
• Wear gloves
• Be careful when cutting
• Use the right materials

DATA ANALYSIS

VI. Guide questions: (Answer the following questions briefly using 2-3 sentences)

1. Describe and compare the property/composition of the materials used and explain how it
aided in the efficacy of your parachute models?

2. If you were to recreate your parachute model, what changes would you make to your
model?

3. What additional features or mechanisms can be incorporated into the parachute design to
ensure stability during descent?

VII. Conclusion:
How did the parachute model compare to other existing designs or commercially
available parachutes in terms of air resistance, descent speed, and overall functionality?

In conclusion, the model has materials that are readily available in our homes, this is why it
doesn’t perform as well as real parachutes in terms of decreasing descent speed and overall
functionality. If better designed and equipped with better materials, this model can compete
with real parachutes in terms of performance.
VIII. Documentation: (Must be taken from the experimentation itself with the result-at least
2-3 pictures)

PEER AND TEACHER’S EVALUATION

Write the name of each member below. For each group member, indicate the degree to which you agree with the
statements on the left, using a scale of 1-4 (1 – strongly disagree; 2 – disagree; 3 – agree; 4 – strongly agree).
