INTRODUCTION

The Philippines is blessed with diverse flora and fauna, and is populated
by a multisectoral society with multicultural backgrounds. The Philippines’ geography,
history, and people contribute to the art production that is one of the finest in the world.
Learning the country’s art and its artists will broaden your understanding of who you are
and where you belong, as art is an instrument of identity. Art is not limited to the artistic
and creative because the need for art, be it the producer or the consumer of it, rooted in all
people; the need for beauty and expression is in you.

Many scholars debate on the identity of art produced by Filipinos. Are they 100% authentic
Philippine art? Many question the rootedness of the artworks produced by Filipino artists.
This speculation on the “Filipino-ness” of works by Filipino artists is caused by our
colonial history and migrant reality.

Philippine Art as Filipino

Many scholars debate on the identity of art produced by Filipinos. Are they 100%

other Asian countries has become part of our identity that is evident in our art: Spanish-inspired

architecture, American influenced poetry and music, and so on. The migrant reality of
globalization also shaped Philippine Art. Across the world, Filipinos have adopted to foreign
culture.

Philippine Art reflects our history; at the same time, our history reflects our art.

Lesson 2: Art in Contemporary Times

The J. Paul Getty Museum defines contemporary art as “art made and produced by artists
living today. Today’s artists work in and respond to a global environment that is culturally
diverse, technologically advancing, and multifaceted.” With this definition, you can picture the
kind of art created by today’s contemporary artists as art that has a world view and is sensitive to
the changing times. Contemporary art today is not restricted to the individual experience of the
artist but is reflective of the world that we live in. In this kind of art, you might see how events in
different countries might have effect on n Filipino living in Naga Tagbilaran.

Because art is produced by people and people are influenced by time, contemporary art is
a continuing practice that has evolved with the following new elements or principles:

Appropriation – When you see T-shirts with the image of Jose Rizal wearing shades or the
walls of Intramurals in canvas bags, existing artworks are “appropriated” to form another
artwork. The use of these prints images, and icons to produce another art form is a feature of
contemporary art that combines the past with the present. By appropriation, the contemporary
artist revives interest to existing forms of art.

Performance - Performance of contemporary artists has evolved to “emphasize spontaneous,

unpredictable elements of Performance of contemporary artists has evolved to “emphasize
spontaneous unpredictable elements of chance,” accrdg. to the Walker Art Center. Performance
artist have tried to interpret various human activities, from ordinary activities such as chores,
routines, and rituals, to socially relevant themes such as poverty, commercialism, and war.

Space - Art form that is performed in a specific space such as public places.

Hybridity - In contemporary art is the mixing of unlikely materials to produce an artwork.

Technology – Contemporary artist has used technology in the creation and dissemination of
works of art. Contemporary Artist have used video and the Internet as a way of
propagating art.
Big Idea
 Contemporary, modern, and postmodern pertain to different things.
 Performance and space create meanings as separate entities, as well as when they are combined to
create a spectacle.
 Because art is produced by people and people are influenced by time, contemporary art is a continuing
practice that has evolved with the following new elements or principle: appropriation, performance,
space, hybridity, and technology.
 The internet provides accessibility in experiencing art forms. But there is something breathtaking about
experiencing them in real life.
 Contemporary art refers to all networks created by artists that are living and are very representative of
our times. Many contemporary artists try to capture modern-day realities ranging from constant and
instant connectivity to borderless societies. Art in contemporary time has evolved into being
appropriated into another artwork, performed with a deeper understanding of life, created using varied
resources, and propagated with technology.

LESSON 3: PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY ART

INTRODUCTION

Renowned art critic and Metropolitan Museum Curator Dr. Patrick Flores
describes Philippine contemporary art with “The feeling (is) that all is possible in the
contemporary, conceived as a constantly extending and deepening constellation of art.”
Permits possibilities of exploring either subject or medium in art to express the Filipino
sense of self. You may not believe it, but every day, New art forms are being created in
our country that are becoming part of the contemporary art production of the Philippines.
At present, Filipinos are becoming more and more aggressive as they use the arts to
express themselves and create wonderful artworks that try to capture the Filipino way of
life. Go around the Philippines and you will see a mixture of the old the new.
Architecture in the country continues to be vibrant. With the improvement of tourism,
more first-class architecture is expected to pour in. At present, Filipinos are becoming
more and more aggressive as they use the arts to express themselves and create wonderful
artworks that try to capture the Filipino way of life. Look around you. In the most
unsuspecting corner of the street, in a moral along EDSA, in a mall or a high-rise condo,
or in a poem while riding the LRT or MRT, art is present. You see colorful jeepneys,
graffiti wall, and artistic murals created by talented and highly skilled Filipinos, and you
just can’t help but be amazed. Contemporary or modern art is not intended to be reduced
to conventional notions of space and medium. Contemporary artist has brought their
artworks into the street, in public, because in contemporary times, the main feat of any art
primarily depends on how the art is able to connect with spectators.

ARCHITECTURE

Go around in the Philippines and you will see a mixture of the old and the new. In
manila, the 16th century Binondo Church is just a few blocks away from the very modern
Lucky China Town. Each structure tells a story of how the art of building was used to
shape the course of history and society. Likewise, architecture in the country continues to
be vibrant. With the improvement of tourism, first-class architecture is expected to pour
in. Architect and critic Paulo Alcazaren note that today’s Philippine architecture is faced
with threats from globalization. He remarks, “Much of what we see, in terms of iconic
buildings in the Philippines nowadays, is either designed by foreigners, or are derivative
designs mimicking copies of western forms.”

LITERATURE

On Philippine contemporary literature, eminent scholar and writer Roland

Tolentino describes that the Filipino writing in today’s world contains the diasporic
experience and the incorporation of both the rural and the urban experience. Writers
have also explored the western genre and have produced legitimate texts on prose poetry,
flash fiction, magic realism, and science fiction. Dean Francis, Alfar, an award-winning
writer, pioneered the speculative fiction movement and has been publishing the
Philippine Speculative fiction series. Filipino writers are also getting recognition abroad.

 Miguel Syjuco
Bagged the Man Asian Literary Prize for his novel Ilustrado.

 Marivi Soliven
Published her novel The Mango Bride in 2013 under Penguin Books.
 Sophia Lee
Won the 2014 Scholastic Asian Book Award for her novel What Things Mean.
Contemporary Filipino writers are continuing to struggle with the low leadership among
the public and the domination of foreign titles in the market. Despite the odds,
contemporary Filipino writers continue to write without fail.

the expression of personal feelings and perspectives.
The influence of radical and modern art movements in Europe and the Americas have
penetrated the Philippine arts scene with the proliferation of installation and experimental
art.
Annual art competitions also play an important role in encouraging emerging artists to
create and produce their works.
The Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. has been recognizing young talents in the visual arts
for almost half a century.
Some past winners of this competition who became National Artists include Jose Joya,
Benedicto “Bencab” Cabrera, and Ang Kiukok.
Although some describe the Filipinos as people who spent around 400 years in a convent,
five years in a prison camp, and 45 years in Hollywood, our history and the way we
handle ourselves in the present is a heritage that we can very proud of.

responsibility in their craft. Dr. Tiongson challenges the artists to create art that has a
