SECTION - A
Q.1 Answer ANY FIVE questions of the following: (54=20)
(i) What is the need of starting circuit for starting the single phase induction motors. List
the various starting methods for the same.

(ii) Define resistor, inductor and capacitor. Give two practical applications of each in
everyday life.

(iii) Explain the difference between BJT and JFET.

(iv) How transformer efficiency is calculated?

(v) Explain the operation of PN junction with suitable diagram.

(vi) What is a Q point? Explain how load line can be used for fixing up Q point.

(vii) Explain the torque slip characteristics of 3 phase Induction motor.

SECTION - B
Q.2 Answer ANY FIVE questions of the following: (54=20)
(i) Transformer is not an energy conversion device. Justify the statement.

(ii) A 10kVA, 1000/500 V, 50 Hz single phase transformer has maximum value of flux in
the core as 8.4mWb. Calculate number of primary and secondary turns.

(iii) If vi=5sinwt, discuss and draw the output of the following circuit given in fig. below.

(iv) Why is the width of the base region in a transistor is kept very small compared to other
regions.
(v) If a star connected three phase system has phase current of 12 A and phase voltage of
120V. What will be the line current and line voltage for the same?

(vi) Define drift current and diffusion current in a semiconductor.

(vii) The equation of an alternating current is given by i = 60sin 400t. Determine:


(a) peak value
(b) frequency in Hz and radians per second
(c) r.m.s value
(d) average value and
(e) form factor for the same.

(viii) Why the yoke of a d.c. motor is made up of iron.

SECTION - C
Q.3 Attempt ANY TWO of the following: (210=20)
(i) Define the following terms:
(a) Apparent Power
(b) Real Power
(c) Reactive Power
(d) power factor

(ii) Describe the biasing of pn junction diode? How does a pn junction behave under
forward bias condition and reverse condition.

(iii) Discuss the starting methods of single phase induction motor.

(iv) Explain with neat sketches, the construction and working of a BJT.

SECTION - D
Q.4 Attempt ANY FOUR of the following: (410=40)
(i) Explain how BJT can be used as a switch in electronic circuits with the help of a neat
diagram.

(ii) The collector of a NPN transistor operating in active region is connected to 12 volt DC
supply through a resistance of 2 Kilo Ohm. If a DC current of 3 milli Ampere and AC
cuurent of 1 milli amp is flowing. Using superposition theorem, predict the DC and AC
voltage output at the collector of the transistor.

(iii) Differentiate between power transformer and distribution transformer.

(iv) Discuss and draw the output of the following circuit, if the peak to peak value of the
applied voltage is 10 V. Based on the output identify the circuit.

(v) FET is a Unipolar and Voltage controlled device. Justify. Also Compare BJT with FET.

(vi) Discuss the working principle of dc motor. Calculate the armature torque developed by
a 440V dc shunt motor having an armature resistance of 0.25 Ohm and running at 750
rpm when taking an alternating current of 60 A.
