Bees make honey from nectar collected from flowers. Young bees build the honeycomb cells while older bees collect nectar which they process and store in the comb. The bees evaporate water from the nectar through fanning to create honey that can be stored for long periods to feed the hive over winter.

How do bees make honey?

Bees make honey from nectar, a natural food produced by plants.

Honeybees process the nectar into a form that is delicious and can be ______________
for a long time. Some female honeybees called worker bees take on different parts of
the honey business at different time in their lives.

Young worker bees are known as house bees. They have the job of
______________ the honeycombs. These little worker bees are ready to work when
they are only two weeks old. They produce wax from glands in their bodies. Then, they
use their feet and their _____________ to build with the wax. Passing tiny bits of wax
from bee to bee, they build the six-sided cells that make up the ______________. Bees
work at this job for about three weeks.

Next, they move up to the job of field bees. Field bees go out to look for
_______________. They find nectar in the blossoms of clover, dandelions, berry
bushes and fruits trees. To get nectar out, they use their long, tube-like tongues and
______________ the nectar up as if they were using a straw. They store the nectar in
their honey stomachs, separate stomachs that are used only for nectar
_______________. A bee’s honey stomach can hold up to seventy milligrams of nectar,
which is about as much as the bee itself weighs. Once the stomach is full, it returns to
the ______________ and spit the liquid into other bees’ mouth. The bees chew the
liquid for a long time until it turns into honey. The bees then spit the honey into the
______________. To remove the liquid from the honey, the bees flap their wings to
create a fan effect. This causes the water to evaporate from the honey. The honey is
then soaked into storage cells with bee wax. It can be ______________ in these cells
forever, away from air and water. This means it can provide the bees with a food source
throughout the winter.
