Introduction to Steel Design
Structural Steel Design

An area of structural engineering

used to design steel structures. It
is strong without being extremely
heavy. This makes the ideal
material for large, multi-storey
buildings and manufacturing and
industrial facilities. Unlike wood,
steel can stand up to moisture
and is not susceptible to termites 2
and fire.
Types of Steel

1. Plain Carbon Steel (<1% Carbon)

2. Low-Alloy Steel (<5% Carbon)
3. High-Alloy Steel or Specialty Steel
(chronium is added for corrosion
resistance)

stamping, bending, etc.

Strength Property of Steel
• Yield strength of steel (Fy) – stress of a
material can withstand without permanent
deformation.
• Ultimate tensile strength of steel (Fu) –
maximum pressure a material can withstand
before failing or breaking.

Stress-Strain Relationships in
Structural Steel
Characteristics of steel can be examined through tensile test
and the following are the results:
1. Stress and strain are linear up to the Proportional Limit.
2. Upper yield point is quickly reached, then level off at the
lower yield point.
3. The stress remain constant but strain continues to increase
4. Load can still be applied in the specimen, causing a rise in
the curve.
5. The specimen reached its ultimate capacity, then necks.

6. Cross section is reduced in the failed area. 11
Properties of Section
▪ First Moment of Area- is commonly used in
engineering applications to determine the centroid of an
object or the statical moment of area.
▪ Second Moment of Area (Moment of Inertia)- a
measure of how resistant an object is to changes in its
rotational motion.
▪ Centroid
▪ Section Modulus – geometric property used in the
design of beams or flexural members
▪ Radius of Gyration – geometric property used for
compression.
▪ Parellel Axis Theorem – used to relate the second
moment of area of a cross-section, about any axis and
the moment of an axis parallel to it that passes through 12
the centroid.
