2.a Explain Cold working, the structural changes in metals, its advantages and 4M
disadvantages in details
Cold-working produces structural changes in polycrystalline metals and alloys
as follows:
1. Shape and Size of Grains
2. Orientation of Grains
3. Internal Structure of the Grains
2.b What does Distortion Energy criteria of ductile materials state. Explain in 4M
detail. Draw the yield locus of Von Mises and Tresca criteria
2.c The stresses acting on a component are as shown in the figure. The yield stress 2M
of the material is 350MPa. With the help of Maximum shear stress criteria,
establish whether yielding occurs for the given state of stresses
3.a How does True stress -strain curve varies from Engineering stress-strain curve. 3M
Explain in detail
3.b What are various methods of analysis of metal forming? Analyze the forming 7M
parameters with the help of Slab method in detail
• Slab method
• Uniform deformation energy method
• Slip-line field theory
• Upper and lower bound solutions
• Finite elemental method
4.a Explain closed die forging 2M
▪ Workpiece is deformed between the two die halves with the impressions of
desired final shape
▪ Deformed under high pressure in closed cavity – precision forgings with
close dimensional tolerances
▪ Forging billet –
1) fullered and edged to place the metal in the correct place
2) The pre-shaped billet is placed in the cavity of the blocking die – greatest
shape change
3) Finishing die – forged to final shape and dimensions
4.b What is Flash and describe its purpose 2M
✓ Important – to use enough metal – die cavity completely filled
✓ Slightly more metal is used – excess metal squirts out as thin ribbon - flash
✓ To avoid the formation of wide flash – flash gutter
✓ Final step – removal of flash with trimming die
✓ Flash serves:
1) Safety valve
2) Regulates the escape of the metal
Hammers Presses
Load restricted Stroke restricted
Deformation is in terms of weight of Slower and continuous pressure
the ram and energy –impact energy gives close tolerance on forgings
Lower costs Higher costs
Slower and moderate production Faster and higher production rates
rates
