Part 1
Narrator: Tracy is listening to an interview on the radio. Listen to the interview. The
interview will be played two times.
When you hear a beep (beep), answer the question. You now have 20
seconds to read the questions. (20-second music)
The interview will begin now.
[Diana: (lead in with music) Welcome to Star Talk. I’m your host, Diana Smith. We’re
happy to have the famous singer, Andy Chow, with us today. Thank you for
coming in for the interview, Andy. How are you?
Diana: Why were the past three years the toughest time of your life?
Andy: I was under a lot of stress. I was afraid that I’d become unpopular suddenly. I
kept thinking about that even when I was in bed, and could only sleep three
hours a day. I was always tired and started to eat a lot of snacks. Eventually,
I became both depressed and unhealthy. I often fell ill. Luckily, my manager
noticed my problem and introduced me to a counsellor and a nutritionist.
(beep) (8-second pause)
Diana: How did your counsellor help you get back on your feet?
Andy: My counsellor guided me to express my inner feelings and helped me
release my negative energy. He asked me questions and listened to me
patiently. Although it was difficult for me to talk about my feelings at first, I
was willing to talk more and more gradually. (beep) (8-second pause)
Diana: I see. How about the nutritionist? How did he or she help you?
Andy: The nutritionist guided me to improve my diet step-by-step. She advised me
to gradually reduce the amount of snacks like potato chips and sweets. She
also said I could replace some of the snacks with fruit. At the same time, she
advised me to start exercising. (beep) (8-second pause)
Diana: That sounds great. Did you limit the amount of snacks in the end?
Andy: Yes, I did. Now, I only eat a small amount of snacks twice a week. My
nutritionist has just set another goal for me. She asked me to cook with less
salt and sugar. Therefore, I’ve started to learn cooking in order to make
healthy and tasty dishes for myself. (beep) (8-second pause)
Diana: It takes a lot of hard work to stay healthy both physically and mentally.
Congratulations on your recovery!
Andy: Thank you! I’m healthier than ever because of my new routines. I’ve also
become more capable of expressing myself and releasing stress. My
experience in the past few years helps me write better songs too.
Diana: I’m looking forward to hearing more of your songs. Thank you for sharing
with us today, Andy! (beep) (12-second pause)]
Part 2
Narrator: Tracy is asking her dad about how to make a dessert. Listen to the
conversation. The conversation will be played two times.
When you hear a beep (beep), complete the recipe. You now have 20
seconds to read the recipe. (20-second music)
The conversation will begin now.
[Tracy: Dad, I need to write a dessert recipe for a school assignment. Do you know
any dessert that can be made within an hour?
Dad: Yes. I can teach you how to make chocolate lava cakes. They’re delicious
and easy to make.
Tracy: Which kind of chocolate should I use? Milk chocolate or white chocolate?
Dad: Hmm ... Milk or white chocolate may be too sweet. I suggest using dark
chocolate. The bitter taste makes the cakes more delicious. (beep) (12-
second pause)
Tracy: Next, I need to write down the instructions. What’s the first step of making
this dessert?
Dad: First, put the chocolate and butter in a bowl. Heat them in the microwave
oven for about one minute until you get a chocolate mixture. Set aside to cool
slightly for fifteen minutes. Then, preheat the oven to four hundred and fifty
degrees Fahrenheit. While you’re waiting, you can brush a thin layer of
cooking oil on the inside of the baking cups. (beep) (25-second pause)
Tracy: Then, I can mix the melted chocolate with the egg mixture, right?
Dad: Yes. Remember to add flour while you’re mixing. Then, you can pour the
batter into the baking cups and bake for ten minutes. After that, cover each
baking cup with an inverted plate. Flip the cups and plates over carefully.
Don’t remove the cups right away. Wait for ten seconds. Finally, sprinkle a
little powdered sugar on top and eat the lava cakes immediately. (beep) (12-
second pause)
Tracy: Dad, do you have any suggestions for first-time bakers like me?
Dad: Note that the baking time is not fixed. It depends on the cake size and your
oven. You must practise a few times to find out the perfect cooking time. If
you overbake the cakes, the centre of the cakes will harden and won’t have
the signature lava.
Tracy: Got it. (beep) (12-second pause)
Dad: You can also add something you like to your lava cakes. For me, I like adding
strawberries. The colours and tastes of them match very well.
Tracy: Thank you for telling me how to make chocolate lava cakes, Dad! I’ll try to
make some next week. (beep) (12-second pause)]
