The study entitled “Writing Indonesian and English Research Article Introduction: The
Implementation of Swales Model,'' was conducted in an attempt to provide a solution for writers
generally in writing a proper research article that is acceptable to the international community
journal.
● Research Design
The research design of this study is qualitative study by using document analysis method.
The updated version of the Swales model was used in this study. Those articles were then
analyzed and segmented thoroughly based on the format of Swales model, including move
and steps, which later from the analysis it would depict the writing pattern of those article
introductions.
Document analysis method - the process of analyzing and interpreting material to find
meaning, comprehend, and draw conclusions is what the document analysis approach, like
many other qualitative research methodologies, entails.
● Research Participants
The study's research participants consist of three preliminary research articles written in
Indonesian and three research articles written by speakers of English. The studies are
analyzed by using analysis model Swales (2004) for three purposes: 1) to identify the move
and their sub-units, step, used in research articles in Indonesian; 2) describes a generic
pattern identified in the preliminary research articles in Indonesian language; and 3)
comparing patterns obtained with generic scientific articles in English.
Introduction on each article in both Indonesian and English were analyzed divided into three
move and analyzed based on the purpose of communication in every step of text originating
from each move, which will be obtained writing patterns of each article
FINDINGS:
Based on its studies, unfortunately, the articles weren’t mentioned thoroughly. It was either
generalized based on the use of the CARS model. However, I will further discuss the general
result of this study based on how the CARS Model is applied.
● Article 1: 1 2 3 - 6
In article 1, the researchers dissected the article to provide results that utilize every
move of the model. We can see here that Move 1 is being utilized once, and then Move
2 is being used twice, since the study shows that steps 1a and 1b of Move 2 are utilized.
Furthermore, Move 3 is used three times in the study, resulting from the use of Step 1
twice, since in Move 3, all the subcomponents of Step 1 (whether a or b) are obligatory
for the author to analyze. And lastly, step 2 is being utilized once.
● Article 2: 1 2 5 - 8
The same as in article 1, in article 2, the researchers have imposed the same results in
moves 1 and 2 in article 1. The study shows that Move 1 is used once and Move 2 is used
twice. However, the result in Move 3 shows being utilized and examined five times in their
article.
● Article 3: 1 2 1 - 4
Article 4: 1 2 1 - 4
Both of these articles (AR 3 and 4) have the same result. In contrast to article 3, the study
shows that steps 1 a and b are shown in move 2, while steps 1 and 2 are being utilized in
move 2, in article 4.
● Article 5: 1 3 2 - 6
Article 6: 1 2 4 - 7
In article 5, three of the steps of move 2 are being utilized, and two of move 3 are used.
Lastly, article 6 shows a massive usage of move 3 in the study, which entails how the
research study will contribute new perspectives to the community. Hence, occupying the
niche is being utilized more.
SUMMARY:
To sum it up:
Genre analysis is a crucial aspect of discourse, as it helps to understand and
define the structure of communication. It is not just about the words used, but also
the way they are used. For instance, in a report, the speaker's chosen genre is chosen
to meet the listener's socio-cognitive needs. Genre is not just about the specific words
used, but rather the way they are used.
