Estimation of Amount of Fe and Fe Ions Present in The Given Solution Containing Mixture of Feso 7H Oandfe (So) (NH) So .24 H Ovolumetrically

This document describes a procedure to estimate the amount of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions present in a solution containing both ions. The procedure involves titrating the solution with potassium dichromate to separately determine the amounts of each ion present. Calculations are then shown to determine the masses of Fe2+, FeSO4.7H2O, Fe3+, and Fe2(SO4)3(NH4)2SO4.24H2O in the original solution.

Estimation of amount of Fe 2+ and Fe3+ions present in the given solution containing

mixture of FeSO4.7H2OandFe2(SO4)3(NH4)2SO4.24 H2Ovolumetrically

Aim: To estimate the amount of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ions present in the given solution containing
mixture of FeSO4.7H2OandFe2(SO4)3 (NH4)2SO4 .24H2O volumetrically using standard
solution of K2Cr2O7 and diphenyl ammine indicator.

Requirements: K2Cr2O7 (solid), concentrated HCl, 5 % HgCl2 solution, 3 % SnCl2 solution,

acid mixture (25 % H3PO4 + 75% H2SO4). 1 % diphenyl ammine solution etc.

Theory: Given solution contains mixture of Fe 2+ ions ( that is FeSO4.7H2O)and Fe 3+ ions

( that is Fe2(SO4)3 (NH4)2SO4 .24 H2O). In the first part of the experiment, only Fe 2+ ions are
estimated in presence of Fe 3+. In the second part of the experiment, Fe3+ ions are reduced to
Fe2+ then entire Fe 2+ ions are estimated.

K2Cr2O7 solution in the acidic medium acts as a strong oxidising agent. Standard solution of
K2Cr2O7 is taken in a burette. In the first part, during the course of titration, K2Cr2O7 oxidises
Fe2+ ions in the conical flask to Fe3+. A stage is reached during course of titration when all the
Fe2+ ions are converted to Fe3+ due to addition of K2Cr2O7solution. After this stage, the next
drop of K2Cr2O7 solution added from the burette oxidises the indicator- diphenyl ammine to
diphenyl benzidine which is brinjal violet in colour. This is the end point of the titration. Acid
mixture is added to make the medium strongly acidic in which K2Cr2O7 solution acts as an
oxidising agent. Besides this, acid mixture lowers the oxidation potential of the system and
helps in giving the sharp end point for the titration. Let titration reading be A mL. It
corresponds to volume of K2Cr2O7required for oxidation of Fe 2+. Note that Fe 3+remains
unaffected during this titration.

Fe is present as Fe 3+ in Fe2(SO4)3.(NH4)2 SO4. 24 H2O.In the second part of the experiment,Fe

3+
in the diluted solution taken in the conical flask is reduced to Fe 2+ by addition of SnCl2
solution. Later excess of SnCl2 is destroyed by addition of HgCl2 solution. Acid mixture is
added to make the medium strongly acidic. End point of brinjal violet colouration is obtained
as in case of first part of the experiment. Let titration reading be B ml. The volume (A – B
) mL of K2Cr2O7 corresponds to only amount of Fe 3+.

Procedure:

1. Prepare 100 mL of 0.1 N K2Cr2O7 solution.

[0.490 g of K2Cr2O7 is to be dissolved in distilled water. The solution so formed is to be
diluted to 100 mL by distilled water in a standard volumetric flask. Stopper the flask and
shake well].
2. Rinse and fill the burette with 0.1 N K2Cr2O7 solution.
Part – I : Estimation of Fe2+ ions in presence of Fe 3+from the given solution
3. Dilute the given solution up to the graduation mark by distilled water in a standard 100 mL
volumetric flask. Stopper the flask and shake well.
4. Rinse the pipette with diluted solution and pipette out 10 mL of it in to a conical flask. Add
5 mL of acid mixture 20 mL of distilled water and 2-3 drops of diphenyl ammine solution to
it and shake well. Solution turns yellowish green in colour.
5. Titrate the contents of the conical flask against 0.1 N K2Cr2O7solution from the burette. End
point of the titration is from yellowish green to brinjal violet colouration. Note down this
burette reading as a pilot reading.
6. Take three more readings and report them in a tabular form.

Part – II : Estimation of entire Fe2+ ions from the given solution

7. Pipette out 10 mL of diluted solution in to a conical flask. Add 3 mL of concentrated HCl to
it and boil. Solution turns yellow in colour.
8. Now add 3 % SnCl2 solution from the common burette to the above hot solution drop wise
with constant shaking of the flask till it become colourless. Add 2 to 3 drops of SnCl2 more.
9. Cool the contents of the conical flask by keeping it in water bath. Then add 5 mL of HgCl2
solution, 5 mL of acid mixture,20 mL of distilled water and 2-3 drops of diphenyl ammine
solution to it and shake well. Solution turns yellowish green in colour.
10. Titrate the contents of the conical flask against 0.1 N K2Cr2O7solution from the burette. End
point of the titration is from yellowish green to brinjal violet colouration. Note down this
burette reading as a pilot reading.
11. Take three more readings and report them in a tabular form.

K2Cr2O7 + 7 H2SO4 + 6 FeSO4 K2SO4 + Cr2(SO4)3 + 7 H2O + 3 Fe2(SO4)3
