Surface Area of Prism
The surface area of a prism refers to the amount of total space occupy by the flat faces of the prism. Finding the surface area of prism means calculating the total space occupied by all the faces of that respective type of prism or the sum of the areas of faces (or surfaces) in a 3D plane. Formula = bh+ (s1 + s2 + s3) H Problem solving 1.A triangular end has a base of 3 cm and height of 4 cm. The length of each side is 6 cm and the height of the prism (length of the rectangle) is 8 cm. What is the surface area of this triangular prism. Given: base-3 cm Height- 4 cm Length of each side- 6 cm Height of the prism – 8 cm Required: What is the surface area of the triangular prism? Equation: SA=bh+ (s1 + s2 + s3) H Solution: SA=3(4) + (3+6+6)(8) =12 +15 (8) =12 + 120 =132 cm2 Answer: The surface area of the gift Max bought of his moms is 132 square centimeters. 2. A triangular prism has a triangular end with a base of 5 inches and a height of 4 inches. The length of each side is 8 inches and the width of each side is 6 inches. What is the surface area of the prism? Given: base-5 inches Height- 4 inches Length – 8 inches Width of each side- 6 inches Required: What is the surface area of the prism? Equation: SA=bh+ (s1 + s2 + s3) H Solution: SA=5(4) + ( 5+6+6) 8 =20 + 17 (8) = 20 + 136 =156 in2 Answer: The surface area of the triangular prism is 156 square inches. 3. A triangular prims has a triangular end with a base of 8 feet and a height of 6 feet. The length of each side is 10 feet and the width of each side is 6 feet. What is the surface area of the prism? Given: base- 8 feet height- 6 feet length of each side- 10 feet width – 6 feet Required: What is the surface area of the prism? Equation: SA=bh+ (s1 + s2 + s3) H Solution: SA= 8(6) + (8 +6+6) (10) =48+20 (10) =48 + 200 =248 ft2 Answer: the surface area of the triangular prism is 248 square feet. 4. A triangular prism has a triangular end with a base of 12 inches and a height of 9 inches. The length of each side is 14 inches and the width of each side is 9 inches. What is the surface area of the prism? Given: base-12 inches height- 9 inches length- 14 inches width- 9 inches Equation: What is the surface area of the prism? Solution: SA=12(9) + (9 + 9 + 9) ( 14) =108 + 27 (14) = 486 in2 Answer: The surface area of the triangular prism is 486 square inches. 5. A triangular prism has a triangular end with a base of 4 inches and a height of 3 inches. The length of each side is 5 inches and the width of each side is 3 inches. What is the surface area of the prism? Given: base- 4 inches height- 3 inches length- 5 inches width- 3 inches Required: What is the surface area of the prism? Equation: SA=bh+ (s1 + s2 + s3) H Solution: SA= 4 (3) + (4 +3 + 3) (5) = 12 + 10 (5) =12 + 50 = 62 inch2 Answer: The surface area of the prism is 62 square inches. Surface Area of Cylinder The surface area of a cylinder can be defined as the total space covered by the flat surfaces of the bases of the cylinder and its curved surface. Formula: S.A. = πr2 + 2πrh Problem solving:
