BES Exercise1 1

The document describes an experiment to determine the moisture content of an aggregate sample. It provides the objective, theory, required apparatus, materials, procedure and formulas for calculating moisture content. The procedure involves weighing a sample before and after drying to determine the evaporated moisture percentage.

OBJECTIVE
To employ the process of drying using a method for determining the percentage of
evaporable moisture in a sample of aggregate.

THEORY
Drying a sample of aggregate to determine its evaporated moisture is a method whose
results are sufficiently accurate for the adjustment of batch weights of concrete. The
moisture in the test sample of aggregate may be measured more reliably through this
method.

APPARATUS
Oven
Sample container
Stirrer or metal spoon or spatula
Weighing balance (0.01)

MATERIAL
Sample of aggregate whose normal weight is not less than the value listed in Table 1.

PROCEDURE
1. Identify and weigh the sample container.
2. Put the sample aggregate into the container.
3. Weigh the container with the sample aggregate.
4. Dry the sample in the oven until such time that it has assumed a constant
weight.
5. Weigh the dried aggregate and container until both have cooled significantly.
