Subject 01 Part One: READING (15 pts)

Read the text carefully and do the activities:

Advertising helps inform people about the benefits of products and innovations. It is also a way
to engage the producer with the consumer on issues that matter to them. In fact, consumers are
increasingly exposed to advertising campaign in which they are often confronted with idealized
representations of the world (e.g., idealized situations, attractive models). A large amount of studies has
shown that ads presenting idealized images can have strong effects on consumer satisfaction and
welfare. However, obtained results were not consistent with each other. Some studies found that
advertising had a good effect on consumer satisfaction; other studies found that advertising had a
negative impact and led to consumer dissatisfaction .No research has ever try to resolve why conflicting
findings were obtained in this area of research. Moreover, there exists no extant consumer behaviour
model on the effects of advertising on consumer satisfaction.

Advertisers have brought the art of propaganda very near to perfection. The advertiser has
something to sell; he wishes to present his goods in the most favourable manner possible. Frequently, he
has to create on us a strong want for his goods. He will seek to arouse our emotions, appealing to our
desire to be healthier or more beautiful or better dressed than we are. At the same time, the skilful
advertiser will support his appeal with proofs that his goods are able to satisfy these desires.

Advertisers use many methods to get us to buy their articles. One of their most successful
methods is to make us feel dissatisfied with ourselves and our imperfect lives. Adverts not only inform
consumers about new products available on the local market but also show us who we aren’t and what we
don’t have .Our teeth aren’t white enough. Our clothes aren’t fashionable enough. Advertisements make
us afraid that people won’t like us if we don’t use the advertised products. Although we might not like to
admit it, advertisements on television and newspapers probably influence us much more than we think.
Each of us has a mental picture of the kind of person we would like to be .For example, a modern young
woman would like to think that she looks like a movie star. A middle-aged man might want to see himself
as a strong attractive athlete. Advertisers know this.

Subject 03 Part 1. Reading : (15 points)

a) Comprehension : Read the text carefully then do the activities: (8 points)

False advertising is the use of deliberately false statements or deception in advertising, in order to
gain a commercial advantage. As advertising has the potential to persuade people into commercial
transactions that they might otherwise avoid, many governments around the world use regulations to
control false, deceptive or misleading advertising.

Advertising the maximum is the most frequent deceptive and misleading method used by advertisers.
Internet service providers, for example, may advertise their service as offering "up to 256 kbit/s",
whereas on average use it could be just 20 kbit/s. The use of "up to" in the description protects them
legally, while raising false hopes in the customers. Further, in the fine print it is mentioned that this
includes both the download and upload speeds, deteriorating the customer's usage experience even
more.

The goal of regulations worldwide is, however, still preventing rather than punishing this false
advertising, reflecting the purpose of civil law in setting things right rather than that of criminal law.
The typical sanction is to order the advertiser to stop its illegal acts, or to include disclosure of
additional information that serves to avoid the chance of deception, but there are no fines or prison
time except for the infrequent instances when an advertiser refuses to stop despite being ordered to
do so. www.sharingyouressays.com

Death by advertising

Young people spend a lot of time in pubs, bars, discotheques and clubs. Because of this, they are
natural targets for advertisers working for liquor companies .Advertising campaigns often include offers
of cheaper drinks, free T-shirts, caps and posters .The aim is to introduce young people to new tastes
and brands of liquor and to create a future generation of drinkers. One vodka company actually held a
competition at a university .The prize was free vodka for a whole term.

Health experts strongly criticise this advertising. They argue that young people are unaware of
the dangers of alcohol, particularly the serious risk involved in drinking large amounts of liquor and then
trying to drive home. Young people, they say, do not realise how drinking affects their judgements and
reactions.

In many European countries, drinking is becoming increasingly popular with teenagers, and drunk
teenage drivers are often involved accidents leading to injury or death. In one case, a young girl
collapsed in her home after drinking 17 tequilas at a liquor promotion. Later, while she was leaning out of
the window to get some fresh air, she fell to her death.

Experts on alcoholism believe that the only way to prevent this trend is to make teenagers more
aware of the effects of alcohol and of the risks they take when they drink and drive. Perhaps they
should also show teenagers how they are manipulated by advertisers who are only concerned with their
profits and are not worried about the consequences.

Subject 05

Teenagers have become top consumers in today’s society, so advertisers have focused on getting
their business. Why are teens being targeted? Because they are taken on being fashionable, and their
number is expected to grow in the next decades. Winning teens over as customers today, means possible
long-term customers.

Teenagers are becoming big targets for advertisers due to their growing consumerism. They want to
show individuality by their clothes and possessions. They like to feel good about themselves, so they buy
new materials to produce that feeling. They are continuously purchasing new items to keep up with the
changing trends.

Therefore, advertisers use their view of teens to create ads; they use original, flashy, and funny ads
to reach the teenage audience. Advertisers use celebrities to endorse products because teens admire
them. Since teens are still trying to find themselves, advertisers try to create ads and brands that will
survive past the years of teenagers.

There is a controversial subject with advertising: teenage smoking is on the rise. As a result, tobacco
advertisements have been blamed for the increasing use of tobacco by teenagers. Despite the many
opinions that advertising is manipulative, a waste of time, and a bad influence on human being, there is no
way of providing it has a bad effect on people. It is simply intended to reveal the benefits of products
that consumers want, and consumers have the choice to buy.

A. COMPREHENSION

Greedy marketing executives have found a new way of selling their products to children. Besides
bombarding them on TV, in the streets and at school, the world’s junk food makers are trying to sell
their hamburgers, chocolate and soft drinks to children who play games on the Internet.

A new report says more than eighty percent of the world’s food companies are using this clever
method. The report was created by America’s Kaiser Family Foundation. It is called “It's Child's Play:
Advergaming and the Online Marketing of Food to Children”. It is the first major analysis of how food
companies advertise to children on the Web. It studies the tactics of companies such as Mars, and
McDonalds in targeting kids. The report says online advertisements are more effective than TV ads
at attracting children.

The report sadly brings a new word into the English vocabulary – the “advergame”. This is an
immoral technique to get kids attracted while they are having fun online. In addition, a variety of
other marketing tactics are used to get kids to spend long periods of time online. The food companies
fill the games with logos and advertisements. They encourage children to e-mail their friends about
products and brands. They also recommend children to join special clubs related to the games.
Children can increase their chances of winning games by buying the products and typing in special
codes found inside the packaging. Ethical concerns are raised about the role food advertising plays in
childhood obesity; some specialists warn the reach of online advertising is much deeper than that of
television.

Dear Sir / Madam

I feel I must complain about the lunch we had at your restaurant on Thursday 17th May.
Unfortunately, both the food and the service were not satisfactory.

To begin with, the dishes we ordered were not tasty because of heavy seasoning. There was also so
much salt and pepper on the food that it was impossible to eat the whole meal. Furthermore, your
advertisement was misleading as there were only two vegetarian dishes on the menu.

I must also point out that none of the dessert we ordered was fresh. In fact, they smelled bad and
the “delicious Italian cakes” were stale. As if this was not bad enough, the prices were far from
reasonable and contrary to what was stated in your advertisement; we found everything outrageously
priced.

To make matters worse, the air-conditioning was out of order. As a result, we felt hot and extremely
uncomfortable.

Finally, when we asked for the bill, we were surprised about the staff’s ignorance of the 10%
discount for group bookings. Again, this was something highlighted in your advertisement. We could have
made a fuss about it, but we decided not to.

Considering all the above, I believe I am entitled to a partial refund. I am confident that this matter
will receive your prompt attention. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

James Kent

Subject 08 : Part One: Reading A. Comprehension Read the following text carefully then do the activities.

Advertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they are criticized. Their critics feel angry
with them because they have so much money to throw around. “It’s unjust”, they say “that entirely
unproductive industry absorbs millions of pounds every year”.

Lots of big companies are making much profit. Why don’t they stop advertising and reduce the
price of their goods. The poor consumer would have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn’t create
many markets for products. It’s precisely because of heavy advertising that consumer goods are so
cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think that the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods.
Another important function is to inform. A great deal of knowledge we have about household goods
derive largely from the advertisements we read. They introduce us to new products or remind us of the
existence of a few ones we already know.

We mustn’t forget that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. The fact that
we pay so little for our daily paper, or enjoy so many broadcast programs is due to the money spent by
advertisers. Another thing to remember is the “small adverts” in every newspaper and magazine. What a
tremendous useful service they perform for the community. For example, you can find a job, buy or sell
a house, announce a birth, marriage or any other event..

The Children Who Don’t Know Chips from Potatoes

They are a staple part of the majority of children’s daily diets, but incredibly more than one in
three youngsters don’t know that chips come from potatoes. Almost a tenth of those asked the question
thought they were made of oil while others bizarrely believed they came from eggs, flour or apples.
Children’s ignorance of food source was discovered in a survey of pupils aged between 8 and 16 made by
the British Health Foundation.

When a group of children were asked by a chef to identify various fruits and vegetables, they
were confused. However all of them were able to identify fast-food chain restaurants like McDonald’s,
Quick and Pizza Hut from their logos

In the British Health Foundation survey 36 percent of the children claimed they did not know
that chips were made from potatoes and a similar number didn’t realize cheese came from milk.

Kids have lost touch with even the most basic foods and no longer understand what they are
eating. Banning junk foods or telling children not to eat them is not enough. We must engage children in
understanding why certain foods are less healthier than others, and encourage them to become
interested in what’s on their plate. This campaign is about talking to children in their language so that
they think about what they eat and start demanding healthier foods.

It is common truth today that publicity has a harmful effect on the individual. The aggression from
advertisements is growing in affluent societies. Whenever you are or wherever you go, and practically at
any moment of the day or night, advertisement is there waiting for you. The street, the home, the
office, the school, the stadium and every inch of the earth is a hostile environment, a battle field where
advertisements are constantly offending man's peace .

The impact of publicity is greater on the poor, deprived people than on the average working class
family. The poor are in need of almost every kind of modern comfort. Consumption goods and travels,
mention a few of their unsatisfied necessities. The working class on the other hand does not escape the
negative effects of publicity. They are the victims, too .They are the slaves of fashion

Consumption in modern societies

Today, everywhere in the world, people have developed a new attitude towards the act of buying
.The fact that markets are filled with all sorts of goods encourages everyone to engage in the purchase
of a large variety of items .Some of these are essential either because they contribute for our
biological survival like food and medicine or because they play an important part in protecting our mental
balance like songs and books.

But next to such vital things we find numerous elements which we feel obliged to acquire although
they do not have any determining role in our existence. It is in this case with fashion clothes, paintings,
objects of decoration, specially designed furniture, jewels and make up products. We can also integrate
in the same category the electronic devices that equip modern houses. The list still includes cameras,
phone-mobiles, silver dishes, gold watches, sun –glasses, sport cars, pleasure boats and a multitude of
the articles which we buy just because they are accessible in markets.

All these items do not add much to the basic needs of our species. Yet, all of us are eager to get
them provided we have the means to do so. They are gradually incorporated in our life and form an
important aspect of it. Initially, their production had no other aim than to provide a source of income
for their creators .Now, they have brought an additional feature to our life –style and participate in
shaping our personality to some extent .We are unable to abandon their use for the simple reason that
such an attitude will expose us to severe criticism from our fellows who will think that we no longer
belong to modernity and civilisation.

Nutrition

Nutrition is the science that deals with food and how the body uses it. People, like all living things,
need food to live. Food supplies the energy for every action we perform, from reading a book to running
a race. Food also provides substances that the body needs to build and repair its tissues and to regulate
its organs and systems.

What we eat directly affects our health. A proper diet helps prevent certain illnesses and aids in
recovery from others. An improper or inadequate diet increases the risk of various diseases. Eating a
balanced diet is the best way to ensure that the body receives all the food substances it needs.
Nutrition experts recommend that the daily diet include a certain number of servings from each of the
five major food groups: (1) breads, cereals, rice, and pasta, (2) vegetables, (3) fruits, (4) milk, yogurt,
and cheese, and (5) meat, poultry, fish, dried beans and peas, eggs, and nuts. Fats are also essential, but,
like sweets, should be eaten in small quantities.

Workers in the field of nutrition oversee school food services, plan menus for hospitalized patients,
and provide nutrition counselling for individuals. They administer international food programs and
investigate the relationship between diet and health. They seek improved ways of processing, packaging,

Advertising has become a very specialized activity in modern times. In the business world today,
supply is usually greater than demand.

There is a great competition between different manufacturers of the same kind of product to
persuade consumers to buy their favorite brand. They always have to remind the consumer of the name
and the qualities of their products. They do this by advertising.

The manufacturer advertises in the newspapers and on posters. He sometimes pays for songs about
his product in commercial radio programs. He employs attractive girls to distribute samples of it. He
organizes competitions with prices for winners. He has often advertised on the screen of local cinemas,

Advertisement today has a lot to do with almost all the aspects in our everyday lives. I absolutely
agree. Anywhere you go you will come across some kind of advertisement, weather it is on a billboard,
inside a magazine, on the outside of a public transportation vehicle, etc. It surrounds us every day,
everywhere, all the time.

I believe that for the most part, advertisements are an excellent source of getting a product out on
the market, and having success of people seeing or hearing about it. I also agree with the idea when it
says how some advertisements have unintended effects. This is a smart move on their part because the
young people of today will be the World's future. It really does help to sell products.

I have the same opinion that advertisements today are reaching out to all age groups; however, they
seem to target younger people a majority of the time. I never really thought of it like that before, but
when I do it makes perfect sense. If there were no advertisements for different products, then they
would never be so well known. The article says that most people don't realize that it is such a
persuasion, but it truly is. Like it was told in the article, if advertisers get certain name brands into
kid's heads now, they will most likely stick with that same brand in the future.

Advertising
Most companies all over the world work hard to promote their goods to sell them. Political parties,
cultural and religious also use advertising. In newspapers and magazines, many pages are full of
advertisements. There are also advertisements, usually called commercials, on radio and television.
Advertisements in newspapers and magazines are expensive and only the largest companies can afford
them. Small companies such as travel agencies advertise in a few lines only in small ads columns. Shops
and business, and individual wanting to buy or sell second-hand household goods advertise in local papers.

The wealthiest companies buy advertising time on television. Some advertisements are like very brief
episodes of a story.
Other ways of advertising include displaying large posters along roads, or small posters given to people
in the streets. Many companies now advertise on the internet. All advertisements must be legal, decent
and truthful.

Many people are against advertising; partly because it adds to the cost of product. People also say that
the influence of advertising is too great, and that the children especially want every product they see

Obesity causes numerous ailments, from heart disease to diabetes to cancer. In fact, the American

of obesity. This statement comes from evidence extrapolated from the annual number of cancer cases. It is the

Leaner and healthier lifestyles are key to reducing cancer risks.

mimicking the eating habits of their parents. It mom and dad are frequenters of fast food joints, it sends a clear
signal that hamburgers, fries, and jumbo-sized soft drinks are a reasonable diet choice.

New evidence indicates that the origin of weight problems later in life can be subtler than cheeseburgers
and the like. If kids drink two or more sweetened drinks daily as early as five years of age, then they tended to
weigh more and have higher contents of body fat than kids who abstained from sweetened drinks. In addition, past
studies certainly indicate that overweight teens have a greater likelihood of becoming obese as adults, leading to
health problems like cancer.

Energy drinks packed full of caffeine may be harmful for children. That’s the conclusion of a new
report from the University of Miami. Study author Judith Schaechter said popular drinks like Red Bull
and Monster Energy have no health benefits. Many of the ingredients used to make them are not
regulated. Dr. Schaechter warned that children with conditions such as diabetes, mood swings and
heart, kidney or liver diseases may have negative reactions to the drinks and could even die after
drinking them. Report co-author Steven Lipshultz said: “Pediatricians need to be aware of the possible
effects of energy drinks.” He advised that: “Toxicity surveillance should be improved and regulations
of…sales…should be based on appropriate research assessing energy drink safety.”

Nearly a third of American children between the ages of 12 to 14 years regularly buy these
beverages. Sales are steadily rising in the U.S. from$6.5 billion in 2008 to $6.9 billion in 2009. Sales for
2010 are expected to be much higher. American teens say the drinks help them at school. Tracy Wong,
18, said she needs them because, “it pumps my system full of caffeine. That's why I have energy.
Caffeine energizes you and keeps you awake." A Red Bull spokesman said: “Red Bull Energy Drink is
available in over 160 countries because health authorities across the world have concluded that [it] is
safe to consume.” However, it is banned in Germany and Taiwan for containing minute traces of cocaine.

Health authorities in Britain have advised against eating too much red meat. The British
government has issued a set of red meat guidelines which caution against eating more than 500 grams a
week, or 70 grams a day. This is the equivalent of two beef burgers. Scientists say that eating more
than this increases the risk of getting colon and bowel cancer. The new limits are down on the 90 grams
a day recommended in 1998. Researchers think people who eat a lot of meat like lamb, beef, ham and
bacon have a higher risk of cancer. A 2005 European study found people who ate about 160 grams of red
meat a day increased their bowel cancer risk by one third compared to people who ate little meat. People
have around a one in 19 chance of developing bowel cancer in their lifetime.

Experts told people the new guidelines did not mean people had to abandon red meat. The head of
health information at Cancer Research U.K. said: "This doesn't mean people have to become vegetarian,
but if you're having a steak every day, that's probably not helping.” Scientists are unsure as to why red
meat increases the risk of colon cancer. They suspect that haem, the pigment that gives meat its colour,
damages the cells in the digestive system and the lining of the colon. A World Cancer Research Fund
official said: "Following simple diet and lifestyle advice can help protect against cancer. Red meat can be
part of a healthy balanced diet. It is a good source of protein and vitamins and minerals…But people who
eat a lot of red and processed meat should consider cutting down.”

Chinese consumers are losing confidence in their country’s dairy industry after the latest tainted
milk products scandal. Almost 6,500 babies and children have become ill and four have died. Several
hundred infants now have extreme kidney failure. Many parents are furious and upset that their young
children need operations to remove stones from their kidneys. The reason for this tragedy is milk
powder makers adding a poisonous plastic compound to their products. The country’s biggest dairy
company, the Sanlu Group, admitted finding the deadly melamine chemical in its baby powder. Melamine
increases the level of protein in milk. The same chemical has also been found in liquid milk. Supermarkets
are clearing their shelves of domestic milk products.

The Chinese government has ordered emergency checks on all dairy products. It found ten per
cent of the items it tested contained melamine. Officials have promised consumers that they will punish
those responsible for the scandal. China’s news agency Xinhua reported: "Local authorities should rectify
the dairy industry so as to bring a fundamental change to the dairy market and products." The crisis has
spread beyond China’s borders, with Malaysia, Singapore and Japan banning Chinese milk imports.
Starbucks coffee chain in China has reacted quickly. Hundreds of its coffee shops have stopped serving
drinks with milk, which is affecting its business. A company spokesman said this was a precaution “due to

Buy Nothing Day is a great way of reminding yourself you don’t need to go shopping. In today’s
world, most of us buy too much, too often. There is really no need for us to buy half the stuff we
purchase. In fact, make that three-quarters, or even nine-tenths. Shopping has become an addiction for
many people. Companies are experts at making us buy stuff. TV and Internet ads can even make us buy
things we don’t really want. There is a well-known bumper sticker that says: “When the going gets tough,
the tough go shopping.” I would say only foolish people go shopping to reduce their stress. Anyway, Buy
Nothing Day is a fantastic way to avoid crowded stores, save some money (for once) and spend time
wisely.

Lots of ideas on how to spend this day are on the www.buynothingday.org website. Here, you learn
that you actually help save our planet by not going shopping. You consume less and this means we use
fewer of Earth’s resources. We easily run out of money when we go shopping, but we can also run out of
our planet’s animals, forests, water and a lot more. The website suggests you lock your credit card away
for the day and keep your cash under the bed. You will not be alone. The website says: “Buy Nothing Day
is the biggest 24-hour [campaign] against consumerism. People around the world will make a pact to take
a break from shopping as a personal experiment or public statement. And the best thing is, it’s free."

The health time bomb of obesity is exploding. Already one in three UK children is obese or
overweight. Unless we act, by 2050 over half of adults and almost half of children will be
clinically obese. Given that obesity takes, on average, 13 years from the life of sufferers,
this could lead to the first fall in life expectancy for over 300 years.

A key cause of the obesity crisis is our poor diet. The vast majority of UK
children consume too much salt, fat and sugar and almost all of them don't get enough fruits
and vegetables. In addition to obesity, poor diet is causing a rise in diabetes, heart diseases
and other health problems.

It is no coincidence that children eat the foods they see on advertisements.

Marketers spend over £ 300 million on food promotion - almost always unhealthy - on TV
before 9 pm, and this money is not wasted. Children and parents both say the constant
marketing of funk food is one reason why they consume so much of it. In fact almost three-
quarters of parents say that junk food advertising influences their children's food choice.
Of course children's diets are the responsibility of their parents. But hard-pressed mums and
dads need some help.

To ban junk food advertising before 9pm is the best way to protect children. Over
70 per cent of children's TV viewing is outside the hours of children's TV (when the
government's advertising restrictions apply). The commercial TV programmes that children
watch most are Ant & Dec, The X Factor and Coronation Street. Unless we protect children
from TV adverts during these programmes we will not tackle the obesity crisis.

A new study has found that energy drinks and sports drinks cause irreversible damage to teeth,
with energy drinks being twice as damaging as sports drinks. A report recently published in the journal
"General Dentistry" found that the high acidity levels in the drinks erode tooth enamel, the glossy outer
layer that protects the tooth. Lead author Dr Poonam Jain said: "Young adults consume these drinks
assuming that they will improve their sports performance and energy levels and that they are ‘better’
for them than soda….Most of these patients are shocked to learn that these drinks are essentially
bathing their teeth with acid."This has led to an increase in tooth decay and the need for fillings.
The report says 30 to 50 per cent of American teenagers regularly consume sports and energy
drinks, with as many as 62 per cent drinking at least one sports drink a day. It also says brushing teeth
after drinking one of the drinks does more harm than good as this will spread the acid over the tooth
enamel. The doctors advised people to wait at least an hour before brushing your teeth. Dr Jennifer
Bone of America's Academy of General Dentistry recommended people chew sugar-free chewing gum
and rinse the mouth with water after drinking the drinks. She said: "Both tactics increase saliva flow,
which naturally helps to return the acidity levels in the mouth to normal."

Dear Sir or Madam

We are writing to complain about our holiday in Venice. We stayed in the “four-star” Hotel Rialto in
June. The travel agent told us it would be fine at the time of the year, but it was not “sunny”: it rained
every day and the streets were flooded .As a result, we couldn’t walk the famous streets of Venice.
Your brochure said the “rooms overlook a canal’ but our room overlooked a narrow street with a view
of a brick wall. Your brochure also said the hotel had beautiful antique Venetian furniture-our room only
had an uncomfortable bed and an old chair. When we complained to the receptionist, she offered us a
suite-at an additional charge!
In a four-star hotel! I expect to find a satellite TV, but there wasn’t one in our room. When we
asked the receptionist, she said there weren’t any TVs in the hotel and that we could watch TV at home.
In addition to all these problems, room service was too slow.
In conclusion, our holiday at Venice was ruined by all these inconveniences. We are unhappy with the
service and we would like our money back. We wait your reply and our compensation.
Yours faithfully
Peter and Amy Harrison
