Q1. What is a computer network?
Ans. A computer network is a group of computers and peripheral devices, connected through a data
commmunication system. It facilitates the sharing of hardware and software resources among
different users.
Q2. Explain the function of server and client in a network.
Ans. Server: A server is a powerful computer or a series of computers with high speed and great
processing capability. It can link other computers or electronic devices together over servers to
provide important services across a network to both private and public users via the internet.
Client: A client is a computer system which uses a network to access a remote service from the
server. It can access all the applications or information from the main sever. A client is also known
as a node.
Q3. Define the term internet.
Ans. The internet is a worldwide network of computers that uses common communication standards and
interfaces to provide the physical backbone for a number of interesting applications. Computers on
the Internet use remote server machines to share files and devices with the user machines.
Q4. What is a web browser? Name some popular web browsers.
Ans. A Web browser is a software for accessing information and resources on the World Wide Web.
Some popular browsers are – Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Apple
Safari, etc.
Q5. What is a webpage?
Ans. A web page (or webpage) is a hypertext document on the World Wide Web. Web pages are
delivered by a web server to the user and displayed in a web browser. A website consists of many
web pages linked together under a common domain name.
Q6. What is a search enging? Name some common search engines.
Ans. A search engine is a software system designed to carry out web searches. They search the World
Wide Web in a systematic way for particular information specified in a textual web search query.
Some common search engines are – Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, etc.
Q7. Define the term 'plugin'.
Ans. A plug-in is a software which provides additional functionality to the browser allowing it to display
the content.
Q8. What is a virus?
Ans. A virus is a harmful program which when enters the computer, affects the performance of the computer and
destroys its data.
Q9. Define the term 'anti-virus'. Give some examples.
Ans. Anti-virus programmes are used to detect and destroy computer virus. Examples of some anti-virus
programmes are Norton, Kaspersky, Quick Heal, McAfee, etc.
