Course objective
The course aims to introduce students with basic principle of thermodynamics in understanding
heat transfer and efficiency analysis of heat engines and process units in process industry.

Learning outcome
At the end of this course, the students will be able to:

 Learner should be able to demonstrate understanding of basic concepts of


thermodynamics.
 Explain thermodynamic laws and their application
 To understand the concepts of energy transformation, conversion of heat into work.

 To understand the fundamentals of differences between work producing and work
consuming cycles.
 To apply the concepts of thermodynamics to basic energy systems.
 Apply the concept of Carnot Principles for efficiency analysis of refrigeration and heat
pump.
 To differentiate between quality and quantity of energy, heat and work, enthalpy and
entropy, etc.
 To Analyze basic power cycles, apply the laws of thermodynamics to various real life
systems

 Phase of pure substance
 Property diagram for phase change processes
 Equation of state: Ideal gas equation, Virial Equation, Cubic
Equation
 Generalized Correlations for Gases
 Generalized Correlations for Liquids
Chapter Three 3. Energy and First Law of Thermodynamics
 Mechanisms of Energy Transfer

Chapter Four 4. Heat Effects
