THIS QUESTION PAPER CONSISTS OF 4 PAGES INCLUDING THE COVER PAGE

ASSESSOR MODERATOR
Question 1 [15 Marks]
Suppose you are going to teach the main concepts in each of the following questions. For each
question prepare a solution and state ONE main SMART objective you will consider.
1.1 𝑃 and Q are the points of intersection of the line,
𝑥 𝑦
+ = 1, (𝑎 > 0, 𝑏 > 0)
𝑎 𝑏
with the 𝑥 −and 𝑦 −axes respectively. The distance 𝑃𝑄 is 10 and the gradient of
𝑃𝑄 is −2. Find the value of 𝑎 and the value of 𝑏.
(8)
1.2 Find the equation of the circle whose centre is at the point (5, 4) and internally
divides a line segment joining the points 𝐴(0, 5) and 𝐵(4, 1) in the ratio 1: 3. (7)
Question 2 [30 marks ]
Suppose you are going to teach the main concepts in each of the following questions.
State and justify the necessary prior knowledge you will consider.
[ Hint: Solve each question first.]
2.1 Two circles, which touch both the x-axis and the line 3x − 4y + 3 = 0, have their
centres on the line x + y = 3. Find the equations of the two circles. (12)
2.2 A line parallel to the 𝑥-axis passes through the point 𝐴(1,5) and meets at B the line
𝑃𝑄 whose equation is 2𝑥 − 3𝑦 − 5 = 0.
2.2.1 Find the length of 𝐴𝐵, (4)
2.2.2 Find the sine of the angle between PQ and AB (5)
2.2.3 Show that the length of the perpendicular from 𝐴 to 𝑃𝑄 is
18√13 (4)
13
2.2.4 Calculate the area of the triangle formed by 𝑃𝑄 and the axes. (5)
Question 3 [ 30 marks]
3.1 A circle has its centre at the point of intersection of the common tangents to the
circles:
𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 8𝑥 + 12 = 0, 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 − 9 = 0
If the circle passes through the points of intersection of the given circles , (7)
determine its equation.
3.2 Suppose you are planning to teach the main concept(s) in Question 3.1.
3.2.1 State a suitable main SMART objective for this lesson. (3)
3.2.2 State the necessary prior knowledge for this lesson. (5)

3.2.3 Write a lesson introduction outline for this lesson , showing teacher and
learner activities clearly. (5)
3.2.4 Describe how you would present the lesson to your learners, showing
teacher and learner activities clearly. (10)
