Summative Task: Modeling with Quadratic Functions

Criterion D: Applying Math in Real-life contexts

Name: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Time: 1 Period

Part B: Tiger in Trouble!

You have seen that quadratic functions can be written in different ways.
• y =ax 2 +bx+c
• y = a( x- h)2 + k
• y=a(x-p)(x-q)

You are to find a curve that can model a golf shot. The shot must satisfy the following
criteria:

• The golfer plays the shot from a coordinate of (0, 0).

• The ball must clear a tree which is 30 meters away from the golfer and which is 20
meters high.
• The shot should be played such that the ball stays as low as possible but clears the
tree. ,
1. Decide which form of the quadratic function is going to be most useful. To help you
decide you should consider the information given. ·

Prove that the equation of the quadratic function that represents this scenario can
be given as h(d) = - i d 2 + d where h is the height of the ball and d is the horizontal

distance. (Note: you cannot use this equation, you need to PROVE this equation)

Use your model to answer the following question.

4.The original shot was played from a distance of 125 meters from the hole. After playing
the shot over the tree, the ball hit a sand bunker.

How far is the ball from the hole?

6. A basketball player is aiming for a free throw.

• The player releases the ball at a height of 7 feet.

• The player stands 15 feet away from the basket.
• The basket is 10 feet high.
• After releasing the ball, the ball reaches a height of 1_0 feet, 2 feet away from the
player.
• The ball reaches a maximum height of 14.225 feet.

Use this information and roughly model this situation.
