CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

As part of the requirement for the award of Btech Accounting and Finance, students are required
to undergo a practical industrial training and acquaint themselves with current technological
development in the industries.

The internship program was to help the student body acquire more practical skill about what they
were taught during lectures. An industrial attachment is structured, credit bearing work
experience in the professional work and requires knowledge and skills. It involves the
application of learned skills in an organization related to the student’s major study. An industrial
attachment should challenge the student to examine the values of an organization and
experiences as well as to assess the student’s education as it relate to the industrial attachment.

ABSTRACT

The industrial attachment is a program designed to help student acquire hard skills in addition to
the soft skills they have. The industrial liaison office which is the head of the industrial
attachment gave the student’s a log book which is to help the student make summary of all
activities that took place from the period of commence to end and also what they were able to
learn as a student.

The book contains pages which the student will be access base on their performance, abilities to
understand what they are doing, ability to perform work without or with less supervision, being
punctual, coming to work on time, acting with due care and skills at work place, performing of
task which are assigned, and many more.

5
BRIF HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION

Rural banks were first established in Ghana in 1976 to provide banking services to the rural
population, providing credit to small-scale farmers and businesses and supporting development
projects, with the first being in Agona Nyakrom in Central Region. The banks are locally owned
and managed. By 2002 115 rural banks had been established. They are supervised by the
clearing bank ARB Apex Bank under the regulation of the Bank of Ghana, which owns shares in
the banks.

The history and business model of the Rural and Community Bank (RCB) network in Ghana,
analyzes its performance, identifies key issues, and makes recommendations on the way forward.
The study analyzes the service delivery and financial performance of the RCBs. Before the
establishment of RCBs in the late 1970s and the subsequent expansion of other service providers
into rural areas, access to institutional credit for farm and nonfarm activities was scarce. The
main sources of credit were moneylenders and traders that charged very high interest rates. In
many rural communities, secure, safe, and convenient savings and payment facilities hardly
existed.

The first RCB was established in a farming community in the central region of Ghana in 1976.
Rural communities showed tremendous interested in the community ownership and management
features of RCBs, and by 1984 the number of RCBs reached 106. The introduction of a check
payment system for cocoa farmers also spurred the establishment of local banks in many
communities. The financial performance of many RCBs started to decline, however, for several
reasons, including a drought that affected the country in 1983, weak governing ability, conflicts
within boards of directors, and ineffective management in many RCBs. By the end of 2008, 127
RCBs were in operation with a total 584 service outlets. RCBs are regulated by Ghana’s central
bank, the Bank of Ghana, and thereby form part of the country’s regulated financial sector. RCBs
are the largest providers of formal financial services in rural areas and represent about half of the
total banking outlets in Ghana.

RELEVANCE OF THE AREAS COVERED

Accounting plays a vital role in running a business because it helps you track income and
expenditures, ensure statutory compliance, and provide investors, management, and government
with quantitative financial information which can be used in making business decisions.

International Accounting Standard One (IAS 1) give key financial statements generated by
entities records

 Statement of financial position as at the end of the accounting year. It gives you a clear
picture on the financial position of your business on a particular date.
 Statement of profit and loss and other comprehensive income for the period. It provides
you with information about the profit and loss.
 Statement of changes in Equity for the period.
 Statement of cash flow. Is a bridge between the income statement and balance sheet and
reports the cash generated and spent during a specific period of time.

9
 It is critical firms keep financial records clean and up to date if they want to keep the
business afloat. Below are just a few of the relevance of the areas covered?
 It helps in Evaluating the Performance of Business; Firms financial records reflect the
results of operations as well as the financial position of the business or corporation. In
other words, it helps financial users understand what’s going on with the business
financially. Not only will clean and up to date records help firms keep track of expenses,
gross margin, and possible debt, but it will help firms to compare its current data with
the previous accounting records and allocate its budget appropriately.
 It ensures statutory compliance; Laws and regulations vary from state to state, but proper
accounting systems and processes will help you ensure statutory compliance when it
comes to business. The accounting function will ensure that liabilities such as sales tax,
VAT, income tax, and pension funds, to name a few, are appropriately addressed.
 It helps to create Budget and Future Projections: Budgeting and future projections can
make or break a business, and firm’s financial records will play a crucial role when it
comes to it. Business trends and projections are based on historical financial data to keep
the firm operations profitable. This financial data is most appropriate when provided by
well-structured accounting processes.
 Businesses are required to file their financial statement with the registrar of companies.
Listed entities are required to file them with stock exchanges, as well as for direct and
indirect tax filing purposes. Needless to say, accounting plays a critical role in all these
scenarios.

The presentation was very relevant especially in the following areas

1. Knowledge gain in accounting information system. Thus Accept data, Processes
data and Generates output.
2. IFAC Code of Ethics for professional Accountants. i.e., Fundamental principles,
threats and safeguards.
3. Reasonable knowledge gain on IASB Conceptual Framework.
4. Information provided on the requirements of industrial specifications.
5. Advice on attitudes toward work.

How to organize documents

The following steps guided me in sorting, categorizing and storing my physical paperwork and

help me design an effective filing system:

 Separate documents by type.

 Use chronological and alphabetical order

17
 Organize the filing space.

 Color-code your filing system.

 Label your filing system.

 Dispose of unnecessary documents.

Digitize files.

I explore each of these steps in more detail so you can apply this simple organization system in

any workplace.

I. Separate documents by type

I sorted physical documents into categories such as reports, student documents or student

registration. I further separate each category into levels of subtypes. For example, I sort student

documents based on each student registration number before organizing a single student’s

documents into reports, correspondence and more. This layered sorting strategy can helped me

identify what documents to keep and organize for easy access.

If found documents that do not fit into a major category, I make a miscellaneous stack along with

a pile of documents you intend to shred

II. Use chronological and alphabetical order

Some documents are time-stamped and dated to keep track of activities and decisions within the

organization. Once separated by type and subtype, I consider sorting each document in

chronological order, if applicable. For example, if I sort documents by student registration

number, I consider placing dated documents in order from newest to oldest so the most recent

documents are in front. I also order the documents from oldest to newest.

18
I organize undated documents by importance or by how frequently you use them. Finally, I

consider alphabetizing all documents before placing them into the filing space.

III. Organize your filing space

Filing cabinets and drawers can offer customizable storage space. Use file folders to store groups

of documents based on their type and subtype. You can continue using chronological or

alphabetical order when placing folders into cabinets or drawers. For example, you can sort

alphabetically by client name or chronologically by the most recent client you acquired. Storing

paperwork away from your workspace helps keep your desk clear for you to complete tasks more

efficiently.

Consider investing in a file shelf to place on your desk to organize documents you review or

access regularly, such as forms you fill out every day. Each shelf can be assigned a specific type

or subtype to maintain categorization. You can also use the shelf to streamline your filing

process as you receive new documents. Separate new files into a few major categories, and place

them on the appropriate shelf. This method can make it easier when you file them away later.

IV. Color-code your filing system

Visual markers, such as colored tabs, can save you time when browsing for documents. You can

use different colored folders for your various types and subtypes of documents. Some folders

include label tabs in various colors. With either of these options, you can create a color-coded

key to keep track of the color assigned to the document category.

V. Label your filing system

19
Labeling your document categories can help you quickly identify your intended folder. Some

folders come with paper to make your own labels. You can either hand-write the labels or print

out a sheet of typed labels all at once.

You can further optimize your labeling system by using different colored pens or ink that match

your color-coded key. Highlighters can also be used on black text to color code the label. Label

makers can also allow you to quickly print out single-label stickers. This tool is especially

helpful when labeling a filing shelf or cabinet, or if you need to replace current labels with new

ones.

VI. Dispose of unnecessary documents

Creating an organized filing system can help you find ways to reduce the amount of paperwork

you store. Recycle documents that are no longer relevant in order to reduce clutter, or shred them

for extra security.

Consider placing a small recycling can or a dedicated basket for documents you want to shred

near your desk. Regularly disposing of unnecessary files and documents can help keep your

workspace clean and organized.

VII. Digitize files

In some cases, it might be more efficient to convert physical documents into digital files stored

on your computer. Doing so can make them easily accessible, spendable and reduces clutter. If

this is the case, scan paperwork into digital documents for storage in organized folders on your

computer. Consider following the same steps you took when creating a physical filing system:

20
CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED

In the cause of my industrial attachment at Denkyiraman Rural Bank, so many things where far
different from what I learnt from the class room. As a result, I encountered some few challenges
at the beginning of the attachment. With the help of my supervisor and the work team present at
the work place I was helped out. Below are some of the challenges I encountered.

 Daily Transportation to work was not easy since the organization has no bus to pick up its
workers.
 Making records using the deposit payment slip was quite challenging at the beginning.
 Inadequate equipment to carry out duties.

ACQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES

Throughout my industrial attachment, I acquired new knowledge and skills that would hopefully
help build my self-confidence and also help build a better career life.

Professionally, I had the opportunity to practically feel some of the academic work I acquired

from school during the attachment program. Examples are preparing a trial balance, statement of

financial position, deposit processing using software and archiving and filing of document.

Report writing of field exercises, Meeting proceedings, Respect for the privacy of others and the

promises of confidentiality given to people and retrieving of secondary data from the computer

to clients cannot be over emphasized. As we use to say accountancy is about truth and fair.

Personally, my confidence level has improved greatly. My interactions with people and top

officials paved some social contacts for me. Good friends were made, efforts to understand

people and ability to use account with software. Working under stress conditions could not be

overlooked.

21
Working at the of Denkyiraman Rural Bank Ltd has given me a feel of the working environment,

not only have improved my human relation with co-workers but also patience as well. I also

learnt how to manage and deal with the Bank customers, workers other departments and even

other stake holders coming to the bank. During my internship at of Denkyiraman Rural Bank

Ltd, I have gained practical knowledge all the courses I took as a theory.

My stay with the Denkyiraman Rural Bank Ltd resulted in gaining a lot of skills, which include

technical, skills, communication skills, analytical skills, human relation skills, conflict handling

skills and many more are listed.

Technical skills

Working at Denkyiraman Rural Bank Ltd helped me in acquiring new skills. Prior to attachment

little knowledge about Microsoft Excel was acquired. I was also introduced to the bank software

known as Temenos T24 reverse to R20. At first it was difficult to use the Temenos T24 reverse

to R20 software. As more exposure was gained, inputting information, producing different

reports, for example using it to entering daily Susu capturing data and using it to reconcile bank

and customer statement.

Communication Skills

Having learnt communication skills as a course in my programmer of study, I practically

acquired more knowledge in expressing myself freely with superiors and subordinates at the
banking hall. I gained more knowledge in preparing documents using the theoretical
documentation I did at school. Good communication skills make up a better understanding in
communication and making the flow of information easier and efficient.

Communication skills were acquired especially when working at academic department. One of

the duties of the customer service department was to talk to clients’ almost on a daily basis to

22
inform them about their schedules and any queries they needed to be attended to. As a result, I

learnt to be polite, patient and tolerant with different characters. Good communication improves

the bank’s image to its outside world. With particular attention to verbal skills, I noticed a big

improvement. It was a frightening thing consulting other department and Directors when certain

information has to be delivered to them.

Self Confidence

At first, I lack this skill when talking to my supervisor or even to those who would want to be

served. However, later on, I became adapted to the working environment. I could even complete

tasks from one department to another under the clear notion that I was doing the right thing. As

I began to settle my confidence got built up and in meetings like those of reporting on student

issues, intelligence. I was able to give out my findings, explain them in detail and defend them

against criticism.

Self-initiative

I had a driving force in me that pushed me to execute my tasks. I would not wait for the

supervisor to coerce me carrying out my duties. In some trivial cases, this needed a quick

decision to be made; I had to pass decisions to avoid curbing the process by consulting my

assistant supervisor.

Time Management

Having learnt in school that time management is beneficial importance in life applications. As I
always does manage my time at school well, being punctual at class and on time, I was able to
act accordingly and be at work on time and also does every work assigned on time and making
the right work. Time management being the key factor in every human activity, I acquired skills
in how to work effectively on time.
23
Interpersonal Relationship

During my campus stay, I learnt how to relate with people with different kinds of attitude.
During my attachment training, I gained knowledge in how to relate with staff, superiors and
subordinates as well as customers who comes to the workplace to register their businesses
account and other personal accounts. This experience motivated me well to work hard with staff
and hence moving the motive of the organization high.

24
CHAPTER FOUR

GENERAL COMMENTS

I realized that the attachment was really good and this will help students to acquire new skills
and improve their studies at school.

OBSERVATIONS

Practically I observed that the industrial attachment is a source of encouragement to the general
student body and with this student must be motivated in fulfilling their aims. Also, I observed
that due to non-incentives being given to interns made some colleagues late for work and also
some were not punctual. Also, with this some students were not putting up their best and making
out with great output just because there were no incentives and motivation given to them.

Observation and Impression

Observation

This is a SWOT analysis I performed base on my observation and impression about

Denkyiraman Rural Bank Ltd.

SWOT Analysis

SWOT analysis is a study undertaken by an organization to identify its internal strengths and
challenges, as well as its external opportunities and threats.

Strength

 Reputation of the Bank

 Excellent customer service

25
 Strong relationship with existing customers
 Good Infrastructure and conducive environment

Weakness

 Few employee motivation schemes

 Lack of job commitment of some employees
 Electricity energy issues and plant capacity

Opportunity

 Increase modern banking services to grab more market share

 Increase the number of customers and branches.
 Clients become more concern regarding the quality customer service providers

Threat

 The market is becoming dreadfully competitive due to multiple and increase of Rural
community banks , Amanfiman Rural Bank and Upper Amanfi Rural Bank Ltd
 Loans recovery from some customers.
 The safety conditions of mobile bankers on daily bases

IMPRESSION

I was very impressed in how staff from different departments work in order to bring greater
output to the bank. When a staff is absent another member takes over and work even though they
are not from the same department. Also, I was impressed about the banks CEO and Auditors who
came to supervise, their commitment and faithfulness was superb.

26
CHAPTER FIVE

CONCLUSION

The compulsory supervised industrial attachment of the university gives students the opportunity

to apply knowledge in real work, exposing students to work methods not taught in the university

and provide access to products equipment not available in the university as well as assessing

students interest in the occupation he/she plans to undertake, the program should therefore be

maintain and the period extended.

Practical Accounting Training helps students gain information and exposure to real life scenario

which is not enough from the university level education. Industrial training helps to sharpen our

accounting skills and makes us more familiar about the accounting industry. It increases our

chance of getting accounting internship and jobs.

I really desire to have good accounting career, it is very important to be up to date with the

industry and get myself equipped with all the required accounting training. I won’t hesitate to

invest in myself for career development. The little investment I make today in my education and

training will give me maximum return in future.

I will acknowledge that this exercise is much beneficial to the industrial-based attachment. I
benefited a lot in the field of attachment in a way that I managed to apply the theoretical
knowledge learnt at the university into practice through the many activities, tasks, assignment I
was instructed to do. I also improved skills like interpersonal, listening, presentation skills,
acting freely around people, typing skills, accounting theories and practices, recording and more.

27
Also, I got many ideas from permanent employees and other colleagues at the organization.
Finally, the twelve weeks attachment training at Denkyiraman Rural Bank has been successfully
accomplished and this exercise was fun and educative so I therefore encourage the liaisons
department of the university as well as the organizations to continue giving student this great
opportunity always.

RECOMMENDATION

Industrial attachment being part of the requirement of the Bachelor of technology programme is
an invention worth recommending.

This because it exposes the student to a variety of experience that compliments his or her
knowledge obtained in the lecturer hall. Certainly, trainees need exposures and experiences that
will enable them go beyond the knowledge of theories and principles to encompass the
application of those principles to encompass the application of those theories in the real word of
professionalism and proprietorship.

For the benefits of the society which is affiliated to Ghana ARB Apex, Denkyiraman Rural Bank
in particular should embark on securities for loans to reduce loan interest rate and encourage
members on contributing more savings, shares to be a shareholder.

For staff and management, condition of services is still not implemented. Network system
effectiveness is very slow, Securities must be improved, CCT cameras and other digital
equipment must be used for safety reasons, workers bonuses and allowances should be
encouraged.

In all, the industrial attachment is worth wide and my interrelationship at Denkyiraman Rural
Bank was both exposures of the outside world and experience that will help me in the near future

28
and in furtherance of my education. It thought me new things and upgraded my academic
knowledge.

TO THE ORGANIZATION

More opportunities to students to do intern in their organization;

I would also recommend the Organization to continue giving internship placements to as many
students as they can because some miss this experience which is also important requirement of
the Universities due to the fact that they failed to get placements.

Allowances,

The organization should give allowances to interns most especially transport allowances to cater
for transport cost most students stay far from the internship places hence increasing my
expenses. Therefore, the intern recommends the Organization to put that in to action in order to
motivate interns and boost their productivity levels in performing their tasks during the field
attachment.

Serious supervision to the workers and students,

The organization should increase and ensure more supervision over the employees in order to
work effectively and also eliminate workers who relax, work lazily and perform actively after
seeing their supervisors.
