Practice Test 1
Part 1 (page 14)
Narrator: You will hear five short conversations. For each question, choose the correct picture.
Narrator: 2 What time should the boy turn off the oven?
Mum: Sam, I’m going out to do some shopping. Can you put the chicken in the oven in half an hour?
Boy: At 6.30? No problem. When should I take it out?
Mum: You can turn off the oven at 7.25. Wait, actually, I think 7.35 would be better.
Boy: OK. But please call me at 7.30 or I’ll forget.

Narrator: 16 You will hear a girl talking about an electronic dictionary. Why did she buy one?
Girl: Johnny, you’re still using a paper dictionary?
Boy: Yes, I can’t find words in an electronic one.
Girl: That’s because you haven’t learnt to use it properly. It really helps you to learn English, because
you can listen to the pronunciation. That’s why I got mine. It’s also really light, so you can take it
anywhere you want.
Narrator:
17 You will hear two friends talking about after-school clubs. Which club is the girl going to join
this term?
Boy: Have you decided which club to join?
Girl: I heard that the drama club is planning a show, and I’ll be sad not to be in it. But last term I learnt
so much about paintbrush techniques! I don’t want to change activities yet.
Boy: What about learning to code at computer club?
Girl: My dad is going to teach me.
Narrator: 18 You will hear two friends talking about their film project. What is the girl unhappy about?
Boy: We’re nearly finished with our film project, Ella.
Girl: Yes, but if we had more time, we could do a better job. It’s not fair. For a start, finding good
actors was really difficult.
Boy: But it was great your sister could make the costumes.
Girl: We didn’t have much choice! We couldn’t pay a professional dressmaker. Luckily, she did a good
job.
Narrator: 19 You will hear a man telling his friend about a problem. Why is he angry?
There was a big New Year’s Eve party at the pub next door last night. People were celebrating till
really late. They didn’t make too much noise. But, when I went outside this morning, there were
broken bottles everywhere. It was horrible! There used to be a sign saying “Please put rubbish in
bins”, but it fell down.
Narrator:
20 You will hear a woman telling a friend about her trip abroad. What did she do on her last
night?
The trip was wonderful! We had such a good time! And our last night was really special. Adam
wanted to take a boat tour along the coast, but at the hotel we found out that there was going
to be an opera in an old castle that night. Of course, I bought tickets for that right away.
Practice Test 2
Part 1 (page 28)
Narrator: You will hear five short conversations. For each question, choose the correct picture.
Narrator: 16 You will hear a boy talking to his mum. Where did he leave his watch?
Boy: Mum, I can’t find my watch. I thought I left it in the bathroom.
Mum: Sorry, I haven’t seen it. Have you looked in the living room?
Boy: Oh yes, you’re right. I think I put it on the bookcase. Here it is.
Mum: Tim, you should really look after your things more carefully.
Narrator: 17 You will hear two sisters talking about their day. What present did they buy?
Girl 1: Today’s been a fun day shopping.
Girl 2: Yes, it has. Let’s look at what we bought.
Girl 1: OK. So, I bought myself these jeans, and this tie is for Dad for his birthday.
Girl 2: I think he’ll love it, and those jeans will look great with your new blue trainers.
Girl 1: Thanks.
Narrator: 18 You will hear a doctor talking to a boy. What does he want the boy to do?
OK, your leg isn’t broken, but you’ve hurt it. So I’m going to put this bandage on it, and you must
rest it for the next few days. That means you mustn’t play football. This medicine will help with
the pain. So, let’s see … today’s Tuesday. You need to come back next Tuesday and see the nurse.
She’ll look at your leg to check it’s OK.
Narrator: 19 You will hear two friends talking about a museum. Where is the girl going on Saturday evening?
Boy: Are you coming to Jamie’s party on Saturday, Lily?
Girl: This Saturday? I can’t – I’m going to the museum.
Boy: In the evening?
Girl: Yes. One of my photos won first prize in a competition. On Saturday, everyone can see my photos
and I’ll receive the prize.
Boy: Wow! That’s amazing!
Narrator:
20 You will hear an assistant talking to a customer in an airport. What does the customer have to
pay for to check in?
Man: Have you got just one suitcase to check in?
Woman: No, I’ve got this small backpack and my guitar as well.
Man: Well, you can take the backpack with you on the plane. It’s small. But you’ve only paid for one big
piece of luggage.
Woman: Oh. So can I pay now?
Man: Yes, it’s €50.
Practice Test 3
Part 1 (page 42)
Narrator: You will hear five short conversations. For each question, choose the correct picture.
Narrator: 5 What did the characters in the book use to find their way in the rainforest?
Woman: I’ve just finished reading a great book.
Man: What’s it about?
Woman: It’s an adventure story. Three friends decide to hike through the Amazon Rainforest and discover
how dangerous it is.
Man: Did they have a local guide with them?
Woman: No, they didn’t even use a map. They just followed the river.
Boy: Wow! I know the emperor Shah Jahan built it in memory of his wife. Is it as beautiful as it looks in
the pictures?
Girl: It’s even more beautiful!
Boy: And what did you do after that?
Girl: We travelled to Pushkar. It’s a small town next to a lake. People visit the lake because they
believe the water has special powers.
Boy: Where did you stay?
Girl: In a very old but lovely hotel.
Boy: What was the food like?
Girl: Well, in Pushkar people don’t eat fish or meat. So we had a lot of rice and vegetable curry. It was
delicious.
Boy: Did you buy anything?
Girl: Yes. I bought an Indian shirt and trousers in the market. My sister bought some earrings, and
Mum and Dad bought some sweets.
Boy: Did you see any cows in the streets?
Girl: Yes! They were everywhere! They’re very thin because they haven’t got much grass to eat.
Narrator: 16 You will hear a boy talking about a show at his school. What is he going to do?
You must come and see our school show next week. It will be amazing! Mark and Jody have
written a funny play and they’re going to act in it. Mia’s going to sing and play the guitar. She’s
got a great voice! I’m doing a hip-hop dance with Lucy. We’ve practised for weeks. You’ll love it!
Narrator: 17 You will hear two friends talking about restaurants. Where are they going to eat?
Boy: Do you want to eat out tonight?
Girl: I’d love to. Do you want to try the new steak restaurant in Baker Street?
Boy: I don’t think so. It’s too expensive. What about fish and chips at Kitty’s Café? Or we could we go
to a pizzeria.
Girl: I had pizza for lunch, but fish and chips sounds great!
Narrator: 18 You will hear two people discussing a holiday. How will they be travelling?
Man: I’ve never been on this type of holiday before. What should I take with me?
Woman: Your passport is essential because we’ll be sailing to a few countries. Oh, and you may feel
seasick, so pack some medicine. Remember, the price doesn’t include guided tours of the
islands. You’ll need to pay extra for those.
Narrator: 19 You will hear a weather forecast. Where will it be the driest?
Today it will be cloudy everywhere in the UK, with some light rain in the north and west. The
temperature will be about 25 degrees in the south, 19 degrees in the centre and 17 to 18
degrees in the north.
Narrator: 20 You will hear a woman asking for directions. Where does she have to turn left?
Woman: Excuse me. How do I get to Maple Park from here?
Man: Go straight for about two kilometres until you get to the traffic lights. Turn right. Then turn left
after the police station. The park is on the right, opposite the supermarket.
Woman: Thank you very much.
Practice Test 4
Part 1 (page 56)
Narrator: You will hear five short conversations. For each question, choose the correct picture.
Narrator: 16 You will hear a teacher talking to her class. What do the students need to remember?
Remember it’s sports day tomorrow. There will be different races and a teachers-versus-students
football match. Lessons will finish at 2.30 instead of at 3. You don’t need to bring your art bag
tomorrow, but please don’t forget to bring your swimsuit, trainers and a T-shirt.
Narrator:
17 You will hear two friends talking about their tests at school. What test have they got
next week?
Boy: Finally, it’s Friday!
Girl: I know. I’m so glad the science test we did this afternoon is over. Now we need to concentrate
on the maths test. At least it’s on Tuesday, so we’ll be able to study for it over the weekend. The
history test is in two weeks, so we’ve got time to study for that, too.
Narrator: 18 You will hear a boy talking about his day. Where is he at the moment?
Mum: Hi, Dan. How was your day?
Boy: Great! I went swimming at the sports centre and I met John there. We had lunch at the café.
Mum: That’s nice!
Boy: It was! But now I’m going to just sit on the couch and watch a film on my laptop.
Narrator: 19 You will hear a girl talking to her friend about shopping. What did she buy today?
Girl 1: That’s a nice sweater, Victoria. I love the colour. Is it new?
Girl 2: Thanks, it’s actually my sister’s sweater. I went shopping this afternoon to look for winter clothes
and a new coat because there was a sale. But they didn’t have anything in my size! Luckily,
I found this lovely scarf – it was the last one in the shop!
Narrator: 20 You will hear two friends talking about the man’s new flat. Why is he happy?
Woman: Your new flat is great, Rob.
Man: Thanks! I wanted to be near the train station, but the flats were too expensive there.
Woman: So, how close are you to everything in town?
Man: Well, there’s a park across the road, and it’s about a ten-minute walk to the restaurants and shops.
That’s fine because I like jogging more than going shopping!
Practice Test 5
Part 1 (page 70)
Narrator: You will hear five short conversations. For each question, choose the correct picture.
Narrator: 16 You will hear a pilot talking to the passengers. What is the weather like now in London?
Man: Welcome to flight 507 to Heathrow, London. We’re going to fly northwest over Switzerland and
France. Then, across the English Channel to London. There aren’t any clouds today, so you should
have a good view of the mountains over Switzerland. It’s raining in London at the moment, but
the sun will come out in the afternoon. Enjoy your trip.
Narrator:
17 You will hear a friend explaining to Ella how to get to her house. Where does Ella’s friend live?
Girl: Listen, Ella. I’ll explain to you how to get to my house. Take the number 45 bus from Wallender
Street. The bus stop is at the corner opposite the supermarket. Get off the bus at the railway
station. Then cross the road and walk through the square. My house is next to the chemist’s,
across from the square.
Narrator: 18 You will hear Jamil talking. Where did he live when he was a child?
Man: In Jordan. But after I was born, my family moved to Paris. That’s where I grew up.
Woman: So, where did you learn English? You speak perfectly.
Narrator: 19 You will hear a man and a woman talking. Where is the comb?
Man: Have you seen my comb, Lisa? I can’t find it.
Woman: It was in the bathroom on the shelf above the sink yesterday.
Man: Well, it isn’t there now.
Woman: Did you take it into the living room?
Man: Why would I do that?
Woman: Look! Here it is. It’s on the bed under this magazine!
Narrator: 20 You will hear a tourist making plans with a tour guide. What is the final decision?
Woman: Can you take us up to Mount Batur, please? We’d love to climb!
Man: No, sorry, not today. It’s too foggy up there. But I could take you for a walk in Monkey Forest.
Woman: We visited the forest yesterday. What about the rice fields? We haven’t been there yet.
Man: Certainly. I can take you there now.
Narrator: For each question, choose the correct answer. You will hear two students talking about a school
trip. What did each person do?
Girl: Hi, Ray. Why did you miss the school trip on Monday?
Boy: I really wanted to go, but I woke up with a temperature and a really bad headache. So I had to
stay in bed all day.
Girl: Oh, are you feeling better?
Boy: Yes, thanks, Lara. So how was the trip?
Girl: It was fun – but not for Jason! While we were walking along the riverbank, he fell over some
rocks, and his phone dropped into the water. He was really upset!
Boy: I’m sure he was! So what else did you do?
Girl: We walked on a path through the forest. Cathy saw a deer and wanted to take a picture of it,
but it ran off too quickly.
Boy: Oh! Then what did you do?
Girl: We had a picnic under the trees. Pat drew a picture of all of us in the forest. You should see it.
It’s really good!
Boy: And after that?
Girl: We went back to the bus and drove down a narrow mountain road.
Boy: What was the view like, Lara?
Girl: I don’t know. I fell asleep.
Boy: Did anyone take photos?
Girl: Yes, Ian took some amazing pictures. I’ve got them on my phone. I’ll send them to you.
Boy: Thanks.
