Practice Test 1
Part 1 (page 14)
Narrator: You will hear five short conversations. For each question, choose the correct picture.

Narrator: 1 When will the woman’s tablet be ready?

Woman: Can you fix my tablet? The touchscreen is broken.
Man: I can, but it won’t be ready till next Monday.
Woman: That’s 26th of March, isn’t it?
Man: No, it’s the 27th.
Woman: Right. But I’m too busy next week. Is it OK if I collect it on the 29th?
Man: Of course.

Narrator: 2 What time should the boy turn off the oven?
Mum: Sam, I’m going out to do some shopping. Can you put the chicken in the oven in half an hour?
Boy: At 6.30? No problem. When should I take it out?
Mum: You can turn off the oven at 7.25. Wait, actually, I think 7.35 would be better.
Boy: OK. But please call me at 7.30 or I’ll forget.

Narrator: 3 Which flash drive will the girl buy?

Man: How can I help you?
Girl: I need a flash drive.
Man: We’ve got different sizes. Here’s a 16 GB one, but we’ve got bigger ones, too.
Girl: Is 16 GB big enough to store videos?
Man: A 64 GB drive would be big enough, but a 32 GB is probably all right, too.
Girl: I’ll take that one – I don’t think I need 64 GB.

Narrator: 4 What has the boy just found?

Boy: Margie, look what I’ve just found. It was under the sofa.
Girl: Thanks, Jerry, for finding my shoe. Why do we always find things there?!
Boy: Well, that’s where Charlie likes hiding things. On Monday, I found my scarf under the sofa.
And yesterday I couldn’t find his lead. Where was it? Under the sofa!

Narrator: 5 What is the tourist information centre next to?

Man: Hello, I’m looking for the tourist information centre. I was told it was next to the hotel before the
traffic lights. But I can’t find it.
Woman: They’ve moved it. It’s after the school next to the bank, at the zebra crossing.
Man: Thanks.
Woman: Enjoy your holiday!

Part 2 (page 15)

Narrator: You will hear a teacher talking to his students about a new mentoring programme. For each
question, write the correct answer in the gap. Write one word or a number or a date or a time.
Hello everyone. We’re starting a new mentoring programme with Meadhill Primary School,
a new school that will open its doors on 7th September. Our head teacher and theirs have
decided to start a joint reading and maths programme. Students from Meadhill High will give
after-school aid in maths and reading to Meadhill Primary School children. The programme will
be open to all students from our school who are in year 10 and up. Students taking part in the
programme must come to a training day on 3rd September at 8.45. The day will start with some
fun warm-up activities. Teacher trainers from the local teachers college will join us at 10. The
training day will finish at 3.30 in the afternoon. If you want to take part, tomorrow morning you
will find the forms outside the library. If you have more questions about the programme, you
can email Mrs Jameson – that’s [email protected].

Part 3 (page 16)

Narrator: You will hear two friends talking about the environment. For each question, choose the correct
answer.
Boy: Rachel, are you coming to the beach clean-up on Saturday?
Girl: I don’t know. The last one was fun, but after a week there was rubbish everywhere again.
Boy: That’s why we need more people to help.
Girl: Have you put up posters at school?
Boy: I wanted to put some up by the music department, but not many students go there. So I’ve put
one up outside, by the main gate.
Girl: Make sure there’s a poster in each classroom, too.
Boy: You’re right. By the way, my sister is bringing some friends.
Girl: Is your sister an environmentalist, too?
Boy: Well, sometimes she recycles, but she always forgets to turn off the lights when she leaves the
room.
Girl: My mum promised to get recycling bins for plastic. But then she said the kitchen wasn’t big
enough. It made me angry.
Boy: So your family doesn’t recycle.
Girl: No! I collect our plastic and take it to the bin by the roundabout.
Boy: There’s a closer one by the stop sign on Pearl Street.
Girl: That’s for paper.

Part 4 (page 17)

Narrator: You will hear five short conversations. For each question, choose the correct answer.

Narrator: 16 You will hear a girl talking about an electronic dictionary. Why did she buy one?
Girl: Johnny, you’re still using a paper dictionary?
Boy: Yes, I can’t find words in an electronic one.
Girl: That’s because you haven’t learnt to use it properly. It really helps you to learn English, because
you can listen to the pronunciation. That’s why I got mine. It’s also really light, so you can take it
anywhere you want.

Practice Test 1: Listening Scripts

Narrator:
17 You will hear two friends talking about after-school clubs. Which club is the girl going to join
this term?
Boy: Have you decided which club to join?
Girl: I heard that the drama club is planning a show, and I’ll be sad not to be in it. But last term I learnt
so much about paintbrush techniques! I don’t want to change activities yet.
Boy: What about learning to code at computer club?
Girl: My dad is going to teach me.

Narrator: 18 You will hear two friends talking about their film project. What is the girl unhappy about?
Boy: We’re nearly finished with our film project, Ella.
Girl: Yes, but if we had more time, we could do a better job. It’s not fair. For a start, finding good
actors was really difficult.
Boy: But it was great your sister could make the costumes.
Girl: We didn’t have much choice! We couldn’t pay a professional dressmaker. Luckily, she did a good
job.

Narrator: 19 You will hear a man telling his friend about a problem. Why is he angry?
There was a big New Year’s Eve party at the pub next door last night. People were celebrating till
really late. They didn’t make too much noise. But, when I went outside this morning, there were
broken bottles everywhere. It was horrible! There used to be a sign saying “Please put rubbish in
bins”, but it fell down.

Narrator:
20 You will hear a woman telling a friend about her trip abroad. What did she do on her last
night?
The trip was wonderful! We had such a good time! And our last night was really special. Adam
wanted to take a boat tour along the coast, but at the hotel we found out that there was going
to be an opera in an old castle that night. Of course, I bought tickets for that right away.

Part 5 (page 18)

Narrator: For each question, choose the correct answer. You will hear a boy talking to his mum about
moving to a new flat. Who is getting their appliances?
Boy: Mum, are we taking our old appliances when we move to the new flat?
Mum: No. It comes with new appliances.
Boy: Then, can we give our old washing machine and fridge to my sports club?
Mum: No, we can’t. I’ve already promised the washing machine to your aunt Sarah and the fridge to
your cousin Peter.
Boy: Why does Peter need a fridge?
Mum: He’s moving with friends into a new flat. Oh, and his sister Betty is taking the microwave oven.
Boy: What about the vacuum cleaner? Is there one in the flat?
Mum: No, there isn’t, so I’m taking it with us of course.
Boy: Oh, OK. Can I keep my old television?
Mum: I’m afraid not. Uncle Dave asked me to give it your cousin Bert.
Boy: Is there central heating in the new flat?

Woman: Could I have the chocolate cake, please? And I’d like a cup of coffee, too.
Waiter: Sorry, but there isn’t any chocolate cake left. There’s chocolate ice cream though.
Woman: OK, I’ll have that, please.

Narrator: 2 Where is Alex going to stay?

Boy: I’m going to study French at a summer school in France.
Girl: Really? Wow! Are you going to stay in a hotel?
Boy: No, I’m living with a family in their house. So I’ll sleep and eat there, and I’ll go to school during
the day.
Girl: That sounds great!

Narrator: 3 What will the temperature be tomorrow?

Girl: Hi, Mum! I’m calling to let you know we’ve arrived.

Mum: Wow! Put lots of sunscreen on – and a hat.

Narrator: 4 What time did the concert start?

Girl 1: How was the concert last night?
Girl 2: It was great, but I’m tired today.
Girl 1: What time did it end?
Girl 2: It finished at 11 pm because it started an hour late. The tickets said half past eight, but we
waited for an hour for the concert to begin.

the coach at 1 o’clock. There are lots of coaches in the car park, so remember the name of our
coach – Milton – M–I–L–T–O–N. After lunch, we’re going to walk to the castle – it’s about three
kilometres from here. I’ll show you some interesting points along the way. You don’t need to
bring your backpacks with you, but bring a bottle of water because it’s hot today. After the tour
of the castle and its beautiful gardens, we’ll come back to the coach at about 4 o’clock, and we
should be back home by 6. Good! Now, have your lunch and I’ll see you in an hour.

online and I can’t.
Boy: How long have you had this laptop?
Woman: Oh, not long – less than 10 years.
Boy: Ten years?! That’s a very long time, Gran. Perhaps you should buy a new one.
Woman: Hmm, I’d prefer not to spend too much money – they’re so expensive.
Boy: You could go to the computer shop in town. I saw an advert in today’s newspaper – there are
laptops on sale for £200.
Woman: OK. Can you come with me?
Boy: Sure. What day would you like to go?
Woman: Well, I can’t go on Thursday because I’ve got a dentist’s appointment, but I could go on Friday
afternoon or Saturday morning.
Boy: How about Saturday morning?
Woman: OK. I’ll meet you in front of the post office.
Boy: No, that isn’t near the computer shop. I’ll meet you outside Alice’s Café.
Woman: Is that opposite the bookshop?

the pain. So, let’s see … today’s Tuesday. You need to come back next Tuesday and see the nurse.
She’ll look at your leg to check it’s OK.

He paints the sets.
Girl: That sounds interesting. According to my mum, the manager of the theatre isn’t very nice.

well?
Girl: Your friend Hugo? No, what does he do?

a practice. I’ve added an extra day to our routine. As of next week, we’re meeting on Mondays,
Tuesdays and Thursdays. Jackie, I know you usually have swimming lessons on Tuesdays, but
please try to be here for practice. It’s really important! Before each practice, you’re going to run

has a built-in bookcase.
Man: Oh, that’s nice! Is the kitchen next to the dining room?
Woman: Yes. It’s a bit small, but it’s got a big window above the sink. The owners are leaving their electric

Girl: Oh, that’s a shame. So, when are you leaving?
Boy: Tomorrow morning at nine.
Girl: Why are you leaving so late?
Boy: Well, we’ll be ready earlier, but there’s always so much traffic between 7.30 and 8.30. We want to
avoid that.
Girl: Have you got everything you need?
Boy: I think so. I’ve packed my raincoat since it might rain later tomorrow. It was really windy last
night, but hopefully, it will be sunny when we arrive.
Girl: I hope so! I know you wanted to have a barbecue.
Boy: Well, there’s a place to have a barbecue even if the weather is bad. I prefer that than going to
a restaurant. Oh, I just remembered. I’ve got to go to the supermarket. Jamie has bought some
sausages and chicken, but I prefer burgers. Would you like to come with me?
Girl: Sure!

Part 4 (page 59)

Narrator: You will hear five short conversations. For each question, choose the correct answer.

Narrator: 16 You will hear a teacher talking to her class. What do the students need to remember?
Remember it’s sports day tomorrow. There will be different races and a teachers-versus-students
football match. Lessons will finish at 2.30 instead of at 3. You don’t need to bring your art bag
tomorrow, but please don’t forget to bring your swimsuit, trainers and a T-shirt.

Narrator:
17 You will hear two friends talking about their tests at school. What test have they got
next week?
Boy: Finally, it’s Friday!
Girl: I know. I’m so glad the science test we did this afternoon is over. Now we need to concentrate
on the maths test. At least it’s on Tuesday, so we’ll be able to study for it over the weekend. The
history test is in two weeks, so we’ve got time to study for that, too.

Narrator: 18 You will hear a boy talking about his day. Where is he at the moment?
Mum: Hi, Dan. How was your day?
Boy: Great! I went swimming at the sports centre and I met John there. We had lunch at the café.
Mum: That’s nice!
Boy: It was! But now I’m going to just sit on the couch and watch a film on my laptop.

Narrator: 19 You will hear a girl talking to her friend about shopping. What did she buy today?
Girl 1: That’s a nice sweater, Victoria. I love the colour. Is it new?
Girl 2: Thanks, it’s actually my sister’s sweater. I went shopping this afternoon to look for winter clothes
and a new coat because there was a sale. But they didn’t have anything in my size! Luckily,
I found this lovely scarf – it was the last one in the shop!

Narrator: 20 You will hear two friends talking about the man’s new flat. Why is he happy?
Woman: Your new flat is great, Rob.
Man: Thanks! I wanted to be near the train station, but the flats were too expensive there.
Woman: So, how close are you to everything in town?
Man: Well, there’s a park across the road, and it’s about a ten-minute walk to the restaurants and shops.
That’s fine because I like jogging more than going shopping!

Girl 1: Emma! Hi! What are you doing? I’m at the swimming pool. Do you want to come?

catch up. I’m not leaving my room today! What’s Matt doing? He loves swimming.
Girl 1: He does, but he goes surfing every Saturday. He prefers swimming in the sea, anyway.
Girl 2: Oh, what about Amy?
Girl 1: Well, she’s just sent me a message. She fell off her bike on the way to the supermarket, and she
thinks she’s broken her arm. She’s seeing a doctor now.
Girl 2: Oh, no! Poor Amy. Is Harry with her?
Girl 1: No, he’s at his new job in a restaurant. He was working at the bookshop, but he didn’t really enjoy
it.
Girl 2: He definitely likes food more than books!
Girl 1: Oh, I’ve just got a message from Natalie. She’s in her art class now, but she’s going to meet me in
half an hour. Good luck with your schoolwork!
Girl 2: Thanks, have fun!

Narrator: You will hear a tour guide talking to the members of his group. For each question, write the
correct answer in the gap. Write one word or a number or a date or a time.
Good morning on this beautiful sunny day! I’m Billy Floyd, that’s F-L-O-Y-D, and you’ll be visiting
the beautiful town of Windstorm with me today. It’s going to be another warm day, so make sure
you take a large bottle of water with you. In the morning, we will visit the food market in the
square. It opens at 7.00 in the morning. We’ll try to be there early, so you can buy something to
eat and have a cup of coffee. At 10.00, we’ll go to the botanical garden. There are many beautiful
plants and flowers which I am sure you’ll enjoy seeing. We’ll have lunch at noon after our visit
to the botanical garden. After lunch, we’ll go to the beach. There’s usually a lot of traffic on the
roads going to the beach on Saturdays. And don’t forget – this evening, we’re going to the rock
music festival. Tickets cost £15. Don’t miss it!

Boy: I’m going to work in my dad and uncle’s garage. They’re mechanics.
Girl: Can you repair cars?
Boy: I’ve learnt a lot, so I often help them.
Girl: I don’t know anything about cars, and my dad can’t even change a tyre!
Boy: But your dad’s an amazing photographer. I’ve seen his pictures in magazines.
Girl: Yes, he’s really good. Now, he’s working on a TV documentary.
Boy: Really? What’s it about?
Girl: Wild animals in the Farne Islands.
Boy: Your family are very talented. Your mum’s an artist, isn’t she?
Girl: Yes. Her paintings are on all the walls in our house.
Boy: What does she paint?
Girl: Mostly city life – people and places around the city.
Boy: My mother doesn’t paint, but she works in an art gallery. Here, I’ll give you her phone number.
Maybe your mum can show her paintings in the gallery.
Girl: Wow! That would be great!

Man: Welcome to flight 507 to Heathrow, London. We’re going to fly northwest over Switzerland and
France. Then, across the English Channel to London. There aren’t any clouds today, so you should
have a good view of the mountains over Switzerland. It’s raining in London at the moment, but
the sun will come out in the afternoon. Enjoy your trip.

Narrator:
17 You will hear a friend explaining to Ella how to get to her house. Where does Ella’s friend live?

Woman: It was in the bathroom on the shelf above the sink yesterday.

Woman: Look! Here it is. It’s on the bed under this magazine!

Narrator: 20 You will hear a tourist making plans with a tour guide. What is the final decision?

Man: Certainly. I can take you there now.

trip. What did each person do?
Girl: Hi, Ray. Why did you miss the school trip on Monday?
Boy: I really wanted to go, but I woke up with a temperature and a really bad headache. So I had to
stay in bed all day.
Girl: Oh, are you feeling better?
Boy: Yes, thanks, Lara. So how was the trip?
Girl: It was fun – but not for Jason! While we were walking along the riverbank, he fell over some
rocks, and his phone dropped into the water. He was really upset!
Boy: I’m sure he was! So what else did you do?
Girl: We walked on a path through the forest. Cathy saw a deer and wanted to take a picture of it,
but it ran off too quickly.
Boy: Oh! Then what did you do?
Girl: We had a picnic under the trees. Pat drew a picture of all of us in the forest. You should see it.
It’s really good!
Boy: And after that?
Girl: We went back to the bus and drove down a narrow mountain road.
Boy: What was the view like, Lara?
Girl: I don’t know. I fell asleep.
Boy: Did anyone take photos?
Girl: Yes, Ian took some amazing pictures. I’ve got them on my phone. I’ll send them to you.
Boy: Thanks.
