LIGHTNING PROTECTION
The installation of a lightning protection system designed and installed in accordance with the standards
minimizes the consequences of lightning as much as possible. On the other hand, to keep the system in
perfect condition over time, it will be necessary to carry out periodic reviews and maintenance.
There are different reasons for installing a lightning protection system, but they could be reduced to two
fundamentally:
1. Having a lightning protection system is the best option to protect people, animals, structures, machinery
and facilities against this natural phenomenon.
2. To comply with the norms that regulate the installation of these systems. According to these standards,
in some cases the installation will be mandatory, necssary or recommended. To determine this question,
the calculation of the risk index must be performed. Different factors are taken into account in this
calculation, but basically two are taken into account; the probability of impact and the consequences
derived from it. Among the structures in which installation of a lightning protection system will be
necessary are:
• Buildings or open areas with public attendance.
• High-rise buildings.
• Constructions or tanks in which toxic, radioactive, flammable or explosive substances are handled
or contain and ATEX areas.
• Buildings containing especially vulnerable or valuable equipment or documents.
• In general, structures used for commercial, industrial, agricultural, administrative or residential
purposes.
In addition, it should be borne in mind that insurers recommend the installation and maintenance of these
protection systems to be able to adjust the amounts of the insurance, since in this way understand that the
user is using the appropiate means to protect himself from lightning and its effects.
E A R LY S T R E A M E R E M I S S I O N
With this increase of potential, two things happen at the same time; the first is that a downwards stream
is created from the clouds to the ground, and the second is that an upward artificial stream is created by
lightning rod. This ascending stream intercepts the descending one, guiding the electric discharge through
the lightning rod and conducts it to the ground safely.
The time that the upward stream of an ESE lightning rod forward to a stream created by any passive element,
such as a Franklin rod, is what determines the radius of protection. This is what os known as advance time in
priming (∆t). Therefore, there are different ESE models with different advance times depending on the meters
of protection needed in each case.

Guarantees the protection radius.
AS a result of the research carried out and the R&D projects developed, the ADVANCE+ lightning rod
incorporates the following new technologies:
The ESE ADVANCE+ guarantees the operation of its priming device and its effectiveness in protection in
extreme rain conditions thanks to the “ISOLATED RAIN” system.
This system guarantees total isolation in adverse atmospheric conditions provided by the ELECTRODE
IONIZATION VAULT. This vault prevents the rain from putting the metal body of the lightning rod (at
atmospheric potential) in electrical contact with the metal shaft (at ground potential).
When an ESE does not have this insulation guarantee and adverse atmospheric conditions occur, such
as heavy rain, electrodes with different potentials can come into contact and cause a short circuit in the
ignition device that prevents the lightning rod from offering the necessary safety, drastically reducing
your radius of protection.
> INSTALLATION
The installation of the ESE ADVANCE+ must be carried out of following the indications of the Technical

The Franklin rod is a device designed to protect buildings, structures and people against the dangerous effects of lightning. It was invented
by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century and has been widely used ever since to prevent damage from lightning strikes from storms.
The Frranklin rod consists of several esential parts. The main piece is a conductive metal rod, generally made of cooper or stainless steel
alloys, which is installed in the highest part of the building or structure to be protected. The rod rises above the highest point of the ciling,
allowing it to draw lightning to itself.
As a thunderstorm approaches, the electric and magnetic fields generated by atmospheric charges cause the pointed end of the lightning
rod to ionize the surrounding air. This ionization forms a low-resistance path to earth for the electrical current from lightning, preventing
it from damaging the structure it protects.
Lightning current travels through the conductor to a down conductor, which in turn is connected to a network of conductors buried in the
ground, known as a grounding system. This system dissipates lightning energy safely into the ground, preventing it from damaging the
buildings or starting fires.
It is essential to note that the Franklin rod does not prevent lightning strikes, but rather provides a controlled path for the current to flow
to earth. Additionally, multiple arresters can be installed on large buildings or large areas to improve lightning protection.
Over the years, Franklin rod have proven to be highly effective in protecting against lightning, greatly reducing structural damage and risks
to people. However proper design ans intallation are essential to ensure proper operation. Therefore, it is recommended that a qualified
proffesional perform the installation ad periodic maintenance of the system to ensure optimal protection against the dangers of electrical
storms.

SPARK GAP
Lightning protection regulations indicate that each lightning rod must be have its own ground connection and independently must have a
velue below 10 ohms. On the other hand, they also recommend linking the lightning rod ground connections to other ground connections
to avoid potential differences.
Direct connections can be made, but it is always better to do it with spark gaps for different reasons:
• The facilitate that the main path of the lightning current is through the grounding of the lightning rod.
• It maintains the different ground connections at the same potential, avoiding dangerous spark jumps through unwanted areas, but
only at the moment of discharge, because in normal state it keeps them separated.
• They prevent some sensitive systems or equipment from being influenced by these direct connections.
• They protect against corrosion that can occur in some cases by directly connecting different ground connections.
Spark gaps are also used to protect antennas, metal structures, tanks, etc.

> CONNECTION
The measurement must always be made between 2 existing potentials in all lightning rods with priming
devices (ESE):
• ATMOSPHERIC POTENTIAL (tip and body)
• EARTH POTENTIAL* (axis)
*If the measurement is made with the lightning rod installed, the connection to ground potential can be made
on the mast or the downpipe, since both elements would be attached to the axis of the lightning rod.
> SAFETY
WARNING
The AS TESTER PRO lightning rod tester only guarantees the proper functioning of the priming device but not the physical integrity
of the lightning rod, so a positive result in a lightning rodd that has suffered physical damage does not mean that it maintains
its condition. Level of coverage, since this does not depend only on the priming device, but also on physycal parameters, so to
guarantee the level of coverage, a visual inspection of the physical integrity of the lightning rod is also required.
MEASUREMENT DEVICES
ADT COUNTER
> THE MOST VERSATILE, COMPLETE AND EASY TO INSTALL LIGHTNING METER
The ADT Counter counts and records the direct strikes and surges of a lightning protection system.
It is a device thet does not intervene in the operation of the protection system, but it is undoubtedly a very important element, because it
is the only way of knowing that the system has suffered a lightning strike and that a revision of the system must be carried out to verify
that everything is in correct condition and we continue to be protected.
Due to its design and its materials, it is robust, reliable and autonomous. It does not need external power supply and is compatible with
any lightning rod.

> LOCATION
The device must be located at any point on the downspout between the protection tube and the mast. It is inserted in the downpipe with
less ohmic resistance or, failing that, in the straightest and most direct to ground.

It is necessary to install surge protection devices at least in the main electric switchboards of facilities equiped with lightning ross,
especially in those installations closest to the lightning rod.
In the case of high resistivity of the terrain, the need for installing overvoltage protection is even more crucial. The grater earth potential
differences, the higher energetic impact of overvoltages will be.
• Lack of insulation: a poor isolated insulation will be reached by atmospheric discharges when lightning strikes the lightning rod.
This devices redirect energy to the ground.
• Electromagnetic fields: as a result of lightning strikes, strong currents are generated. As a result magnetic fields are induced in
every conductor nearby, such as electric, data and coaxial cables.
When lightning strikes the earth, currents may be induced in long-distance cables used for electric lines especially in large-scale facilities.
In order to avoid the loads of the installation to be damaged, surge protective devices must be installed at both ends of cables used for
the loads connection.
The higher the resistivity of the terrain, the grater the voltage gradients are and the need to protect both ends of the cable.
• Inductions: when a lightning strikes the earth, an electrical potential funnel is generated and therefore electrical potential
differences appear in the terrain. Consequently, if an electric, coaxial or data cable runs between two different potential curves,
a current will be induced thereon and affect the loads fed by this cable.
The transient overvoltages transmitted by the distribution networks have their origin the electrical distributors, line faults and mainly in
the atmospheric discharges that reach high-voltage lines.
Since the discharge lamps, variable speed drives, connection and disconnection of generators cause surges and short-term currents with
high-peak values, transient surges caused by network users and their surroundings can not be obviated.
In order to reduce incidences and avoid users, devices and facilities themeselves to be damaged, it is neccessary to install the properly
sorge protective devices for this kind of installations, at least in the main electrical switchboard and those with a high risk of suffering
the consequences of overvoltages.
• Induced atmospheric discharges on High-Voltage lines: an atmospheric discharge is the most damaging problem that you can
find in an installation. As a High-Voltage power line is the most likely place for a lightning to strike, most of the time it will reach
the installation through the electrical supply.
• Overvoltages originated in the electrical network: manoeuvres such as the switching of electric substation in electrical network
may cause micro-interruptions which are associated to transient voltage peaks that will be transmitted thrughout the whole
electrical network. As a result, the power supply of users facilities will be affected. Sometimes the value of voltage supplied by
electricity companies is higher that the maximum supported by electronic devices and consequently these are affected.
• The influence of power liads over electronics: the start or stop of engines and generators, the variable speed drives, etc.,
may produce overvoltages in the electronic devices. According to the magnitude of the overvoltage, electronic devices of the
installation may be damaged gradually or quickly.

SPUs have been conceived to ensure the protection of the installations against overvoltagesm either atmospheric and industrial origin,
MF/AM harmonics and peaks associated with micro-interruptions. Optionally, the electrical installation will be protected against surges,
power interruptions and phase asymetry effects by adding a PTR4 set. This set is time and voltage programmable.
Our protection systems have been designed to protect every kind of electrical and electronic installations of any power, especially those
which have sensitive electronic devices. By installing a SPU system you are avoiding installations to be affected by: surges, permanent
overvoltages, micro-interrumptions, harmonics, undervoltages, phase asymmetry and electromagnetic compatibility.
Since not all installations are alike and they need to be protected effectively, it is necessary to adapt to their features as well as our
customers demands. In MD we offer the possibility to modify the performances of our products to siut their needs. Therefore, any device
developed by MD can be:
• Set to special supply voltages: 500 V, 690 V, etc.
• Modify the IP rating in installations that require it.
• Increase the capacity of energy dissipation in installations bound to very energetic discharges.
• Increase the frequency filtering capacity.
• Adapt them to any network tipology: biphasic, three-phase lines without neutral, IT, TT, etc.
• Incorporate acoustic alarms.
SELF-COMPSUMPTION
The SPF series equipment is specially designed for the protection of solar panel installations for self-
consumption that are connected to:
This series of protectors for photovoltaic systems are intended to protect against overcurrents and
overvoltages caused by lightning strikes in the continuous part of direct current photovoltaic energy
generating installations of up to 1000Vdc.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE
SPVE panels are specially designed to protect vehicle charging stations as specified in ITC-
BT-52.
These panels protect the vehicle charging station against short circuits, ground faults and
overvoltages.
The protection against permanent overvoltages complies with the POP 50:550 regulation,
protecting the installation against voltages greater than 275 V.
The protection against transient overvoltages will protect the loads against voltage peaks of
atmospheric origin, as well as the transients associated with the maneuvers carried out on
the electrical network.
Options: They can also be supplied with lock, Schuko base, differentials with automatic
reconnection, polycarbonate casing and energy meter.
