OSCILATING ELECTRIC and MAGNETIC FIELDS- have perpendicular directions to
which the waves move
ELCTROMAGNETIC RADIATION - other term for electromagnetic waves
OSCIALLATE - means to change regularly in strength and direction
ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM- the entire range of frequencies is called
WAVES- are similar in that they all move at the speed of light and consist of
moving electrics and magnetic waves
FREQUENCY- the wave produced is the number of complete vibrations per second
of the field at a point along the path of the passing waves
WAVELENGTH- an electromagnetic wave that depends on its frequency and speed
BAND- each type of wave occupies a particular range of wavelengths is known as
HEAT / THERMAL RADIATION – infrared waves are also called as
LIGHT WAVES – are caused by the motion of electrons in atom
PHOTON – a particle representing a quantum of light or other electromagnetic
radiation
RADIO WAVES – have photons with the lowest energy
- Have the longest wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum
RADIO FREQUENCY – is a rate of oscillation in the range of about 3kHz to 300 GHz
FREQUENCY MODULATION (FM)- is often poor in localities
AMPLITUDE MODULATION (AM)- come in louder and clear
MICROWAVES – are basically extremely high-frequency radio waves
MICROWAVE RADIATION – is also use in electron paramagnetic resonance
spectroscopy
INFRARED – is the EM radiation with a wavelength longer than a visible light
NEAR-INFRARED LIGHT- is the closest wavelength to visible light
FAR INFRARED - is closer to the microwave region of the EM spectrum
SIR WILLIAM HERSCHEL – discovered the existence of infrared by passing sunlight
through prism in 1800
THERMOGRAPHY OR PYROMETRY – used to remotely determine the temperature
of objects
VISIBLE LIGHT – is the portion of EM radiation that is visible to the human eye
- Are given off by anything that is hot to glow
RED – has the longest wavelength
VIOLET – has the shortest wavelength
WHITE – when all the waves are seen together
ULTRAVIOLET – is EM radiation with a wavelength shorter than the visible light
ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION – is produced by high temperature surfaces, such as the
sun
X-RAYS – are high energy waves that have great penetrating power and are used
extensively in medical applications
COMPUTER-ASSISTED TOMOGRAPHY – is a technique to which a section of the
human body can be imaged using X-RAYS device
GAMMA RAYS- are generated by radioactive atoms and in nuclear explosions, and
are used in medical applications.
- Are more penetrating than x-rays
GAMMA KNIFE SURGERY – a procedure where multiple concentrated beams of
gamma rays are concentrated at the growth in order to kill cancerous cells
AM RADIO WAVES- readily bends around buildings and other objects
FM RADIO WAVES- have shorter wavelengths when compared to the wavelengths
of some objects that might obstruct them
OSCILLATING CHARGES- where the transmission and reception of radio waves are
dependent
