Beliefs, Customs, Clothing and Food


Merida is one of the most beautiful states in Venezuela for its wonderful
landscapes and mountains. This city is a great place to visit and is well
known for its excellent tourist sites and cool weather. Mérida is one of the
oldest cities in the country, therefore it is worth knowing about the traditions
of Mérida..

The inhabitants of the state honor a diversity of patron saints. As for the diversity of
rituals whose beliefs are embodied in their town, they hold festivals in a religious sense
with songs, food, representative decorations and liquor.

Parties and celebrations


There is a diversity of celebrations in the state of Mérida, among which the inhabitants
carry out religious, musical and decorative activities.

Festival of the Virgin of Candelaria


The purpose of this celebration is to unite the community and families to honor Mary as
the woman who prays deeply for God.

Celebration "Child of the Blade"


The boy with the blade is a representation of a neonate, that is, a newborn that is located
lying on a tombstone. Religiously the "Child of the blade" is made up of attractive
motifs for the person who believes in Catholic religions, celebrated every January 28.

Feast of Saint Benedict


It is a traditional festival that takes place in the town of Mucuchíes on December 29
with the devotees of the villages of the town of Mucuchíes, where they march to
celebrate the goodness of the saint and thus summon the parishioners to a joyous
gathering.

Customs of MeridaAmong the typical customs they are related to


Christ's nativity festivities such as "the paraduras", "the theft of the child", "the
manger" in which they are kept alive every year by the participation of the
inhabitants.

Clothing of the Merideños

The traditional clothing of the Merideños was characterized by having two very well
defined types, the first is the clothing used for daily work and the second is called the
Sunday suit, used to go to mass or on special occasions.

The man's suit, usually the pants and the shirt, are of the same color and espadrilles
were used as shoes. While in women's clothing it was made up of two essential parts,
the jacket and the petticoat, at first they were unicolor, but as time went by, fashions
were imposed when fabrics from other regions of the world began to be imported.

Foods

The Mérida state has delicious representative dishes that vary depending on each
town. Among the typical and traditional dishes, sweets and drinks of this wonderful
state you can find:

Typical dishes
There is a wide variety of delicious dishes, among the most common:

• Pizca Andina: It is a delicious common breakfast dish similar to the Peruvian


chupe, it is prepared with chicken broth, potatoes, milk, egg and green seasonings
such as chives, coriander.

• Arepa Andina: This delicious traditional arepa from the state of Mérida differs
from the usual arepa throughout the country since it is prepared with leavening or all-
purpose wheat flour, adding a little baking soda.

• Mondongo: It is a delicious soup made with pig's legs, beef belly, legumes and
finely chopped vegetables.

• Pastries: They are prepared with wheat flour dough, filled with stew made from
chicken, cheese, meat, trout and mushrooms.
• Trout: You can prepare this delicious dish enriched with vitamins and minerals in
different ways or to your liking, for example; with garlic, minced or stuffed.

• Hallaca Andina: This food is prepared in the December holidays, with cornmeal,
beef, pork, chicken, bacon, chicken, chickpeas, capers, olives, seasonings such as
garlic, onion, sweet pepper, paprika, chives with banana leaves usually fired.

Meridian sweets and desserts


• Jams: There is a wide variety of artisans who make guava, paprika, blackberry and
strawberry jams.

• Polished sweets: Exquisite milk-based delicacy in the shape of fruit, bathed in color
and covered with sparkling granita sugar.

• Figs: They are prepared in syrup, then they can be filled with arequipe.

• Banana and guava sandwiches: Prepared with bananas or ripe guavas and sugar.

• Wrapped Bananas: These are generally prepared during Holy Week, they are
prepared with cooked ripe bananas dough, filled with grated white cheese, cinnamon
and sugar, then fried in abundant oil.Drinks

• Chicha Andina: It is one of the main typical drinks of the Mérida state, it is
prepared with corn, it is creamy, delicious, nutritious, you will love to enjoy it and it
will satisfy your palate.

• Calentao: It is a common hot drink among the inhabitants to minimize the cold and
stay active at work.

• Blackberry Wine: Made with blackberries from Castilla.

• Levantón Andino: Aphrodisiac drink, traditional in the Pueblos del Páramo. Its
ingredients are: Quail Eggs, Fish Roes, Ox Eye, Strawberries, Brandy, Red Wine,
Milk, among others.

• Mistela: It is a drink that is given to women in labor during their quarantine to keep
their body warm and thus avoid shock.

• Donkey Milk or Andean Ponche: Traditional drink, it is considered the ancestor of


Cream Ponche, it is prepared with eggs, callejonero miche, brandy or rum, condensed
milk and then mixed in a blender until a thick liquid is obtained.
