Ruby Bridges was born in Tylertown, Mississippi


on September 8, 1954. She moved to New
Orleans at the age of two. In kindergarten, she
took a test to see if she could attend an all-white
school. She was the eldest of 5 children.

WAS A VERY BIG DEAL. SHE WAS THE
FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN GIRL TO
ATTEND AN ALL-WHITE SCHOOL. SHE
ATTENDED WILLIAM FRANTZ
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR BOTH
ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOL. SHE
DID NOT ATTEND COLLEGE.

She became a travel agent. She also began working as a parent liaison for the
grade school she attended. Today she is a civil rights activist and
provides spechees on behalf of African-Americans.
