07. After participating in the activity of the detector and the liar, please use your own
words to describe the development of the activity. Were you good at playing the
role of a liar? Why or why not? Were you good at playing the role of a detector?
Why or why not? After participating in this activity, how did you feel?
The development
The class is divided into two groups, one is detector, and the other is liar. When
the game starts, the detector needs to ask liar, ‘’Do you have any coins in your
hand ?’’ The liar can choose to cheat or answer him honestly, while the detector
has to judge whether the liar is telling the truth or lies. If the detector believes the
liar, say ‘’I believe you.’’ If not, say ‘’I don’t believe you.’’
Playing a role of liar
Being a liar is hard for me, but I’m good at it. Due to I have to grab the paper,
pencil, and coin in my hand, I am afraid of the detector will expose my tricks.
Fortunately, there are only two people see through my mind. Besides, I laugh
easily if I laugh, everyone will know I’m lying, so I will have a small talk with
other person first, usually they will laugh, and when they relax, I start asking the
questions.
Playing a role of detector
Being a detector is easiler than being a liar, also I’m good at it. First, when I am
asking the question, I look at the other’s eyes, because someone said that eyes
can reveal your mind. Second, I shake the other’s hand, actually, I thought it will
work, but everyone grabs the coin tightly, so this method doesn’t work. Third,
because I often guess wrong, then I will choose the opposite of my answer.
Luckily, I only guessed one wrong.
Feeling
This game is interesting and educational. I enjoy the game every time, admiring
teacher who always come up with fascinating games and using negotiation skills.
This time the game is the best because there is no bonus system, as long as it can
be added, I will play badly.
08. What was the greatest lie you have ever told? Why did you lie? What was the
result of your lying? Please share your story in details. Reflect on this
experience, how did you feel?
One time, my friends asked me out to go to karaoke, I gladly said yes, but the
premise was that I had to ask my parents first. However, I had foreseen that they
would definitely not agree, because they felt that place is dirty, messy, and
people are always smoking there, they don’t want me to go there. Therefore, my
friends started to help me think of a reason, and finally came up with a good
reason, that is, I have to tell my parents that I am going to the library to study
tomorrow. Because I often go to the library, they would never be suspicious.
Although I’ve thought of excuses, it’s still hard to say it out. I plucked up lots of
courage and told my mother, she didn’t doubt me. After speaking, I was a little
happy but also a little guilty. I told myself, ‘’ Sorry, Mom, I had no choice, I
promise you I would get a good grade on exam.’’
09. What was the greatest lie you have ever encountered in your life? How did you
find out that you had been lied to? How did you feel when you found that you
had been lied to?
This story happened in my third grade of elementary school. One day, my family
and I went to the hypermarket. Suddenly, my brother and I saw the Wii on the
display, we rushed over excitedly because there is a sign next to it that says you
can try it out. After playing, I asked my father whether I could buy this. My dad
said if I get the top three in the midterm exam this time, he will buy it. My dad is
sneaky, he would say that is because my grades always ranked in the middle
place. However, this time I tried my best to study. Finally, I got third place, the
result shocked me so much, my teacher was proud of me, I even couldn’t believe
it myself. But my dad didn’t buy it, he broke his word. I felt sad, angry, and
betrayed, since then, I don’t trust him anymore.
10. Describe an ethical challenge you have encountered in your life. It could be a
very trivial or significant incident to you. You could be the offender or the victim
in the ethical challenge. What was the ethical dilemma you or the other party was
facing?
Just happened a few months ago, my friends and I took the bus from 勤美 to PU,
and because 勤美 is a big station, it was crowded with people. We quickly found
a seat and sat down. Then I started playing with my phone. Suddenly, there was
an old woman who kept pushing me, also putting his body weight on me, but no
one pushed at her. It annoys me a lot, because I felt like she wanted me to yield
my seat, but I'm still an hour away from my destination, she's old but I'm very
tired. However, in the end, I yielded my seat to her. This is a Personalistic Ethics.
I can’t get over my morale standard.
11. Review the ethical dilemma you just mentioned from the perspectives of the four
different ethics discussed in the textbook. How might the same ethical dilemma
be perceived differently? What actions might be taken differently when a
different ethical standard is applied? What results might be obtained differently?
Here are some sample sentences for your reference: From the perspective of end-
result ethics, it would be considered acceptable for that salesperson not to tell me
the truth about the product. From the perspective of duty ethics, I think …. If
reviewing this incident with social contract ethics, the situation may be
considered… However, from the perspective of personalistic ethics, I believe
that … End-result ethical standard best describes my dilemma. I think my boss
just wanted to earn money even when the quality of the tea was poor. … If
applying duty ethics in my situation, I should not give the customer extra boba in
the tea. … If applying social contract ethics in my situation, it would be
considered acceptable for me to give the customer extra boba in the tea. …
However, if examining this dilemma from the perspective of personalistic ethics,
I would tell the customer not to buy the tea from my shop because I knew the
quality of the tea in my shop was not good at all. The tea shop next to us was
actually selling a better tea.
From the perspective of end-result ethics, if I will get a million dollars, I'll yield my
seat for her right away. However, if I get nothing, I don’t need to yield it.
If applying duty ethics in my situation, I will yield my seat, because if I were her, I
hope I can have a seat when I was tired. However, if examining this dilemma
from the perspective of social contract ethics, I have to yield my seat due to the
established by the people through long social practice.
