Labour Studies

Research Assignment (25%)


This assignment requires you to research and reflect on an occupation or career that aligns with
your interests and career goals. It requires you to identify and research a specific sector, identify
the key labour challenges/ issues associated with it as framed through the media, and compose a
sociological reflection/ analysis. Please follow the following steps in completing your
assignment. If you are not sure about how to go about completing any of the steps below, please
get in touch with me by email.

1. Identification of occupational sector


(5 marks) (50-100 words)
Identify an occupation sector or career pathway that aligns with your interests and/or work goals.
Briefly describe what draws you to that sector/ career.

2. Identification of sector labour issues/ work challenges: Media framing


(25 marks) (300-350 words approx.)
This section requires you to draw upon a minimum of three media sources written and published
in 2023 (see note below regarding choosing media sources) that address labour issues/challenges
in the work area you have identified. Draw on your sources to complete the following:
o Drawing on your sources, identify between 1-2 labour issues impacting the area. Describe
the specific nature of the challenges/ issues you have identified as they are framed in your
media sources, and what the main sources of evidence are. In your discussion, consider
such questions as: How has it impacted workers? How has it impacted the occupational
sector? What is/ are the current and/or future consequences of the issue?
o Include citations and references for your sources in APA format. Any assignment that
does not include citations (a minimum of three) will automatically receive a zero for this
section.

3. Analysis/ Reflection (35 marks)


(400-500 words approx.)
This section requires you to draw on a minimum of three academic research articles (one of
which can be a policy document) that address what you consider to be the most important or
pressing issue impacting the sector in question. Draw on your sources to complete the following:
o Focusing on one labour challenge/ issue you have identified; what type of analysis do the
articles offer in terms of how it has impacted workers and/ or the occupational field?
Consider such questions as: What is the main argument of the sources you are drawing

upon? What are the differences between them? What are the main insights offered in the
articles in terms of key take-aways? How do they advance our understanding of the
issue?
o Aim to draw upon sources that are as current as possible (i.e., from the last 2-3 years, or
no more than 5 years ago). It is important that the information contained in your analysis/
reflection matches your sources. Any assignment that does not include citations (a
minimum of three) will automatically receive a zero for this section.

4. Conclusion
(5 marks) (50-100 words)
Conclude by briefly reflecting on what you consider to be the main insight(s) you have learned
about the labour issue and what you consider the future implications of it to be.

A note on finding sources:


The choice and quality of your source material will help determine the quality of your
assignment. If you are not sure about a source, please check it with me.
o Finding media sources: Your media sources should be from reputable outlets from 2023.
Examples include national or provincial newspapers or magazine periodicals. Do not use
social media accounts, blogs, or commercially-oriented websites etc.
o Finding academic sources: Your academic sources should be from the social sciences
(i.e., sociology and related areas). Only use a source if you have access to the full article
or text. You can also use publications or reports from Canadian research/ policy institutes
or organizations.
Using APA to cite and reference your sources:

o You are required to include citations (in the main body of your assignment) and
references (at the end of your assignment). All sources drawn upon must be cited and
referenced in APA format. A useful APA guide can be accessed through the library by
clicking here.

Formatting requirements/ style guide:

o APA title page: Include assignment title, student name, submission date,
identification of employment sector
o Word-count: Aim for a total of no more than 1000 words approx.
o Formatting: Word document, Times New Roman size 12 font, double-spaced
o Writing style: Clarity of expression and the extent to which you have written a well-
presented reflection are important. Pay particular attention to grammar, spelling, and
syntax.
Academic integrity:

Your reflection should be written as much as possible in your own words. Quotations from
sources should be kept to a minimum. Any reflections found to be either wholly or partly
plagiarized, or which are found to be written with the assistance of AI, will receive a grade of
zero and written notification (e.g., academic offense form). The policy can be accessed by

o Engagement with assignment section 2 (25 marks)
o Engagement with assignment section 3 (35 marks)

Total = 100 marks (25%)
