5) Find the value of k so that the lines whose equations are 5𝑥 + 3𝑘𝑦 = 6 and

7𝑥 + 9𝑦 = 11 are parallel.

6) Determine the values of a and b so that the linear system 8𝑎𝑥 – 𝑦 = 2 and
𝑥 – 0.25𝑦 = 𝑏 will have no solution.
7) What value(s) of 𝑝 and 𝑞 does the system 5𝑥 + 𝑦 = 𝑝 and 𝑞𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 24 have

infinitely many solutions?

8) Find the value of 𝑎 so that the system 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑦 = 5 and 2𝑥 – 2𝑦 = 10 will have

exactly one solution?

Part III. Problem Solving:

1) The perimeter of a triangle is 21 inches. If two sides are of equal length, and the third

side is 3 inches longer than one of the equal sides, find the length of the three sides.

2) A circle in a Cartesian plane can be written in the form x2 + y2 + Dx + Ey + F = 0. Find

D, E and F so that the circle passes through (-2, -1), (-1, -2) and (6, -1).

3) The sum of the digits of a three-digit number is 9, and the tens digit of the number is

twice the hundreds digit. If the digits are reversed in order, the new number is 99 more

than the original number. What is the original number?

4) The following is known about three numbers: Three times the first number plus the

second number plus twice the third number is 5. If 3 times the second number is

subtracted from the sum of the first number and 3 times the third number, the result

is 2. If the third number is subtracted from 2 times the first number and 3 times the

second number, the result is 1. Find the numbers.

5) How many centiliters of pure alcohol must be added to 35 centiliters of a 20% solution

to obtain a 30% solution?

6) A chemical storeroom has a 20% alcohol solution and a 50% alcohol solution. How

many centiliters must be taken from each to obtain 24 centiliters of a 30% solution?

7) A boat takes 3 hours to go 24 km upstream, and it can go 36km downstream in the

same time. Find the speed of the current and the speed of the boat in still water.

8) If a plane can travel 400 kph into the wind and 540 kph with the wind, find the speed

of the wind and speed of the plane in still air.

9) Niño can clean the whole house in 17 hours. One day, his friend Adrian helped him,

and it only took them 7 hours. Find the number of hours it would take Adrian to do

it alone.

10) Ren asked his brother Rey after painting the house in 5 days. Together, they

finished painting the entire house for 4 days. If Rey joined Ren painting the house a

day after Ren started working, they could have finished it in 7 days. How long will it

take each one to paint the house alone?
