READING
A Read the text. Answer the questions with full sentences.
The worst nuclear accident in history took place at Chernobyl, in Ukraine, in 1986, when Ukraine was still
part of the Soviet Union. The accident was the result of a number of terrible failures that still affect the
lives of hundreds of thousands of people to this day.
The first problem was that the main part of the power station was badly designed. This problem became
much worse because there wasn’t a proper safety system at the power station. In addition, the Soviet
Union had very little contact with the rest of the world at the time. This meant that the authorities there
couldn’t share information with other countries about their designs or how to make nuclear power
stations as safe as possible.
When the first explosion happened at Chernobyl, it sent tons of radioactive material into the
atmosphere. The second explosion, soon after the first one, started huge fires that sent more radioactive
material into the atmosphere. The Soviet authorities did not inform people in other countries about what
had happened and tried to stop the fire from spreading using their own systems. Three days after the
first accident, the fires were still burning, and experts in Sweden noticed increased levels of radiation
across Europe. By measuring wind speed and direction, the Swedish scientists identified that a nuclear
accident had taken place in Soviet territory. At first, the Soviet authorities said it wasn’t true. In the end
though, there was no way they could hide the evidence. The world found out that an enormous nuclear
accident had taken place.
Although the accident didn’t cause large numbers of deaths, it forced hundreds of thousands of people
to relocate from their homes. There was a lot of suffering. Fortunately, the result of the accident was that
the authorities in the Soviet Union started to work more closely with the rest of the world in order to
improve nuclear power station safety across the whole world.
2 What factors made the accident worse than it should have been?
3 How did the Soviet authorities deal with the accident at first?
4 Who discovered that there had been an accident in Soviet territory? Why did they discover it?
