Hi Charlie,
I hear you’re doing a project on space travel. 1 tell me what aspect of the history of space
exploration you’re interested in?
In my opinion, the most important people were the scientists and not the astronauts. If the scientists,
engineers, and computer programmers 2 developed the necessary technology, the astronauts
3 never have made the trip!
If I 4 had the chance, I would have loved to be a spacecraft engineer. I think space exploration
is really exciting!
5 if Sarah is back from her vacation yet? She’s a big space fan—maybe she could help you, too.

Space exploration
The arrival of the “space age” in the 1960s was indeed “a giant leap for mankind” as the astronaut Neil
Armstrong famously said when he landed on the moon. This is because it was, in many ways, the beginning
of the technological revolution. A revolution that still continues today.
After the end of the Second World War, there was a lot of competition between the two world super powers,
the US and the Soviet Union. Both worked very hard to be the first to control space. At one point, it looked as
if the Soviets would win the space race because Yuri Gagarin became the first man to travel into outer space.
But in the end, it was the US that put its flag on the surface of the moon during the Apollo 11 mission.
Since those early days, there has been much more international cooperation on space research and
exploration and the US, Russia, and many other countries work together on the International Space Station.
The research that scientists have done in space has resulted in many new developments on Earth, too. Space
exploration is directly connected to developments in computers, rocket technology, materials for home
insulation, solar energy systems, and microtechnology. All of these things have had a massive effect on the
speed of the technology that has been developed in recent years.
Some people still think that the money governments spend on space exploration could be used more
effectively here on Earth. Of course, we know that scientific space research and space travel are extremely
expensive, but the progress they have brought about can’t just be calculated in financial terms. Who knows
what other benefits will come from the discoveries being made on Mars in recent missions? Whatever they
are, they are sure to help our understanding of science and the universe.
1 The technological revolution ended with the success of the space race. True / False
2 The Soviet Union won the space race by sending a man into space first. True / False
3 People from many nations work together on space research now. True / False
