i) the weight of the rider and the sledge in (N). [1]

ii) the component of the combined weight which acts parallel to and down the slope.

9. A man of mass 60 kg walks up a track inclined at 30o to the horizontal as in figure

[R] above. If he walks 400 m along the track l, how much work does he do? [3]

10. A man loads a crate of mass 40 kg onto lorry (truck) by pushing it up a sloping
plank, at a steady speed as shown above in figure [W]. The plank is 2 m long and
its upper end is 0.6 m above the lower end.

i) What is the component of the weight of the crate parallel to the length of the
plank? [2]

ii) How much work does he do in pushing the crate up the length of the plank if

11. A man attempts to pull a box along the ground. He can pull a rope attached to the
box with a force of 100 N. A force of 70 N is needed to overcome the frictional
forces along the ground and just get the box moving. If he uses a short rope to
pull the box it makes an angle of 60o with the horizontal (i.e. the level ground)
figure [V] (i). However if he uses a longer rope it makes an angle of 20o with the
horizontal figure [V] (ii)..

i) Explain why he fails to move the box in the 1st scenario.[2]

ii) Explain why he succeeds in moving the box in 2nd scenario.[2]

And this Ch of the force parallel to the ground 94 N is greater than the 70 N
needed to move the box and so the man is able to move the box with the
longer rope with ease.

as shown in figure [U] above. The weight W of the car is 1000 N , the frictional
force acting down the plane is 100 N and the force on the car due to the engine is
800 N up the plane AB.

i) Calculate the component of the weight W down the plane AB.[2]
