Man and most animals need a constant supply of water to live. Farmers
water for their crops. Hydroelectric dams hold back needed water and provide
power for homes and industries. Trees and grass, and other plant life (1)_______
an important part in the natural circulation of water, (2)________ help conserve it.
Without plants most water would run as soon as it falls, taking away (3)_______
soil. Rapid runoff would cause frequent floods, and leave little water during dry
seasons. Nature has many ways of conserving and controlling water. But man
often upsets the water balance in his desire to grow more crops. He drains ponds,
swamps and wet land. He ploughs under the natural soil, cuts timber, and dredges
and straightens streams. These changes reduce natural storage of water and speed
runoff. Water can be held on the land by plating vegetation. Forests and grass
should be planted (4)________ there are no natural growths. Dams built across
rivers help hold back the water. Reservoirs behind the dams store water during wet
season to use in dry seasons. Dams help prevent floods by controlling the flow of
water.

One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage
of clean water. Having clean water is a basic human right. But acid rain, industrial
pollution and garbage have made many sources of water undrinkable. Lakes,
reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast pool of poison. Lake Baikal in
Russian is one of the largest lakes in the world. It contains a rich variety of
animals and plants, including 1300 rare species that do not exist anywhere else in
the world. But they are being destroyed by massive volumes of industrial effluent
which pour into the lake every day. Even where law existed, the government didn’t
have the power to enforce them. Most industry simply ignore the regulations. The
Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the world’s water surface. But it’s the dumping
ground for 50% of all marine pollution. Almost 16 countries regularly throw
industrial wastes a few miles offshore.

Promotion of learning and respect for teachers are among the traditional
values of the Vietnamese people. In the old days, it was commonly believed that a
teacher's position was higher than parents' and only lower than the king's. In many
communes and villages, rich people invited teachers to stay in their houses to teach
their own children and those from other families. To become a mandarin, a
candidate had to have excellent learning achievements and gained high marks in
competitive exams. The first such exam for civil administrators was conducted in
1075.
For nearly one thousand years, Vietnamese people learnt Chinese characters
and used them for writing, but pronounced them in a different, Vietnamese way.
Besides the use of Chinese characters, the Vietnamese people adapted such
characters to invent an ancient Vietnamese script for writing and expressions.

Most of us are very used to the sound we hear in everyday life. Loud music, the
television, people talking on their phone, the traffic and even pets barking in the
middle of the night. All of these have become a part of the urban culture and rarely
disturb us. However, when the sound of the television keeps you from sleeping all
night or the traffic starts to give you a headache, it stops becoming just noise and
start turning into noise pollution. For many of us, the concept of pollution is
limited to nature and resources, However, noise that tends to disrupt the nature
rhythm of life makes for one solid pollutant.
By definition, noise pollution takes place when there is either excessive
amount of noise or an unpleasant sound that causes temporary disruption in the
nature balance. This definition is usually applicable to sounds or noises that are
unnatural in either their volume or their production. Our environment is such that
is has become difficult to escapes noise. Even electrical appliances at home have a
constant hum or beeping sound. By and large, lack of urban planning increases
the exposure to unwanted sounds. This is why understanding noise pollution is
necessary to curb it in time.

The search for alternative sources of energy has led in various directions. Many
communities are burning garbage and other biological waste products to produce
electricity. Converting waste products to gases or oil is also an efficient way to
dispose of wastes.
Experimental work is being done to derive synthetic fuels from coal, oil shale and
coal tars. But to date, that process has proven expensive. Other experiments are
underway to harness power with giant windmills. Geothermal power, heat from the
earth, is also being tested.
Some experts expect utility companies to revive hydroelectric power derived
from streams and rivers. Fifty years ago, hydroelectric power provided one third of
the electricity used in the US, but today it supplies only 4 percent. The oceans are
another potential source of energy. Scientists are studying ways to convert the
energy of ocean currents, tides, and waves to electricity. Experiments are also
underway to make use of temperature differences in ocean water to produce
energy.
