OBLIQUE DRAWING
There are three types of pictorial drawing namely; axonometric drawing, oblique drawing and
perspective drawing. Among the three, oblique drawing is the simplest.
Oblique drawing is a pictorial drawing in which the front plane is parallel to the plane of projection
or picture plane. Oblique views are preferred when there are circular or irregular surfaces. These surfaces
are shown parallel to the picture plane.

THREE AXES OF OBLIQUE DRAWING

1. Horizontal axis
2. Vertical axis
3. Receding axis with an angle of 30⁰ or 45⁰

TWO TYPES OF OBLIQUE DRAWING

1. Cavalier Oblique – When the receding lines are true length (full scale)
2. Cabinet Oblique – When the receding lines are drawn to half size (half scale)

2
PRINCIPLES OF OBLIQUE DRAWING
1. Arcs and circles in objects should be placed in front to minimize distortion
2. Irregular shapes of the object should be placed in front to minimize distortion
3. The longest measurement should be placed in front

OBLIQUE SKETCHING ON CROSS-SECTION PAPER

Ordinary cross section paper or graphing paper is suitable for oblique drawing. The height and
width proportion can be easily controlled by simply counting the squares.
1. Sketch lightly the enclosing box construction. Sketch the receding lines at 45⁰ diagonally through
the squares.
2. To establish the depth, sketch the receding lines diagonally through half as many squares as the
actual depth would indicate.
3. Sketch all arcs and circles
4. Make all final lines heavy.

STEPS IN MAKING OBLIQUE DRAWING
Determine the side or surface to be made parallel to the picture plane. The object must be
positioned that the circle or arc is parallel to the plane of projection and can be readily drawn with the
compass in their true size and shape.
1. Draw the horizontal and vertical axes perpendicular to each other. Draw the receding axis at any
desired angle with horizontal axis. Usually, 30⁰ or 45⁰ angle is used
2. Upon these, construct an enclosing box, using the over-all dimensions of the object for cavalier
projection. For cabinet projection the dimension of the receding lines are reduced to 1/2 of the
actual size.
3. Block out the various shapes in detail.
4. Heavy-in all final lines.
