puzzle, what do you think is our lesson for Ma’am, I think our topic for
today? today is about how to
preserve foods.
You are right, our topic for today is all about
preserving food which is also called as food
preservation.
Let’s define first what is food preservation.

Food preservation is the process of

changing raw ingredients into food by
means of physical or chemical ways. It is
the process of treating and handling food to
stop, slow down spoilage to prevent food
borne illness and extend its shelf-life.

What does spoilage mean?

It is the process in which food stop being
good enough to eat.

There are four ways of food preservation;

drying, salting, freezing and processing.

1. Drying- Food drying is one of the

oldest methods of preserving food.
Drying food is simple, safe and easy
to learn.
Example: Dried fish, fruits and
vegetables.

2. Freezing- it delays spoilage and

keeps foods safe by preventing
microorganisms from growing and
by slowing down the enzyme activity
that causes food to spoil.
Example: Frozen foods, meat and
fish.

3. Salting- Salting preserves food by

drawing water out of the food,
preventing bacteria growing and
spoiling the food.
Example: Bagoong and salted egg.
